    Get PDF
Purpose – The aim of this study is to obtain a broader knowledge of innovative pedagogical practices in higher education, by analysing the particular case of the Higher Institute of Administration and Languages (ISAL). The literature review reveals a gap in this scientific field, and filling this gap is as imperative as the need to articulate higher education with the Students’ Profile by the End of Compulsory Schooling. Design/methodology/approach – This research adopts a qualitative methodological approach, in order to analyse the students and teachers’ perceptions of the active learning methodologies implemented at ISAL. Data were collected from a closed-ended questionnaire, aimed at a population composed of students and teachers. Findings – The literature review reveals a gap in this scientific field, particularly in Portugal. Filling this gap is as imperative as the need to articulate higher education with the Students’ Profile by the End of Compulsory Schooling. Practical implications – With the adoption of this methodological approach, this research intends to verify not only whether the innovative pedagogical practices addressed in the literature review are implemented in this institution, but also to identify obstacles to their implementation. With regard to the results, several pedagogical innovation practices are already implemented, even though some limitations to their implementation are identified. Originality/value – This research allows identifying indicators that are essential to outline an intervention plan in the pedagogical practices implemented at ISAL or other higher education institutions and contributes to assessing the current state of pedagogical practices in higher education.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abstract: In rural Portugal, the main causes for the change observed in recent decades have distinct origins. Several authors argue that the main cause for socioeconomic and demographic changes occurring mostly in rural areas following the sixties, is due to emigration. A wide range of architectural styles brought by the immigrants came, inevitably, to integrate the landscape. Although, it is not the first time in Portugal’s history that these phenomena of architectural patterns transformation are discerned, it becomes fundamental the study of their impacts. In rural areas, it is difficult to distinguish at first, which are the households from immigrants and from people that did not emigrate, due to the similarities existing between them. In response to the objectives, it is proposed to identify the mutability of popular architecture from the vocabulary introduced by immigrants and consequently, the definition of the morphological changes occurring in rural households (1960-2000) in Vila Nova de Cerveira. Methodologically, this research is a comparative study of 150 enquires, of descriptive and documental type, based on methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis (as described in Chapter 1). The investigation is carried out in five parts. Chapter 2 creates the ground to a theoretical framework and chapter 3 to the analysis of the inquiry results. Chapter 4 triangulates the data from where it emerges a consistent systematization of results, thus providing data to obtain findings and the development of conclusions (chapter 5). This research aims to provide an valuable contribution to knowledge and a better understanding of changes affecting Minho rural architecture since 1960, as well as the architectural styles introduced in the post-migration period. Knowledge of interventions in rural construction resulted on the identification of the specificity of different households morphology in Vila Nova de Cerveira

This paper describes a challenge given to freshman students of the Integrated Master degree of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) – University of Minho, Portugal. It was developed in the context of the Integrated Project of Industrial Engineering and Management 1 (IPIEM1). First-year students were challenged to interview an Industrial Engineer, or someone with this function, in a company. That was the second time the challenge was proposed to students of this program, after the first time in 2013. The challenge, called “IEM@ProjectNetworking”, has as main idea to allow students, on their own, to establish network with an IEM active professional and to get a full picture of what could be their future career. Students worked in pairs and had a semi-structured interview guide to help them to perform the interview. All interviews were synthetized in a written report and in a summary presented orally. Thirty-three interviews were conducted and assessed by a group of teachers and researchers. Teachers believe that by presenting this challenge, students will be more focused and aware of the contents given in the courses of the following semesters. At the same time, teachers obtain a perspective of what IEM professionals are doing and update their knowledge about industry needs. In fact, many findings were obtained with this challenge, namely: 1) a company database and the connection to IEM professionals for their future contact; 2) the stimulus of students’ capacity of initiative; 3) the students learned how to prepare and conduct an interview, to communicate, to extract the most important from an interview; and; 4) the students acquire knowledge where they can work and the variety of functions which they may be engaged. The assessment was based on how the task was organised and accomplished (written report and oral presentation in pitch format). Based on the analysis of results obtained from an online survey applied to students and their feedback during the oral presentation, it is possible to state that the challenge has been mastered perfectly, with a “mission accomplished” feeling.FCT -Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia(UIDB/00319/2020

The purpose of this study was the elaboration of a comparative analysis based on scientific publications of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), deposited in the Digital Library (repository) in the period 2004-2013. The teeth total loss is one of the worst clinical situations that can be found in Dentistry and it may cause masticatory ability reduction and consequent interference in food digestion. Besides, it may affect esthetics and phonation. This situation contributes to a decrease of life quality and self-esteem. The complete denture is the most used therapeutic modality in the rehabilitation of complete edentulous people. A problem that should be faced, when the total prosthesis is indicated, lays exactly on the fact that the patients resist being toothless, while they wait for the osseous and tissue repairs, used in the posterior prosthesis confection. Another problem is associated with much reabsorbed ridges, which are unable to present retention and stability conditions to a complete denture. The utilization of immediate complete dentures (ICD) and dental implants can solve these problems. The SUS doesn't offer these treatment modalities, neither in the basic attention, nor in the special. The curricular disciplines of FOUFMG don't offer the necessary information on how to rehabilitate edentulous people with few residual alveolar ridge using implants or those unsatisfied with the use of their complete denture. The the objective of the Immediate Total Prosthesis/Overdentures Project implantation was to fill the lack of that practice in the curriculum and in the patient treatment. The present work aims to present the PTI/Overdentures Project to the academic community, a project with assistance characteristics, practical/theoretical nature and that was developed for the FOUFMG graduation students and for the patients, who use complete denture or with indication to use it. The activity shows a huge utility, both to users and students, as it fulfills a gap in the health social service and of the curriculum. The impact in the improving patients' life quality is evaluated by applying the Oral Health Impact Profile - OHIP-14 questionary. The initial objectives selected by the project coordinators have satisfactorily been reached because a well defined attendance and a dynamic and interdisciplinary action were made. Also, the extension activity has provided an interaction between learning, research and knowledge production areas, giving a high impact in the academic formation of the participant students and consolidating the formation of a citizen professional, and a positive dialogic relationship with the assisted community. Besides, it resulted on a high improvement in the life quality of the patients. The conclusion is that the project has been satisfactorily achieved its objectives, benefiting students and patients.</p

ICD AND OVERDENTURES: IMPROVING ESTHETICS, MASTICATION AND QUALITY OF LIFE

The teeth total loss is one of the worst clinical situations that can be found in Dentistry and it may cause masticatory ability reduction and consequent interference in food digestion. Vitrified grinding wheels are used in many manufacturing industries to shape and finish metals and other materials in an efficient way. This work addresses a new approach with the use of tetraethyl orthosilicate solution (TEOS solution or silica sol), as an additive, in vitrified abrasive composites for grinding wheels. Different types of composite were produced using always the same materials and processing methods, but with different TEOS contents. Compared with a reference abrasive grinding wheel, the addition of TEOS promoted an improvement in the abrasive tool performance. The new formulation for vitrified abrasive composites showed better dimensional stability during processing (drying and sintering), and could be applied to the production of grinding tools with high dimensional accuracy. With the addition of 3.75 wt% of TEOS there was an increase in the strength of the matrix bonds. The porosity of the composite increased by 7% (from 43.6 to 46.9%), also improving its wear properties, with the quadrupling of the grinding ratio of the abrasive composite. In addition, the surface roughness of the composite decreased (from Ra = 22.9 to 8.4 μm) allowing to improve the surface finish of the workpieces. This work was supported by Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização , with the code POCI-01-0247-FEDER-038492.
