    A Comparison of Lethal and Non-Lethal Management Approaches to Reduce Damage Associated with Urban Crow Roosts in New York and Virginia

    Crow populations have steadily increased in many parts of the country since 1966. Although large winter congregations of crows in urban environments are not a new phenomenon, the number of complaints regarding damage associated with these large (2,000-20,000 individuals) roosts appears to be increasing. In an effort to assist the public in reducing impacts of urban crow roosts, USDA, APHIS, Wildlife Services in Virginia and New York implemented large-scale roost dispersal programs in the winter of 2001-2002. The goal of the programs were to manage local crow populations to minimize associated noise, accumulations of crow fecal droppings on and around residences, strong ammonia odors from fecal droppings, property damage, clean-up costs and threats to human health and safety. Multiple meetings involving the public and key stakeholders were convened where a variety of options and consequences of each option were discussed. Options considered were no action, habitat alteration, cultural methods, roost dispersal, and roost depopulation. Wildlife Services in each state took different approaches to managing crow roosting sites based on state regulations, available tools, scope of the problem, consequences of each management action, effectiveness of methods, and public input. In Virginia, a lethal control program was initiated targeting one roost site (2,000-6 ,000 crows/roost) using the avicide DRC-1339. The goals were to remove a significant percentage of the local crow population and disperse the remaining crows. This project resulted in an estimated 73% reduction in crow numbers at the primary roost site and altered roost dynamics at another roost. The cooperators satisfaction level was an immediate 75% reduction in damage based on a polling of affected property owners. This satisfaction level was based on a reduction in fecal droppings, maintenance costs to clean up fecal droppings, noise, and abundance of crows. In upstate New York, two roost sites (16,000-20,000 crows/roost) were successfully dispersed using a non-lethal hazing program (pyrotechnics, recorded crow distress calls and hand-held lasers). In New York, no avicides were registered at the time of this project and the Cities of Troy and Albany requested that WS try a non-lethal program prior to implementing a lethal control program. The number of crows in the primary roost in the cities of Albany and Troy were reduced by more than 95% over the course of an eight-day program. Significant reduction in crow numbers and damage remained more than eight weeks later. In this paper we will provide a comparison of crow management projects in Virginia and New York and discuss implications of different approaches for managing urban crows

    Chemoenzymatic Probes for Detecting and Imaging Fucose-Ξ±(1-2)-galactose Glycan Biomarkers

    The disaccharide motif fucose-Ξ±(1-2)-galactose (FucΞ±(1-2)Gal) is involved in many important physiological processes, such as learning and memory, inflammation, asthma, and tumorigenesis. However, the size and structural complexity of FucΞ±(1-2)Gal-containing glycans have posed a significant challenge to their detection. We report a new chemoenzymatic strategy for the rapid, sensitive detection of FucΞ±(1-2)Gal glycans. We demonstrate that the approach is highly selective for the FucΞ±(1-2)Gal motif, detects a variety of complex glycans and glycoproteins, and can be used to profile the relative abundance of the motif on live cells, discriminating malignant from normal cells. This approach represents a new potential strategy for biomarker detection and expands the technologies available for understanding the roles of this important class of carbohydrates in physiology and disease

    Echocardiography findings in COVID-19 patients admitted to intensive care units: a multi-national observational study (the ECHO-COVID study)

    Purpose: Severely ill patients affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) develop circulatory failure. We aimed to report patterns of left and right ventricular dysfunction in the first echocardiography following admission to intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: Retrospective, descriptive study that collected echocardiographic and clinical information from severely ill COVID-19 patients admitted to 14 ICUs in 8 countries. Patients admitted to ICU who received at least one echocardiography between 1st February 2020 and 30th June 2021 were included. Clinical and echocardiographic data were uploaded using a secured web-based electronic database (REDCap). Results: Six hundred and seventy-seven patients were included and the first echo was performed 2 [1, 4] days after ICU admission. The median age was 65 [56, 73] years, and 71% were male. Left ventricle (LV) and/or right ventricle (RV) systolic dysfunction were found in 234 (34.5%) patients. 149 (22%) patients had LV systolic dysfunction (with or without RV dysfunction) without LV dilatation and no elevation in filling pressure. 152 (22.5%) had RV systolic dysfunction. In 517 patients with information on both paradoxical septal motion and quantitative RV size, 90 (17.4%) had acute cor pulmonale (ACP). ACP was associated with mechanical ventilation (OR > 4), pulmonary embolism (OR > 5) and increased PaCO2. Exploratory analyses showed that patients with ACP and older age were more likely to die in hospital (including ICU). Conclusion: Almost one-third of this cohort of critically ill COVID-19 patients exhibited abnormal LV and/or RV systolic function in their first echocardiography assessment. While LV systolic dysfunction appears similar to septic cardiomyopathy, RV systolic dysfunction was related to pressure overload due to positive pressure ventilation, hypercapnia and pulmonary embolism. ACP and age seemed to be associated with mortality in this cohort

    Research priorities for managing the impacts and dependencies of business upon food, energy, water and the environment

