    Planetary exploration vehicles (rovers) can encounter with a great variety of situations. Most of them are related to the terrain, which can cause the end of the mission if these vehicles are not able to traverse it. It was the case of Spirit rover, which got stuck in loose sand, making it impossible to continue advancing. A solution to this is to make rovers capable of modifying their locomotion to traverse terrains with particular terramechanic parameters.Universidad de Málaga.     Robust symmetric multiplication for programmable analog VLSI array processing

    This paper presents an electrically programmable analog multiplier. The circuit performs the multiplication between an input variable and an electrically selectable scaling factor. The multiplier is divided in several blocks: a linearized transconductor, binary weighted current mirrors and a differential to single-ended current adder. This paper shows the advantages introduced using a linearized OTA-based multiplier. The circuit presented renders higher linearity and symmetry in the output current than a previously reported single-transistor multiplier.     Relevance of Social, Economic, and Environmental Impacts on Residents’ Satisfaction with the Public Administration of Tourism

    Those in charge of tourism destinations face the need to create tourism development models compatible with the essence of the localities that they manage. These models have to be sustainable, both environmentally and socially, and also must become drivers of the local economy. However, tourists also generate negative impacts in the locality which, when they are perceived by the residents, can give rise to a rejection of visitors. Hence, improving the tourism management is necessary. This is why to know the residents’ perceptions about the impacts of tourism is essential. Moreover, measuring the impact effects on their satisfaction with the public administration of the destination can be of great usefulness. This study falls into this research line, as it proposes a model to measure these impacts and their effect on satisfaction. To do so, an empirical study is performed among residents in the city of Seville (southern Spain, one of the most visited destinations in the world), based on subjective economic, social, and environmental indicators. The results show that the citizens value three types of impacts, the social impact coming after the economic impact as to its influence on their satisfaction with the administration. Based on this, we postulate that the efforts made to attract events to the city, or to improve connections to access a broader market, must be approached as public procurements in which selection criteria that are compatible with the destination’s positioning and strategy prevail. Social and environmental criteria should be considered among these criteria

    A Focal-Plane Image Processor for Low Power Adaptive Capture and Analysis of the Visual Stimulus

    Portable applications of artificial vision are limited by the fact that conventional processing schemes fail to meet the specifications under a tight power budget. A bio-inspired approach, based in the goal-directed organization of sensory organs found in nature, has been employed to implement a focal-plane image processor for low power vision applications. The prototype contains a multi-layered CNN structure concurrent with 32times32 photosensors with locally programmable integration time for adaptive image capture with on-chip local and global adaptation mechanisms. A more robust and linear multiplier block has been employed to reduce irregular analog wave propagation ought to asymmetric synapses. The predicted computing power per power consumption, 142MOPS/mW, is orders of magnitude above what rendered by conventional architectures

    Relation between metacognitive strategies, motivation to think, and critical thinking skills

    [EN] Critical thinking is a complex reasoning skill, and even though it is hard to reach a consensus on its definition, there is agreement on it being an eminently cognitive skill. It is strongly related with reflective and metacognitive skills, as well as attitudinal or motivational aspects, although no model has yet been able to integrate these three elements. We present herein the preliminary results of a study seeking to establish these relations, in a sample of Chilean university students. 435 students from three universities participated, of which 88 were men, 333 were women, and 14 did not indicate their gender. Their ages ranges between 18 and 51  years old (M  =  21, SD  =  3.09). Three instruments were applied, one to measure metacognitive strategies, one to measure motivation to critical thinking, and a third to measure critical thinking skills. The relation was analyzed via structural equations. The results show a positive, strong, and significant relation between metacognition and motivation to think. However, only a weak significant relation was observed between motivation to think and critical thinking, and no direct relation was found between metacognition and critical thinking. We hypothesize a significant but moderate relation between the variables, where metacognition influences motivation to think, which in turn influences critical thinking skills. Factors are discussed which could negatively affect the studied relations, as well as the importance of generating integrated models between the three variables, as they would show a theoretical and empirical link

    "Delos sos oios tan fuerte mientre lorando" : un cambio sintáctico examinado a través de un corpus digitalizado

    En este trabajo se aplica la noción del continuo sociolingüístico al plano diacrónico del castellano para estudiar el origen y la evolución de un cambio sintáctico a través de los documentos notariales del monasterio de Sahagún (siglos IX al XII). Se trata de un conjunto de textos medievales no literarios con escritura latinizante y parcialmente logográfica en transición hacia las reformas carolingias, en los que se demuestra que los escribas mezclaban el latín con el romance hablado innovador. Gracias al estudio de estos documentos mediante la herramienta de análisis digital MOCA (Multimedia Online Corpus Analysis), se ha podido establecer, por un lado, una clara relación entre diversas estructuras gramaticales distintas formadas por la secuencia demostrativo/artículo + posesivo + sustantivo ya desde época muy temprana; por otro, constatar la presencia de la construcción sintáctica artículo + posesivo + sustantivo incluso en los textos notariales, a pesar de estar escritos aparentemente en latín.In this study, we extend the idea of a synchronic sociolinguistic continuum to a diachronic framework in order to examine the origin and evolution of a particular Spanish syntactic change - the possessive construction article + possessive adjective + noun, for example los sos oios - with data extracted from a digitalized corpus of early medieval notarial documents from the Sahagun Monastery on the border of Castile and Leon (9th to 12th centuries). These texts are written in a mixed or Latinate style that employs both Latin morphology and lexis along with other forms rendered in completely reformed, phonetic spellings patterned after the spoken Romance vernacular at the time. We used a digital corpus tool called MOCA (Multimedia Online Corpus Analysis) to follow the evolution of this possessive construction over time. This methodology allowed us to establish a linguistic continuum between Romance syntax in documents written both before and after the adoption of Carolingian orthographic reforms
