On the multiplicity of ALMA Compact Array counterparts of far-infrared bright quasars
We present ALMA Atacama Compact Array (ACA) 870 micron continuum maps of 28
infrared-bright SDSS quasars with Herschel/SPIRE detections at redshifts 2-4,
the largest such sample ever observed with ALMA. The ACA detections are centred
on the SDSS coordinates to within 1 arcsec for about 80 per cent of the sample.
Larger offsets indicate that the far-infrared (FIR) emission detected by
Herschel might come from a companion source. The majority of the objects (about
70 per cent) have unique ACA counterparts within the SPIRE beam down to 3-4
arcsec resolution. Only 30 per cent of the sample shows clear evidence for
multiple sources with secondary counterparts contributing to the total 870
micron flux within the SPIRE beam to at least 25 per cent. We discuss the
limitations of the data based on simulated pairs of point-like sources at the
resolution of the ACA and present an extensive comparison of our findings with
recent works on the multiplicities of sub-millimetre galaxies. We conclude
that, despite the coarse resolution of the ACA, our data support the idea that,
for a large fraction of FIR-bright quasars, the sub-mm emission comes from
single sources. Our results suggest that, on average, optically bright quasars
with strong FIR emission are not triggered by early-stage mergers but are,
instead, together with their associated star formation rates, the outcome of
either late-stage mergers or secular processes.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure
Effectiveness of a temperature control system in home induction hobs to reduce acrylamide formation during pan frying
Three trials were conducted to determine the influence of the use of temperature control systems on physico-chemical characteristics and acrylamide formation in the domestic preparation of potatoes. French fries were pre-treated by soaking in water or acidified water, and then they were cooked using a range of home-cooking procedures. Soaking raw potatoes in acidified water (pH=3.17) before frying at a controlled temperature (180 °C) was the most efficient pretreatment for reducing acrylamide formation (76%). For the same temperature, roasted frozen par-fried potatoes contained less fat and acrylamide than similar pan-fried potatoes. Potatoes butter fried at 140 °C had an acrylamide concentration similar to that of potatoes fried in oil at 180 °C, but this value was reduced by 71% when the frying was carried out using a temperature control system. Integrating clinicians, knowledge and data: expert-based cooperative analysis in healthcare decision support
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Decision support in health systems is a highly difficult task, due to the inherent complexity of the process and structures involved.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>This paper introduces a new hybrid methodology <it>Expert-based Cooperative Analysis </it>(EbCA), which incorporates explicit prior expert knowledge in data analysis methods, and elicits implicit or tacit expert knowledge (IK) to improve decision support in healthcare systems. EbCA has been applied to two different case studies, showing its usability and versatility: 1) Bench-marking of small mental health areas based on technical efficiency estimated by <it>EbCA-Data Envelopment Analysis (EbCA-DEA)</it>, and 2) Case-mix of schizophrenia based on functional dependency using <it>Clustering Based on Rules (ClBR)</it>. In both cases comparisons towards classical procedures using qualitative explicit prior knowledge were made. Bayesian predictive validity measures were used for comparison with expert panels results. Overall agreement was tested by Intraclass Correlation Coefficient in case "1" and kappa in both cases.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>EbCA is a new methodology composed by 6 steps:. 1) Data collection and data preparation; 2) acquisition of "Prior Expert Knowledge" (PEK) and design of the "Prior Knowledge Base" (PKB); 3) PKB-guided analysis; 4) support-interpretation tools to evaluate results and detect inconsistencies (here <it>Implicit Knowledg </it>-IK- might be elicited); 5) incorporation of elicited IK in PKB and repeat till a satisfactory solution; 6) post-processing results for decision support. EbCA has been useful for incorporating PEK in two different analysis methods (DEA and Clustering), applied respectively to assess technical efficiency of small mental health areas and for case-mix of schizophrenia based on functional dependency. Differences in results obtained with classical approaches were mainly related to the IK which could be elicited by using EbCA and had major implications for the decision making in both cases.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This paper presents EbCA and shows the convenience of completing classical data analysis with PEK as a mean to extract relevant knowledge in complex health domains. One of the major benefits of EbCA is iterative elicitation of IK.. Both explicit and tacit or implicit expert knowledge are critical to guide the scientific analysis of very complex decisional problems as those found in health system research.</p
A Global Review on Innovative, Sustainable, and Effective Materials Composing Growing Media for Forest Seedling Production
