Resonance induced by repulsive interactions in a model of globally-coupled bistable systems
We show the existence of a competition-induced resonance effect for a generic
globally coupled bistable system. In particular, we demonstrate that the
response of the macroscopic variable to an external signal is optimal for a
particular proportion of repulsive links. Furthermore, we show that a resonance
also occurs for other system parameters, like the coupling strength and the
number of elements. We relate this resonance to the appearance of a multistable
region, and we predict the location of the resonance peaks, by a simple
spectral analysis of the Laplacian matrix
Learning algebraic structures with the help of Borel equivalence relations
We study algorithmic learning of algebraic structures. In our framework, a learner receives larger and larger pieces of an arbitrary copy of a computable structure and, at each stage, is required to output a conjecture about the isomorphism type of such a structure. The learning is successful if the conjectures eventually stabilize to a correct guess. We prove that a family of structures is learnable if and only if its learning domain is continuously reducible to the relation E0 of eventual agreement on reals. This motivates a novel research program, that is, using descriptive set theoretic tools to calibrate the (learning) complexity of nonlearnable families. Here, we focus on the learning power of well-known benchmark Borel equivalence relations (i.e., E1, E2, E3, Z0, and Eset)
Mechanical detection of carbon nanotube resonator vibrations
Bending-mode vibrations of carbon nanotube resonator devices were
mechanically detected in air at atmospheric pressure by means of a novel
scanning force microscopy method. The fundamental and higher order bending
eigenmodes were imaged at up to 3.1GHz with sub-nanometer resolution in
vibration amplitude. The resonance frequency and the eigenmode shape of
multi-wall nanotubes are consistent with the elastic beam theory for a doubly
clamped beam. For single-wall nanotubes, however, resonance frequencies are
significantly shifted, which is attributed to fabrication generating, for
example, slack. The effect of slack is studied by pulling down the tube with
the tip, which drastically reduces the resonance frequency
Spatiotemporal Chaos, Localized Structures and Synchronization in the Vector Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation
We study the spatiotemporal dynamics, in one and two spatial dimensions, of
two complex fields which are the two components of a vector field satisfying a
vector form of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We find synchronization
and generalized synchronization of the spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics. The
two kinds of synchronization can coexist simultaneously in different regions of
the space, and they are mediated by localized structures. A quantitative
characterization of the degree of synchronization is given in terms of mutual

Convection-induced nonlinear-symmetry-breaking in wave mixing
We show that the combined action of diffraction and convection (walk-off) in
wave mixing processes leads to a nonlinear-symmetry-breaking in the generated
traveling waves. The dynamics near to threshold is reduced to a Ginzburg-Landau
model, showing an original dependence of the nonlinear self-coupling term on
the convection. Analytical expressions of the intensity and the velocity of
traveling waves emphasize the utmost importance of convection in this
phenomenon. These predictions are in excellent agreement with the numerical
solutions of the full dynamical model.Comment: 5 page
Nonlinear oscillator with parametric colored noise: some analytical results
The asymptotic behavior of a nonlinear oscillator subject to a multiplicative
Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise is investigated. When the dynamics is expressed in
terms of energy-angle coordinates, it is observed that the angle is a fast
variable as compared to the energy. Thus, an effective stochastic dynamics for
the energy can be derived if the angular variable is averaged out. However, the
standard elimination procedure, performed earlier for a Gaussian white noise,
fails when the noise is colored because of correlations between the noise and
the fast angular variable. We develop here a specific averaging scheme that
retains these correlations. This allows us to calculate the probability
distribution function (P.D.F.) of the system and to derive the behavior of
physical observables in the long time limit
Sweet cherry production in South Patagonia
In South Patagonia, the total sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) area has increased from 176 ha in 1997 to 507 ha in 2004, of which 232 ha are located in Los Antiguos (46°19¿ SL; 220 m elevation), 158 ha in the Lower Valley of Chubut River (LVCHR) (43°16¿ SL; 30 m elevation), 52 ha in Sarmiento (45°35¿ SL; 270 m elevation), 35 ha in Esquel (42°55¿ SL; 570 m elevation) and 30 ha in Comodoro Rivadavia (45°52¿ SL; 50 m elevation). The most common varieties are `Lapins¿, `Bing¿, `Newstar¿, `Sweetheart¿, `Stella¿, `Sunburst¿ and `Van¿ grafted on `Mahaleb¿, `Pontaleb¿, `SL 64¿, `Colt¿ or `Mazzard¿ rootstocks. Trees generally are drip-irrigated and planted at high densities, using training systems such as Tatura, central leader and modified vase (2700, 1100 and 1000 trees ha-1, respectively). Growers in Los Antiguos are more traditional, planting mainly as vase (400 to 1000 trees ha-1) or freestanding trees (280 trees ha-1) and irrigating by gravity (74% of the area). Only 4.4% of the area of Los Antiguos is frost protected, as growers rely strongly on the moderating effect of Lake Buenos Aires. Frost control systems are absent in Comodoro Rivadavia because the established orchards are located next to the sea, in an area with low risk of frost. The frost-protected area is 49% in Sarmiento, 35% in Esquel and 57% in LVCHR. Fruit are harvested from November (LVCHR) to the end of January (Los Antiguos and Esquel), and the harvest-only labour demand during the 2004/2005 season was 100,000 h. In that season, seven packinghouses exported 390 t (45% of the total production) to Europe. Most orchards have not yet reached their mature stage and new ones are being established. Therefore, fruit volumes will continue to increase and shortages of labour and packing facilities may become a constraint
Dynamics of localized structures in vector waves
Dynamical properties of topological defects in a twodimensional complex
vector field are considered. These objects naturally arise in the study of
polarized transverse light waves. Dynamics is modeled by a Vector Complex
Ginzburg-Landau Equation with parameter values appropriate for linearly
polarized laser emission. Creation and annihilation processes, and
selforganization of defects in lattice structures, are described. We find
"glassy" configurations dominated by vectorial defects and a melting process
