Development and characterisation of novel microsatellite loci for the baldchin groper (Choerodon rubescens) and cross-amplification in seven other labrid species
We describe the development and characterisation of novel microsatellite loci for the baldchin groper, Choerodon rubescens. The purpose was to identify loci that can be used to resolve uncertainties about the population (stock) structure of this fish species, which is endemic to a narrow region of the west coast of Australia and showing evidence of overfishing in some locations. Of 22 loci characterised, 12 appear to be ideally suited for population-level analyses. Utilising data obtained from four sampling locations across the distribution of C. rubescens, the total number of alleles observed at each of the 12 loci ranged from 2 to 24, while the overall values of expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.19 to 0.89. Cross-amplification of the 12 loci in seven other labrid species was often successful, especially in congeners
Tissue Cytokine Responses in Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis
To elucidate the local tissue cytokine response of dogs infected with Leishmania chagasi, cytokine mRNA levels were measured in bone marrow aspirates from 27 naturally infected dogs from Brazil and were compared with those from 5 uninfected control animals. Interferon-γ mRNA accumulation was enhanced in infected dogs and was positively correlated with humoral (IgG1) but not with lymphoproliferative responses to Leishmania antigen in infected dogs. Increased accumulation of mRNA for interleukin (IL)4, IL-10, and IL-18 was not observed in infected dogs, and mRNA for these cytokines did not correlate with antibody or proliferative responses. However, infected dogs with detectable IL-4 mRNA had significantly more severe symptoms. IL-13 mRNA was not detectable in either control or infected dogs. These data suggest that clinical symptoms are not due to a deficiency in interferon-γ production. However, in contrast to its role in human visceral leishmaniasis, IL-10 may not play a key immunosuppressive role in dogs
Effects of incubation time and filtration method on Kd of indigenous selenium and iodine in temperate soils
In this study, the effects of incubation time and the method of soil solution extraction and filtration on the empirical distribution coefficient (Kd) obtained by de-sorbing indigenous selenium (Se) and iodine (I) from arable and woodland soils under temperate conditions were investigated.
Incubation time had a significant soil- and element- dependent effect on the Kd values, which tended to decrease with the incubation time. Generally, a four-week period was sufficient for the desorption Kd value to stabilise. Concurrent solubilisation of soil organic matter (OM) and release of organically-bound Se and I was probably responsible for the observed decrease in Kd with time. This contrasts with the conventional view of OM as a sink for Se and I in soils. Selenium and I Kd values were not significantly affected by the method of soil solution extraction and filtration.
The results suggest that incubation time is a key criterion when selecting Se and I Kd values from the literature for risk assessments. Values derived from desorption of indigenous soil Se and I might be most appropriate for long-term assessments since they reflect the quasi-equilibrium state of their partitioning in soils

A 5000-year record of relative sea-level change in New Jersey, USA
Stratigraphic data from salt marshes provide accurate reconstructions of Holocene relative sea level (RSL) change and necessary constraints to models of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), which is the dominant cause of late Holocene RSL rise along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast. Here, we produce a new mid- to late-Holocene RSL record from a salt marsh bordering Great Bay in southern New Jersey using basal peats. We use a multi-proxy approach (foraminifera and geochemistry) to identify the indicative meaning of the basal peats and produce sea-level index points (SLIPs) that include a vertical uncertainty for tidal range change and sediment compaction and a temporal uncertainty based on high precision Accelerator Mass Spectrometry radiocarbon dating of salt-marsh plant macrofossils. The 14 basal SLIPs range from 1211 ± 56 years BP to 4414 ± 112 years BP, which we combine with published RSL data from southern New Jersey and use with a spatiotemporal statistical model to show that RSL rose 8.6 m at an average rate of 1.7 ± 0.1 mm/yr (1σ) from 5000 years BP to present. We compare the RSL changes with an ensemble of 1D (laterally homogenous) and site-specific 3D (laterally heterogeneous) GIA models, which tend to overestimate the magnitude of RSL rise over the last 5000 years. The continued discrepancy between RSL data and GIA models highlights the importance of using a wide array of ice model and viscosity model parameters to more precisely fit site-specific RSL data along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast

Decoherence of electron spin qubits in Si-based quantum computers
Direct phonon spin-lattice relaxation of an electron qubit bound by a donor
impurity or quantum dot in SiGe heterostructures is investigated. The aim is to
evaluate the importance of decoherence from this mechanism in several important
solid-state quantum computer designs operating at low temperatures. We
calculate the relaxation rate as a function of [100] uniaxial strain,
temperature, magnetic field, and silicon/germanium content for Si:P bound
electrons. The quantum dot potential is much smoother, leading to smaller
splittings of the valley degeneracies. We have estimated these splittings in
order to obtain upper bounds for the relaxation rate. In general, we find that
the relaxation rate is strongly decreased by uniaxial compressive strain in a
SiGe-Si-SiGe quantum well, making this strain an important positive design
feature. Ge in high concentrations (particularly over 85%) increases the rate,
making Si-rich materials preferable. We conclude that SiGe bound electron
qubits must meet certain conditions to minimize decoherence but that
spin-phonon relaxation does not rule out the solid-state implementation of

Flux-noise spectra around the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for two-dimensional superconductors
The flux-noise spectra around the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition are obtained
from simulations of the two-dimensional resistively shunted junction model. In
particular the dependence on the distance between the pick-up coil and the
sample is investigated. The typical experimental situation corresponds to the
large- limit and a simple relation valid in this limit between the complex
impedance and the noise spectra is clarified. Features, which distinguish
between the large- and small- limit, are identified and the possibility of