Purpose of Review: The demand for forest tree seedlings is increasing globally, and Sphagnum peat moss is widely used as a component of growing media for container plant production. However, peat extraction is environmentally unsustainable. The forest nursery sector needs to switch to more sustainable alternatives to peat. This review aims to identify potential substitutes for peat by reviewing the worldwide literature on alternative materials for growing media in forest nurseries. Recent Findings: Most studies on alternative growing media focused on single plant species growing under local conditions, thereby limiting generalizations about the effectiveness of alternative materials for plant production. To our knowledge, no systematic reviews of scientific literature on the effectiveness of new, alternative-to-peat materials for enhancing plant growth and the associated growing media characteristics for the forest nursery sector are currently available. Summary: Most of the analyzed case studies focused on angiosperms (73.1%), with the majority of studies coming from tropical seasonal forests/savannas (36.5%), followed by woodlands/shrublands (31.6%), and temperate forests (15.0%) biomes. Compost was the most studied material (19.5%), followed by bark, other organic materials, and manure (9.8, 9.7, and 8.0%, respectively). Green and municipal wastes were the principal sources of compost (> 60%), while agriculture and green wastes were the first sources of other materials (> 90%). Tested materials were dependent on the geographic region. Thus, manure was the most tested material in Africa and South America, tree bark in North America, and compost in Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Alternative materials effectively provided optimal physicochemical characteristics of growing media and enhanced seedling nursery growth when compared with peat-based growing media in more than 60% of the case studies. This review helps to identify research gaps and, most importantly, provides the basis for the future application of alternative growing media materials in forest nursery management worldwide
Fabrication of a planar micro Penning trap and numerical investigations of versatile ion positioning protocols
We describe a versatile planar Penning trap structure, which allows to
dynamically modify the trapping conguration almost arbitrarily. The trap
consists of 37 hexagonal electrodes, each with a circumcirle-diameter of 300 m,
fabricated in a gold-on-sapphire lithographic technique. Every hexagon can be
addressed individually, thus shaping the electric potential. The fabrication of
such a device with clean room methods is demonstrated. We illustrate the
variability of the device by a detailed numerical simulation of a lateral and a
vertical transport and we simulate trapping in racetrack and articial crystal
congurations. The trap may be used for ions or electrons, as a versatile

Microstructural and strength study of MIG welded joints of AW7020 aluminium alloy, as a function of joint geometry
[EN] Medium strength AW7XXX aluminium alloys are widely used as welded structures and in transportation. The applications of these alloys are limited by the behaviour of the welded joints. There is no agreement on the joint geometry that must be used on 5 mm welds. The microhardness evolution is one of the most important strength indicators. Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) : refining the local galaxy merger rate using morphological information

PN acknowledges the support of the Royal Society through the award of a University Research Fellowship and the European Research Council, through receipt of a Starting Grant (DEGAS-259586).We use the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey to measure the local Universe mass-dependent merger fraction and merger rate using galaxy pairs and the CAS (concentration, asymmetry, and smoothness) structural method, which identifies highly asymmetric merger candidate galaxies. Our goals are to determine which types of mergers produce highly asymmetrical galaxies and to provide a new measurement of the local galaxy major merger rate. We examine galaxy pairs at stellar mass limits down to M* = 108âMâ with mass ratios of 4:1) the lower mass companion becomes highly asymmetric, whereas the larger galaxy is much less affected. The fraction of highly asymmetric paired galaxies which have a major merger companion is highest for the most massive galaxies and drops progressively with decreasing mass. We calculate that the mass-dependent major merger fraction is fairly constant at âź1.3â2 perâcent within 109.5 < M* < 1011.5âMâ, and increases to âź4 perâcent at lower masses. When the observability time-scales are taken into consideration, the major merger rate is found to approximately triple over the mass range we consider. Developing a tool for mapping adult mental health care provision in Europe: the REMAST research protocol and its contribution to better integrated care
Introduction: Mental health care is a critical area to better understand integrated care and to pilot the different components of the integrated care model. However, there is an urgent need for better tools to compare and understand the context of integrated mental health care in Europe.
Method: The REMAST tool (REFINEMENT MApping Services Tool) combines a series of standardised health service research instruments and geographical information systems (GIS) to develop local atlases of mental health care from the perspective of horizontal and vertical integrated care. It contains five main sections: (a) Population Data; (b) the Verona Socio-economic Status (SES) Index; (c) the Mental Health System Checklist; (d) the Mental Health Services Inventory using the DESDE-LTC instrument; and (e) Geographical Data.
Expected results: The REMAST tool facilitates context analysis in mental health by providing the comparative rates of mental health service provision according to the availability of main types of care; care placement capacity; workforce capacity; and geographical accessibility to services in the local areas in eight study areas in Austria, England, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Romania and Spain.
Discussion: The outcomes of this project will facilitate cooperative work and knowledge transfer on mental health care to the different agencies involved in mental health planning and provision. This project would improve the information to users and society on the available resources for mental health care and system thinking at the local level by the different stakeholders. The techniques used in this project and the knowledge generated could eventually be transferred to the mapping of other fields of integrated care
