alpha-particle production in the scattering of 6He by 208Pb at energies around the Coulomb barrier
New experimental data from the scattering of 6He+208Pb at energies around and
below the Coulomb barrier are presented. The yield of breakup products coming
from projectile fragmentation is dominated by a strong group of
particles.
The energy and angular distributions of this group have been analyzed and
compared with theoretical calculations. This analysis indicates that the
particles emitted at backward angles in this reaction are mainly due
to two-neutron transfer to weakly bound states of the final nucleus.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures. Nuclear Physics A792 (2007) 2-1
Long range effects on the optical model of 6He around the Coulomb barrier
We present an optical model (OM) analysis of the elastic scattering data of
the reactions 6He+27Al and 6He+208Pb at incident energies around the Coulomb
barrier. The bare part of the optical potential is constructed microscopically
by means of a double folding procedure, using the Sao Paulo prescription
without any renormalization. This bare interaction is supplemented with a
Coulomb dipole polarization (CDP) potential, which takes into account the
effect of the dipole Coulomb interaction. For this CDP potential, we use an
analytical formula derived from the semiclassical theory of Coulomb excitation.
The rest of the optical potential is parametrized in terms of Woods-Saxon
shapes. In the 6He+208Pb case, the analysis confirms the presence of long range
components, in agreement with previous works. Four-body Continuum-Discretized
Coupled-Channels calculations have been performed in order to better understand
the features of the optical potentials found in the OM analysis. This study
searches to elucidate some aspects of the optical potential of weakly bound
systems, such as the dispersion relation and the long range (attractive and

Spectroscopy of Na: Bridging the two-proton radioactivity of Mg
The unbound nucleus Na, the intermediate nucleus in the two-proton
radioactivity of Mg, was studied by the measurement of the resonant
elastic scattering reaction Ne(p,Ne)p performed at 4 A.MeV.
Spectroscopic properties of the low-lying states were obtained in a R-matrix
analysis of the excitation function. Using these new results, we show that the
lifetime of the Mg radioactivity can be understood assuming a sequential
emission of two protons via low energy tails of Na resonances
Scattering of 15C on 208Pb at energies near the Coulomb barrier: Study of the experimental device response via the 12C+208Pb scattering
4 pags., 5 figs., 1 tab.There are evidences that the 15C nucleus has an extended neutron distribution or a "neutron halo", but this situation is far from clear. If 15C has 1n-halo, the scattering dynamics should be affected and the angular distribution of the elastic channels should be sensitive to coupling effects due to the halo configuration. The objetive of this study is to understand the role of the halo in 15C by investigating its dynamical response in intense electric fields at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. For this purpose experiment IS619 was conducted performing the 15C + 208Pb elastic scattering reaction at HIE-ISOLDE, CERN. The beam energy was 4.37 MeV/u, which is very close to the Coulomb barrier of the system. The experimental setup used was the global detection system GLORIA, a six silicon telescopes array enable to measure the energy and angular distributions of the scattered particles. During the experiment, the 12C+208Pb scattering at 4.37 MeV/u was measured for calibration. The results of the 12C+208Pb measurement were used to fine-tune the geometry of the experimental setup and it is presented in this contribution.We acknowledge the funding through the grant MCIN/AEI PID2019-104390GB-I00 and GIFMAN associated unit between CSIC and Universidad de Huelva.Peer reviewe
Reaction dynamics studies for the system 7Be + 208Pb at Coulomb barrier energies
The scattering process of the Radioactive Ion Beam 7 Be from a 208 Pb target was measured at three near-barrier energies. The quasi-elastic angular distributions were analyzed within the framework of the optical model to extract the reaction cross sections. The results are compared with those obtained for the reactions induced by the mirror projectile 7 Li and by the lightest particle-stable lithium isotope 6 Li on the same target. The angular distributions for the production of the two 7 Be constituent clusters, namely 3 He and 4 He, were also measured. In agreement with what observed for the interaction of 7 Be with lighter targets, the production of the heavier helium isotope resulted to be much more abundant than that of its lighter counterpart
Scattering of halo nuclei on heavy targets at energies around the Coulomb barrier : The case of 11Be on 197Au
This work reports on the scattering of 11Be on 197Au at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier. By experimentally identifying the elastic scattering, inelastic scattering and breakup channels, and comparing them with different calculations, valuable information on the 11Be structure and its B(E1) distribution to the continuum are obtained. On top of that, a deeper understanding of the scattering process at low energies is achieved for reactions of this kind, making these studies extendable to other loosely-bound systems like 17,19
Trends and outcome of neoadjuvant treatment for rectal cancer: A retrospective analysis and critical assessment of a 10-year prospective national registry on behalf of the Spanish Rectal Cancer Project
Introduction: Preoperative treatment and adequate surgery increase local control in rectal cancer. However, modalities and indications for neoadjuvant treatment may be controversial. Aim of this study was to assess the trends of preoperative treatment and outcomes in patients with rectal cancer included in the Rectal Cancer Registry of the Spanish Associations of Surgeons.
