    Masses and magnetic moments of ground-state baryons in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory

    We report on some recent developments in our understanding of the light-quark mass dependence and the SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking corrections to the magnetic moments of the ground-state baryons in a covariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory, the so-called EOMS formulation.     Leading SU(3)-breaking corrections to the baryon magnetic moments in Chiral Perturbation Theory

    We calculate the baryon magnetic moments using covariant Chiral Perturbation Theory (χ\chiPT) within the Extended-on-mass-shell (EOMS) renormalization scheme. By fitting the two available low-energy constants (LECs), we improve the Coleman-Glashow description of the data when we include the leading SU(3) breaking effects coming from the lowest-order loops. This success is in dramatic contrast with previous attempts at the same order using Heavy Baryon (HB) χ\chiPT and covariant Infrared (IR) χ\chiPT.     Nucleon-to-Delta axial transition form factors in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory

    We report a theoretical study of the axial Nucleon to Delta(1232) (N→ΔN\to\Delta) transition form factors up to one-loop order in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory. We adopt a formalism in which the Δ\Delta couplings obey the spin-3/2 gauge symmetry and, therefore, decouple the unphysical spin-1/2 fields.     Abstract — A complete piloting control subsystem for a highly autonomous long range rover will be defined in order to identify the key control functions needed to achieve contin-uous driving. This capability can maximize range and num-ber of interesting scientific sites visited during the limited life time of a planetary rover. To achieve continuous driving, a complete set of techniques have been employed: fuzzy based control, real-time artificial intelligence reasoning, fast and ro-bust rover position estimation based on odometry and angu-lar rate sensing, efficient stereo vision elevation maps based on grids, and fast reaction and planning for obstacle detec-tion and obstacle avoidance based on a simple IF-THEN ex-pert system with fuzzy reasoning.     Microdroplets have been used as reactors for the fabrication of agarose beads with high uniformity in shape and size, and densely loaded with silver ions, which were subsequently reduced into nanoparticles using hydrazine. The resulting nanocomposite beads not only display a high plasmonic activity, but can also trap/concentrate analytes, which can be identified by means of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy.     Discovery of a wide companion near the deuterium burning mass limit in the Upper Scorpius association

    We present the discovery of a companion near the deuterium burning mass limit located at a very wide distance, at an angular separation of 4.6+/-0.1 arcsec (projected distance of ~ 670 AU) from UScoCTIO108, a brown dwarf of the very young Upper Scorpius association. Optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy confirm the cool nature of both objects, with spectral types of M7 and M9.5, respectively, and that they are bona fide members of the association, showing low gravity and features of youth. Their masses, estimated from the comparison of their bolometric luminosities and theoretical models for the age range of the association, are 60+/-20 and 14^{+2}_{-8} MJup, respectively. The existence of this object around a brown dwarf at this wide orbit suggests that the companion is unlikely to have formed in a disk based on current planet formation models. Because this system is rather weakly bound, they did not probably form through dynamical ejection of stellar embryos.Comment: 10 pages, including 4 figures and 2 table

    Multi-Messenger Theories of Gauge-Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking

    We study gauge-mediated theories containing several messengers with the most general SU(5)-invariant mass and supersymmetry-breaking parameters. We show that these theories are predictive, containing only two relevant parameters more than the minimal gauge-mediated model. Hypercharge D-terms can contribute significantly to the right-handed charged sleptons and bring them closer in mass to the left-handed sleptons. The messenger masses must be invariant under either SU(5) or a ``messenger parity" to avoid spontaneous breaking of charge conservation.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure
