Evidence for glutamate-mediated excitotoxic mechanisms during photoreceptor degeneration in the rd1 mouse retina
PURPOSE: Kinetic studies of photoreceptor cell death in the retinal degeneration (rd1) mouse model suggest that photoreceptor degeneration could result from cumulative damage. Since alterations in glutamate metabolism have been described in different models of retinitis pigmentosa, we investigated in the present work whether changes in glutamate turnover occur in the degenerating rd1 retina and whether glutamate-mediated excitotoxic mechanisms may contribute to rod photoreceptor death in this model. METHODS: Free amino acid levels were quantified in rd1 and wild-type retinas using an amino acid analyzer selecting times corresponding to early, intermediate, and terminal phases of rod photoreceptor degeneration. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to compare the mRNA expression levels of the glial L-glutamate/L-aspartate transporter GLAST, glutamine synthetase (GS), and vimentin, a marker for retinal glia, between rd1 and wild-type mouse retinas. 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (CNQX), an antagonist of both AMPA and kainate subtypes of ionotropic glutamate receptors, was then daily administered from postnatal day 3 (PN3) to PN21 to rd1 mice while control rd1 mice received only physiological saline solution (7 per treatment). Selective Reflection Spectroscopy on the UV Third Resonance Line of Cs : Simultaneous Probing of a van der Waals Atom-Surface Interaction Sensitive to Far IR Couplings and of Interatomic Collisions
We report on the analysis of FM selective reflection experiments on the
6S1/2->8P3/2 transition of Cs at 388 nm, and on the measurement of the surface
van der Waals interaction exerted by a sapphire interface on Cs(8P3/2). Various
improvements in the systematic fitting of the experiments have permitted to
supersede the major difficulty of a severe overlap of the hyperfine components,
originating on the one hand in a relatively small natural structure, and on the
other hand on a large pressure broadening imposed by the high atomic density
needed for the observation of selective reflection on a weak transition. The
strength of the van der Waals surface interaction is evaluated to be 7310
kHz.m3. An evaluation of the pressure shift of the transition is also
provided as a by-product of the measurement. We finally discuss the
significance of an apparent disagreement between the experimental measurement
of the surface interaction, and the theoretical value calculated for an
electromagnetic vacuum at a null temperature. The possible influence of the
thermal excitation of the surface is evoked, because, the dominant
contributions to the vW interaction for Cs(8P3/2) lie in the far infrared

Combined full shape analysis of BOSS galaxies and eBOSS quasars using an iterative emulator
Standard full-shape clustering analyses in Fourier space rely on a fixed
power spectrum template, defined at the fiducial cosmology used to convert
redshifts into distances, and compress the cosmological information into the
Alcock-Paczynski parameters and the linear growth rate of structure. In this
paper, we propose an analysis method that operates directly in the cosmology
parameter space and varies the power spectrum template accordingly at each
tested point. Predictions for the power spectrum multipoles from the TNS model
are computed at different cosmologies in the framework of .
Applied to the final eBOSS QSO and LRG samples together with the low-z DR12
BOSS galaxy sample, our analysis results in a set of constraints on the
cosmological parameters , , ,
and . To reduce the number of computed models, we construct an iterative
process to sample the likelihood surface, where each iteration consists of a
Gaussian process regression. This method is validated with mocks from N-body
simulations. From the combined analysis of the (e)BOSS data, we obtain the
following constraints: and without any external prior. The eBOSS quasar sample

Organic waste as a sustainable feedstock for platform chemicals
Biorefineries have been established since the 1980s for biofuel production, and there has been a switch lately from first to second generation feedstocks in order to avoid the food versus fuel dilemma. To a lesser extent, many opportunities have been investigated for producing chemicals from biomass using by-products of the present biorefineries, simple waste streams. Current facilities apply intensive pre-treatments to deal with single substrate types such as carbohydrates. However, most organic streams such as municipal solid waste or algal blooms present a high complexity and variable mixture of molecules, which makes specific compound production and separation difficult. Here we focus on flexible anaerobic fermentation and hydrothermal processes that can treat complex biomass as a whole to obtain a range of products within an integrated biorefinery concept
The Completed SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Measurement of the BAO and growth rate of structure of the luminous red galaxy sample from the anisotropic power spectrum between redshifts 0.6 and 1.0
We analyse the clustering of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 16 luminous red galaxy sample (DR16 eBOSS LRG) in combination with the high redshift tail of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 12 (DR12 BOSS CMASS).We measure the redshift space distortions (RSD) and also extract the longitudinal and transverse baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale from the anisotropic power spectrum signal inferred from 377 458 galaxies between redshifts 0.6 and 1.0, with the effective redshift of zeff = 0.698 and effective comoving volume of 2.72 Gpc3. After applying reconstruction, we measure the BAO scale and infer DH(zeff)/rdrag = 19.30 ± 0.56 and DM(zeff)/rdrag = 17.86 ± 0.37. When we perform an RSD analysis on the pre-reconstructed catalogue on the monopole, quadrupole, and hexadecapole we find, DH(zeff)/rdrag = 20.18 ± 0.78, DM(zeff)/rdrag = 17.49 ± 0.52 and fÏ8(zeff) = 0.454 ± 0.046. We combine both sets of results along with the measurements in configuration space and report the following consensus values: DH(zeff)/rdrag = 19.77 ± 0.47, DM(zeff)/rdrag = 17.65 ± 0.30 and fÏ8(zeff) = 0.473 ± 0.044, which are in full agreement with the standard CDM and GR predictions. These results represent the most precise measurements within the redshift range 0.6 †z †1.0 and are the culmination of more than 8 yr of SDSS observations
The relative effects of upwelling and river flow on the phytoplankton diversity patterns in the ria of A Coruña (NW Spain)
Phytoplankton species assemblages in estuaries are connected to those in rivers and marine environments by local hydrodynamics leading to a continuous flow of taxa. This study revealed differential effects of upwelling and river flow on phytoplankton communities observed in 2011 along a salinity gradient from a river reservoir connected to the sea through a ria-marine bay system in A Coruña (NW Spain, 43° 16-21â N, 8° 16-22â W). With 130 phytoplankton taxa identified, the assemblages were dominated in general by diatoms, particularly abundant in the bay and in the estuary, but also by chlorophycea and cyanobacteria in the reservoir. Considering the entire seasonal cycle, the local assemblages were mainly characterized by changes in cryptophytes and diatoms, small dinoflagellates and some freshwater chlorophycea. Salinity, nitrate, and organic matter variables, were the main environmental factors related to the changes in the phytoplankton communities through the system, while phosphate and nitrite were also important for local communities in the estuary and the bay, respectively. The corresponding local phytoplankton assemblages showed moderate levels of connectivity. The estuarine community shared a variable number of taxa with the adjacent zones, depending on the relative strength of upwelling (major influence from the bay) and river flow (major influence of the reservoir) but had on average 35% of unique taxa.
