    Impact of the vine water status on the berry and seed phenolic composition of 'Merlot' (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivated in a warm climate: Consequence for the style of wine

    During 2005 and 2006 four irrigation treatments were assayed in a vineyard growing 'Merlot' grapes located in a warm climate region. The treatments were kept for two years and the wine was produced the second year so that the response of the wines to water constraint was consistent. The phenolic parameters of the wines were analysed. The phenolic composition of the seeds was studied for both years and more significant differences were observed in the second. The results showed that when the deficiency increased, so did the concentration of total polyphenols, flavan-3-ols and tannins in the seeds. Pre-dawn leaf water constraint integrals between 20 and 24 Mpa as opposed to levels of 9 to 14 caused statistically significant increases in total polyphenols, flavan-3-ols and the colour index of the wine. These differences were manifested in sensory terms by significant intensification of the colour and body of the wines.

    Conductance through a Ti-atom impurity in Ag(100) and Au(111): An ionic model considering spin fluctuations

    We describe the interaction between a transition-metal atom and a noble-metal surface by using an ionic model in which the first Hund’s rule determines the filling of the atom’s d levels, and spin fluctuations occur due to the electron exchange between the metal band and the atom states. We apply our model to the case of adsorbed Ti atoms on noble-metal surfaces (Ag and Au) in which conductance measurements in scanning tunneling microscope experiments suggest a mixed-valence regime according to the position and width of the atomic resonance. By introducing, in our calculation, these two parameters as extracted from the experiment, we satisfactorily reproduce the experimental results in both cases. We find, in the Ag(100) surface, that the conductance spectrum reflects electronic characteristics of the metal surface modified by the presence of the magnetic atom; whereas, in the Au(111) case, only the projected density of states on the Ti atom determines the conductance spectrum shapeE.C.G., M.A.R., and C.S.G.C. acknowledge financial support from ANPCyT through Grant No. PICT2007-0811 and U.N.L. through a CAI + D grant.     Preanalytical errors: the professionals’ perspective

    This study was aimed at understanding the perspective on preanalytical errors from the point of view of the professionals involved in the preanalytical process. A significant contribution of their specialized knowledge and experience in day-to-day practice for identifying these kinds of mistakes, and their most frequent causes, was expected.It seems evident that weaknesses and threats are closely related to institutional organization aspects and the same is true for positive elements (strengths and opportunities). There is also an important appreciation of the staff’s implication. Staff´s opinions should be taken into account by institution managers, as they offer an approach that is different and complementary to the one traditionally applied, which is purely managerial and therefore not sufficient. The results should be complemented with more updated information. Multidisciplinary cooperation must involve not only professionals from different fields but also with different roles, i.e., managers, in order to obtain results that can be used to improve healthcare, save costs and to guarantee patient’s safety.     NGC 6705 a young α\alpha-enhanced Open Cluster from OCCASO data

    The stellar [α\alpha/Fe] abundance is sometimes used as a proxy for stellar age, following standard chemical evolution models for the Galaxy, as seen by different observational results. In this work we show that the Open Cluster NGC6705/M11 has a significant α\alpha-enhancement [α\alpha/Fe]>0.1>0.1 dex, despite its young age (\sim300 Myr), challenging the current paradigm. We use high resolution (R>65,000>65,000) high signal-to-noise (\sim70) spectra of 8 Red Clump stars, acquired within the OCCASO survey. We determine very accurate chemical abundances of several α\alpha elements, using an equivalent width methodology (Si, Ca and Ti), and spectral synthesis fits (Mg and O). We obtain [Si/Fe]=0.13±0.050.13\pm0.05, [Mg/Fe]=0.14±0.070.14\pm0.07, [O/Fe]=0.17±0.070.17\pm0.07, [Ca/Fe]=0.06±0.050.06\pm0.05 and [Ti/Fe]=0.03±0.030.03\pm0.03. Our results place these cluster within the group of young [α\alpha/Fe]-enhanced field stars recently found by several authors in the literature. The ages of our stars have an uncertainty of around 50 Myr, much more precise than for field stars. By integrating the cluster's orbit in several non-axisymmetric Galactic potentials, we establish the M11's most likely birth radius to lie between 6.8-7.5 kpc from the Galactic center, not far from its current position. With the robust Open Cluster age scale, our results prove that a moderate [α\alpha/Fe]-enhancement is no guarantee for a star to be old, and that not all α\alpha-enhanced stars can be explained with an evolved blue straggler scenario.     Psychosocial factors related to physical activity in frail and prefrail elderly people

    Background: Increased physical activity (PA) is a very important factor in a healthy aging lifestyle. Psychosocial factors have also a main role in the initiation and maintenance of this behavior, but nowadays its implications for frailty elderly people are unknown, therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the psychosociological variables of behavior change that influence the practice of (PA) in frail and prefrail elderly. Methods: A total of 103 frail and pre-frail elderly people (72 females) participated in this cross-sectional study, on the framework of the EXERNET-Elder3.0 project. Age ranged from 68–94 years (mean = 80.4 ± 5.9 years). Individualized face-to-face interviews according to the constructs of the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) (decisional balance (DB) and self-efficacy (SE)], social support (SS) (family and friends) and outcome expectations (OE) were administered to all participants. Results: Significant differences were found in DB, perceived benefits (PBn), SE, family-related SS and OE as a function of stages of change (SoC) (p < 0.005), but no significant were found in perceived barriers (PBrr) (p = 0.259) and friends-related SS (p = 0.068). According to the Scheffé post-hoc test, those in advanced SoC (Action-Maintenance), scored higher than those in lower SoC (Precontemplation-Contemplation and Preparation). Conclusion: The scores obtained from the study variables differed according to the SoC, supporting the external validity for the use of the TTM in frailty elderly. Further research is needed to determine the impact of PBrr and friends-related SS on this people, as well as to identify the validity of this model in the long-term in this population