    Delivering access to sufficient food, energy and water resources to ensure human wellbeing is a major concern for governments worldwide. However, it is crucial to account for the β€˜nexus’ of interactions between these natural resources and the consequent implications for human wellbeing. The private sector has a critical role in driving positive change towards more sustainable nexus management and could reap considerable benefits from collaboration with researchers to devise solutions to some of the foremost sustainability challenges of today. Yet opportunities are missed because the private sector is rarely involved in the formulation of deliverable research priorities. We convened senior research scientists and influential business leaders to collaboratively identify the top forty questions that, if answered, would best help companies understand and manage their food-energy-water-environment nexus dependencies and impacts. Codification of the top order nexus themes highlighted research priorities around development of pragmatic yet credible tools that allow businesses to incorporate nexus interactions into their decision-making; demonstration of the business case for more sustainable nexus management; identification of the most effective levers for behaviour change; and understanding incentives or circumstances that allow individuals and businesses to take a leadership stance.     Diabetes in Danish Bank Voles (M. glareolus): Survivorship, Influence on Weight, and Evaluation of Polydipsia as a Screening Tool for Hyperglycaemia

    BACKGROUND: Previous studies have concluded that the development of polydipsia (PD, a daily water intake β‰₯ 21 ml) among captive Danish bank voles, is associated with the development of a type 1 diabetes (T1D), based on findings of hyperglycaemia, glucosuria, ketonuria/-emia, lipemia, destroyed beta cells, and presence of autoantibodies against GAD65, IA-2, and insulin. AIM AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed data from two separate colonies of Danish bank voles in order to 1) estimate survivorship after onset of PD, 2) evaluate whether the weight of PD voles differed from non-PD voles, and, 3), evaluate a state of PD as a practical and non-invasive tool to screen for voles with a high probability of hypeglycaemia. In addition, we discuss regional differences related to the development of diabetes in Scandinavian bank voles and the relevance of the Ljungan virus as proposed etiological agent. RESULTS: We found that median survival after onset of PD is at least 91 days (lower/upper quartiles = 57/134 days) with a maximum recording of at least 404 days survivorship. The development of PD did not influence the weight of Danish bank voles. The measures of accuracy when using PD as predictor of hyperglycaemia, i.e. sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value, equalled 69%, 97%, 89%, and 89%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The relatively long survival of Danish PD bank voles suggests potentials for this model in future studies of the long-term complications of diabetes, of which some observations are mentioned. Data also indicates that diabetes in Danish bank is not associated with a higher body weight. Finally, the method of using measurements of daily water intake to screen for voles with a high probability of hyperglycaemia constitutes a considerable refinement when compared to the usual, invasive, methods

    BAAV Transcytosis Requires an Interaction with Ξ²-1-4 Linked- Glucosamine and gp96

    Cell surface carbohydrates play an important role in virus entry and intracellular trafficking. Bovine Adeno-Associated Virus (BAAV) uses plasma membrane gangliosides for transduction and infection. In addition, independent of the infectious pathway, BAAV also has the ability to pass through barrier epithelia and endothelia using a transcytosis pathway dependent upon the presence of cell surface carbohydrates. Thus, in order to better define the carbohydrate interactions that are necessary for BAAV infection or transcytosis, a glycan microarray composed of both natural and synthetic carbohydrates was probed with HA-tagged BAAV particles. This identified chitotriose, a trimer of Ξ²-1-4-linked N-acetyl glucosamine, as having an interaction with BAAV. Competition experiments showed that the BAAV interaction with this carbohydrate is not necessary for infection but is instead important in the transcytosis pathway. The Ξ²-1-4-linked N-acetyl glucosamine modification has been reported on gp96, a glycoprotein involved in the transcytosis of bacteria and toxins. Significantly, immunoprecipitation and competition experiments with an anti-gp96 antibody and a soluble form of gp96, respectively, showed this glycoprotein can also interact with BAAV to serve as a receptor for its transcytosis

    Glycans as receptors for influenza pathogenesis

    Influenza A viruses, members of the Orthomyxoviridae family, are responsible for annual seasonal influenza epidemics and occasional global pandemics. The binding of viral coat glycoprotein hemagglutinin (HA) to sialylated glycan receptors on host epithelial cells is the critical initial step in the infection and transmission of these viruses. Scientists believe that a switch in the binding specificity of HA from Neu5AcΞ±2-3Gal linked (Ξ±2-3) to Neu5AcΞ±2-6Gal linked (Ξ±2-6) glycans is essential for the crossover of the viruses from avian to human hosts. However, studies have shown that the classification of glycan binding preference of HA based on sialic acid linkage alone is insufficient to establish a correlation between receptor specificity of HA and the efficient transmission of influenza A viruses. A recent study reported extensive diversity in the structure and composition of Ξ±2-6 glycans (which goes beyond the sialic acid linkage) in human upper respiratory epithelia and identified different glycan structural topologies. Biochemical examination of the multivalent HA binding to these diverse sialylated glycan structures also demonstrated that high affinity binding of HA to Ξ±2-6 glycans with a characteristic umbrella-like structural topology is critical for efficient human adaptation and human-human transmission of influenza A viruses.