Method: This is a STROBE-compliant retrospective analysis of a prospective database. All patients operated on with curative intention included in the Rectal Cancer Registry were included. Analyses were performed to compare the use of neoadjuvant/adjuvant treatment in three timeframes: I)2006–2009; II)2010–2013; III)2014–2017. Survival analyses were run for 3-year survival in timeframes I-II.
Results: Out of 14, 391 patients, 8871 (61.6%) received neoadjuvant treatment. Long-course chemo/radiotherapy was the most used approach (79.9%), followed by short-course radiotherapy ± chemotherapy (7.6%). The use of neoadjuvant treatment for cancer of the upper third (15-11 cm) increased over time (31.5%vs 34.5%vs 38.6%, p = 0.0018). The complete regression rate slightly increased over time (15.6% vs 16% vs 18.5%; p = 0.0093); the proportion of patients with involved circumferential resection margins (CRM) went down from 8.2% to 7.3%and 5.5% (p = 0.0004). Neoadjuvant treatment significantly decreased positive CRM in lower third tumors (OR 0.71, 0.59–0.87, Cochrane-Mantel-Haenszel P = 0.0008). Most ypN0 patients also received adjuvant therapy. In MR-defined stage III patients, preoperative treatment was associated with significantly longer local-recurrence-free survival (p < 0.0001), and cancer-specific survival (p < 0.0001). The survival benefit was smaller in upper third cancers.
Conclusion: There was an increasing trend and a potential overuse of neoadjuvant treatment in cancer of the upper rectum. Most ypN0 patients received postoperative treatment. Involvement of CRM in lower third tumors was reduced after neoadjuvant treatment. Stage III and MRcN + benefited the most
RICORS2040 : The need for collaborative research in chronic kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a silent and poorly known killer. The current concept of CKD is relatively young and uptake by the public, physicians and health authorities is not widespread. Physicians still confuse CKD with chronic kidney insufficiency or failure. For the wider public and health authorities, CKD evokes kidney replacement therapy (KRT). In Spain, the prevalence of KRT is 0.13%. Thus health authorities may consider CKD a non-issue: very few persons eventually need KRT and, for those in whom kidneys fail, the problem is 'solved' by dialysis or kidney transplantation. However, KRT is the tip of the iceberg in the burden of CKD. The main burden of CKD is accelerated ageing and premature death. The cut-off points for kidney function and kidney damage indexes that define CKD also mark an increased risk for all-cause premature death. CKD is the most prevalent risk factor for lethal coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the factor that most increases the risk of death in COVID-19, after old age. Men and women undergoing KRT still have an annual mortality that is 10- to 100-fold higher than similar-age peers, and life expectancy is shortened by ~40 years for young persons on dialysis and by 15 years for young persons with a functioning kidney graft. CKD is expected to become the fifth greatest global cause of death by 2040 and the second greatest cause of death in Spain before the end of the century, a time when one in four Spaniards will have CKD. However, by 2022, CKD will become the only top-15 global predicted cause of death that is not supported by a dedicated well-funded Centres for Biomedical Research (CIBER) network structure in Spain. Realizing the underestimation of the CKD burden of disease by health authorities, the Decade of the Kidney initiative for 2020-2030 was launched by the American Association of Kidney Patients and the European Kidney Health Alliance. Leading Spanish kidney researchers grouped in the kidney collaborative research network Red de Investigación Renal have now applied for the Redes de Investigación Cooperativa Orientadas a Resultados en Salud (RICORS) call for collaborative research in Spain with the support of the Spanish Society of Nephrology, Federación Nacional de Asociaciones para la Lucha Contra las Enfermedades del Riñón and ONT: RICORS2040 aims to prevent the dire predictions for the global 2040 burden of CKD from becoming true
