Overview of fast on-board integrated battery chargers for electric vehicles based on multiphase machines and power electronics
The study provides an extensive overview of on-board integrated chargers for electric vehicles that are based on multiphase (more than three phases) machines and power electronics. A common attribute of all discussed topologies is that they do not require a charger as a separate device since its role is transferred to the already existing drivetrain elements, predominantly a multiphase machine and an inverter. The study demonstrates how additional degrees of freedom that exist in multiphase systems can be conveniently utilised to achieve torque-free charging operation. Therefore, although three-phase (or multiphase) currents flow through machines' stator windings, they do not generate any torque; thus the machines do not have to be mechanically locked. Cost and weight saving is achieved in this way, while the available space is increased. For each topology operating principles are explained, and its control elaborated in detail for both charging and vehicle-to-grid mode. Finally, the validity of theoretical considerations and control algorithms of some of the existing charging solutions is experimentally verified and experimental performance of all discussed topologies is compared
Positron and positronium annihilation patterns in zeolites and bulk ceramics
Positron lifetime (LT) measurements have revealed that in porous media the annihilation pattern is probably dominated by a near-saturation level trapping both for the positron and the positronium as well, which masks the contribution from the ldquofree annihilationrdquo, i.e., annihilation from delocalised positrons. In this work we compare positron lifetime spectra of crystalline zeolites with bulk ceramic materials fabricated by sintering from the same constituents as the zeolites and analyse common features and differences between them. For the dense ceramic samples the contribution from long-living components to the annihilation pattern is substantially lower than that for the zeolites. The results are analysed with the aim to extract new knowledge for the zeolites and for the sensitivity limits for free volume studies in ceramics. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Evaluation of a prostate cancer e-health-tutorial
Background: Due to the multitude of therapy options the treatment decision after diagnosis of a localised prostate cancer is challenging. Compared to printed booklets, web based information technology offers more possibilities to tailor information to patients’ individual needs.
Objectives: To support the decision making process as well as the communication with patients we developed an online tutorial in a systematic process in the German speaking part of Switzerland and then tested it in a pilot study. The study investigated users’ satisfaction, the coverage of information needs, the preparation for decision making and the subjective quality of the decision.
Materials and methods: Based on already existing information material the online tutorial was developed in an iterative process using focus groups with patients and urologists. For the following evaluation in eight clinics a total of 87 patients were invited to access the platform and participate in the study. From these patients 56 used the tutorial and 48 answered both surveys (the first one 4 weeks after the first login and the second one 3 months after treatment decision). The surveys used the Preparation for Decision Making Scale (PDMS), the Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS), and the Decisional Regret Scale (DRS).
Results and Conclusion: Satisfaction with the tutorial is very high among patients with newly diagnosed localized prostate cancer. Users find their information needs sufficiently covered. Three months after the decision they felt that they were well prepared for the decision making (Mean PDMS 75, SD 23), they had low decisional conflict (Mean DCS 9.6, SD 11) and almost no decisional regret (Mean DRS 6.4, SD 9.6). Based on these findings the further use of the tutorial can be recommended
The influence of gibberellic acid and paclobutrazol on induction of somatic embryogenesis in wild type and hairy root cultures of Centaurium erythraea Gillib.
The effects of exogenous gibberellic acid (GA3) and paclobutrazol on induction of somatic embryos in wild type and hairy root culture of Centaurium erythraea Gillib. were investigated. Both compoundswere incorperated into 1/2 MS medium at 6 concentrations (0.01, 0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 1.0 and 3.0 ìM). Wild type root and hairy root explants cultured in the presence of GA3 at all tested concentrations under 16-h photoperiod or in the darkness decreased the number of somatic embryos that were produced. Paclobutrazol (0.3 mM) induced the largest number (19.7, 16.5) of somatic embryos in wild type and hairy root cultures, respectively. Rooting of plants derived from somatic embryos as achieved on ½MSmedium. These results indicate that paclobutrazol is beneficial for somatic embryo induction and formation in wild type and hairy root culture
Avoiding obscure topics and generalising findings produces higher impact research
Much academic research is never cited and may be rarely read, indicating wasted effort from the authors, referees and publishers. One reason that an article could be ignored is that its topic is, or appears to be, too obscure to be of wide interest, even if excellent scholarship produced it. This paper reports a word frequency analysis of 874,411 English article titles from 18 different Scopus natural, formal, life and health sciences categories 2009-2015 to assess the likelihood that research on obscure (rarely researched) topics is less cited. In all categories examined, unusual words in article titles associate with below average citation impact research. Thus, researchers considering obscure topics may wish to reconsider, generalise their study, or to choose a title that reflects the wider lessons that can be drawn. Authors should also consider including multiple concepts and purposes within their titles in order to attract a wider audience
European Respiratory Society guidelines for the management of adult bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis in adults is a chronic disorder associated with poor quality of life and frequent exacerbations in many patients. There have been no previous international guidelines. The European Respiratory Society guidelines for the management of adult bronchiectasis describe the appropriate investigation and treatment strategies determined by a systematic review of the literature.A multidisciplinary group representing respiratory medicine, microbiology, physiotherapy, thoracic surgery, primary care, methodology and patients considered the most relevant clinical questions (for both clinicians and patients) related to management of bronchiectasis. Nine key clinical questions were generated and a systematic review was conducted to identify published systematic reviews, randomised clinical trials and observational studies that answered these questions. We used the GRADE approach to define the quality of the evidence and the level of recommendations. The resulting guideline addresses the investigation of underlying causes of bronchiectasis, treatment of exacerbations, pathogen eradication, long term antibiotic treatment, anti-inflammatories, mucoactive drugs, bronchodilators, surgical treatment and respiratory physiotherapy. These recommendations can be used to benchmark quality of care for people with bronchiectasis across Europe and to improve outcomes
Diagnosing Highly-Parallel OpenMP Programs with Aggregated Grain Graphs
Grain graphs simplify OpenMP performance analysis by visualizing performance problems from a fork-join perspective that is familiar to programmers. However, when programmers decide to expose a high amount of parallelism by creating thousands of task and parallel for-loop chunk instances, the resulting grain graph becomes large and tedious to understand. We present an aggregation method that hierarchically groups related nodes together to reduce grain graphs of any size to one single node. This aggregated graph is then navigated by progressively uncovering groups and following visual clues that guide programmers towards problems while hiding non-problematic regions. Our approach enhances productivity by enabling programmers to understand problems in highly-parallel OpenMP programs with less effort than before.acceptedVersionThis is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in [Lecture Notes in Computer Science] Locked until 1.8.2019 due to copyright restrictions.
