This study aims to determine the significance of the relationship between physical appearance comparison and body dissatisfaction. Participants totaled 203 women using TikTok and/or Instagram using a purposive sampling technique. The data collection method used is the Physical Appearance Comparison Scale-Revised (PACS-R) from Schaefer and Thompson which has been tested for construct validity in Indonesia by Qidwati and the Body Dissatisfaction Scale (BDS) from Tariq and Ijaz which has been tested for construct validity in Indonesia by Arshuha. The data analysis technique used is the Pearson Product Moment correlation technique. From the results of data analysis, a correlation coefficient (rxy) of 0.548 was obtained with a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.01), which means that there is a significant positive relationship between physical appearance comparison and body dissatisfaction in female TikTok and/or Instagram users. This means that a high physical appearance comparison will be followed by a high body dissatisfaction, conversely if a low physical appearance comparison will be followed by a low body dissatisfaction

A socio-ecological landscape analysis of human-wildlife conflict in northern Botswana

Human-wildlife conflict is one of the most pressing issues in conservation. Low-income rural communities are disproportionately affected by negative interactions with large predators, which often leads to retaliatory killings and persecution of the animals. To overcome this, socio-ecological studies that merge existing knowledge of large predator ecology with long-term livestock depredation monitoring are required. We examined patterns and drivers of livestock depredation in northern Botswana, using a mixed effects model of the government's long-term monitoring data on human-wildlife conflict, to identify ways to reduce depredation at key spatial and temporal scales. We compared the results to farmers' understanding of their personal risk within the landscape. We analysed 342 depredation events that occurred during 2008-2016, using variables measured at different scales. The variables affecting the locations of depredation events at the 2-km scale were distance to protected areas and predator and herbivore density, with increased depredation in the wet season. At a 1-km scale, herbivore density did not have a significant effect, but the effect of other variables was unchanged. The 4-km scale model was influenced by livestock and herbivore density, with increased depredation in the wet season. Livestock depredation could be reduced by establishing an 8-km livestock-free buffer along the protected area boundary. There was disparity between government data on human-wildlife conflict, depredation reported by farmers in interviews and farmers' risk awareness. Farmers would benefit from workshops providing tools to make evidence-based decisions and minimize their risk of negative interactions with wildlife. This would ultimately contribute to wildlife conservation in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area

Factors influencing prey selection include availability, sex, age, body condition, body size, the prey’s anti-predatory mechanisms such as vigilance and speed, and habitat selection.https://sawma.co.za/african-journal-of-wildlife-researcham2022Mammal Research InstituteZoology and Entomolog

Collapse of the world's largest herbivores

    Get PDF
Large wild herbivores are crucial to ecosystems and human societies. We highlight the 74 largest terrestrial herbivore species on Earth (body mass ≥100 kg), the threats they face, their important and often overlooked ecosystem effects, and the conservation efforts needed to save them and their predators from extinction. Large herbivores are generally facing dramatic population declines and range contractions, such that ~60% are threatened with extinction. Nearly all threatened species are in developing countries, where major threats include hunting, land-use change, and resource depression by livestock. Loss of large herbivores can have cascading effects on other species including large carnivores, scavengers, mesoherbivores, small mammals, and ecological processes involving vegetation, hydrology, nutrient cycling, and fire regimes. The rate of large herbivore decline suggests that ever-larger swaths of the world will soon lack many of the vital ecological services these animals provide, resulting in enormous ecological and social costs

    Accumulation of Metals in Sapropel

    No full text
Concentrations of 13 metallic elements were determined in organic rich lake sediment profiles from three lakes – Padēlis, Pilcines and Pilveļu (Latvia). Concentrations of metallic elements are related to the basic chemical properties of sapropel– moisture, organic matter, carbonate content and elemental composition. Sapropel from the studied lakes is not polluted by industrial sources and can be considered as prospective material for agricultural and other applications. The heavy metal concentration depends on the organic matter content of the sediment and the geochemical properties (composition of minerals, rate of their weathering, hydrological and climatological conditions) of the lakes’ catchment areas. Increased concentrations of Pb and Cd are found in upper layers of sediments from anthropogenic pollution
