    Liberal arts education in the universities of Greater China: historical legacy, current models, and future prospects

    Liberal arts education is usually regarded as a legacy from the Greek and Roman classics, adapted in American universities, with little awareness of its deep roots in Confucian heritage education. In this paper, we begin with an introduction to the liberal arts in Chinese Christian universities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries where Chinese classical scholars cooperated with North American missionaries in creating campuses characterised by a rich flow of ideas and architectural patterns rooted in China’s traditions. Although these Christian universities were closed more than seventy years ago, their influence and legacy are still having an impact on higher education in China and beyond. Some institutions carried on their legacy and have developed into universities with strong liberal arts traditions. Following this thread, the paper presents three current models of liberal arts education in universities in Greater China (Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China), showing how each has built on this inheritance in a distinctive Chinese context. In the final section of the paper, we discuss the possibility of reimagining Confucian humanism through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This in turn serves to rephrase the Confucian canon in a universal language and explore its contribution to whole person development for current and future social challenges, which is the core value of liberal arts education in Chinese contexts

Desde estas consideraciones, la superación de la denun- ciada 'parálisis' de la Educación Comparada (Carney, 2010), reclama el empleo acadé - mico de dichas actitudes.     Fracture Incidence and the Relevance of Dietary and Lifestyle Factors Differ in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong: An International Comparison of Longitudinal Cohort Study Data.

    Geographic variation in fracture risk may be due to divergent profiles of dietary, lifestyle, and other risk factors between populations. We investigated differences in fracture rates between two older-population cohorts: the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) Norfolk cohort (n = 7732) in the United Kingdom (UK), and the Mr and Ms Os cohort (n = 3956) in Hong Kong (HK). Data were collected by questionnaires, laboratory assessments, and hospital records. Incidence of hip, spine, and wrist fractures in the two cohorts was calculated and multivariable regression was used to explore variables important to fracture risk. Total hip, spine, and wrist fracture incidence was higher in the UK vs HK for women (13.70 vs 8.76 per 1000 person-years; p < 0.001), but not men (5.95 vs 5.37 per 1000 person-years; p = 0.337), and the proportions of different fractures also varied between cohorts (p < 0.001). Hip fracture was the most common UK fracture (accounting for 56.8% fractures in men and 52.6% in women), while wrist fracture was most common in HK (42.9% in men and 57.9% in women). The major contributor to total fracture risk in multivariable regression models of both cohorts and sexes, was age; with BMI also an important contributor to fracture risk HK men and UK women. The distribution of factors relevant to fracture risk, and the rates of different fractures, varied significantly between UK and HK cohorts. However, the importance of each factor in contributing to fracture risk was similar between the cohorts. The differences in fracture rates suggest targeted approaches may be required when developing interventions and public health recommendations to reduce the burden of osteoporosis in these two countries

    Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage. We did subgroup analyses of the RESTART trial to explore whether these brain imaging features modify the effects of antiplatelet therapy

    Abstract – This article examines the history and future prospects of comparative and international education with particular reference to the impact of globalisation and Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs). Connections and interactions between comparative educationists and the technologies of printing and electronic communications are examined in a historical context. The global nature of commu-nications in comparative and international education is demonstrated both spatially and historically, using information from all regions of the world. The changing nature of technologies is noted to have broadened the audience for comparative insights. The development of textbooks, journals, conferences, international agencies, the Internet, web-based communications, and professional comparative education soci-eties is related to the themes of communications and globalisation.     Background: Antiplatelet therapy reduces the risk of major vascular events for people with occlusive vascular disease, although it might increase the risk of intracranial haemorrhage. Patients surviving the commonest subtype of intracranial haemorrhage, intracerebral haemorrhage, are at risk of both haemorrhagic and occlusive vascular events, but whether antiplatelet therapy can be used safely is unclear. We aimed to estimate the relative and absolute effects of antiplatelet therapy on recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage and whether this risk might exceed any reduction of occlusive vascular events. Methods: The REstart or STop Antithrombotics Randomised Trial (RESTART) was a prospective, randomised, open-label, blinded endpoint, parallel-group trial at 122 hospitals in the UK. We recruited adults (≥18 years) who were taking antithrombotic (antiplatelet or anticoagulant) therapy for the prevention of occlusive vascular disease when they developed intracerebral haemorrhage, discontinued antithrombotic therapy, and survived for 24 h. Computerised randomisation incorporating minimisation allocated participants (1:1) to start or avoid antiplatelet therapy. We followed participants for the primary outcome (recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage) for up to 5 years. We analysed data from all randomised participants using Cox proportional hazards regression, adjusted for minimisation covariates. This trial is registered with ISRCTN (number ISRCTN71907627). Findings: Between May 22, 2013, and May 31, 2018, 537 participants were recruited a median of 76 days (IQR 29–146) after intracerebral haemorrhage onset: 268 were assigned to start and 269 (one withdrew) to avoid antiplatelet therapy. Participants were followed for a median of 2·0 years (IQR [1·0– 3·0]; completeness 99·3%). 12 (4%) of 268 participants allocated to antiplatelet therapy had recurrence of intracerebral haemorrhage compared with 23 (9%) of 268 participants allocated to avoid antiplatelet therapy (adjusted hazard ratio 0·51 [95% CI 0·25–1·03]; p=0·060). 18 (7%) participants allocated to antiplatelet therapy experienced major haemorrhagic events compared with 25 (9%) participants allocated to avoid antiplatelet therapy (0·71 [0·39–1·30]; p=0·27), and 39 [15%] participants allocated to antiplatelet therapy had major occlusive vascular events compared with 38 [14%] allocated to avoid antiplatelet therapy (1·02 [0·65–1·60]; p=0·92). Interpretation: These results exclude all but a very modest increase in the risk of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage with antiplatelet therapy for patients on antithrombotic therapy for the prevention of occlusive vascular disease when they developed intracerebral haemorrhage.     IT for learning and teaching : where does the teacher fit in all of this?

    For at least two decades, the information technology (IT)-school link has dominated as one of the top issues in education. Many government authorities around the world believe that IT, thoughtfully integrated into the curriculum, will provide students with skills necessary to compete and survive in the 21st century. As for Hong Kong it is currently in the midst of education reform and thus the entire education community is facing the question of how to transform or reengineer our schools to bring about a holistic reform of the entire system of which the integration of IT into classroom settings is one element. In order to effect a paradigm shift it is important that our teachers appreciate the need for the shift and are receptive to the challenge of taking up their new role as a learning facilitator. It would mean a cultural change for teachers who are only familiar with the textbook-based approach of teaching and, for those who have had no exposure to computing so far, an IT literacy challenge altogether. Therefore active steps need to be taken to assist teachers to transit to the new mode of teaching to move them away from the traditional textbook-based approach to pedagogy so that diversified models of teaching which include elements of IT can be introduced into classrooms. Teachers need to be able to use IT as productivity tools, and act as facilitators of learning in order to facilitate the learning of their students. They need a keen awareness of the use of IT to support self-learning and co-operative and life-long learning. To bring about this change the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIED) has recently adopted a policy for Information Technology Competency in Education (ITCE). The Institute recognises the urgent need for our preservice education programs to explicitly emphasise integration of IT use in the subject content areas and within individual curriculum units. The study programme is now structured in such a way so as to enable students to use IT to support their curriculum most effectively throughout all modules. Through this systematic approach we sincerely hope that our students will go out into Hong Kong schools to be change agents for our next generation of students. We hope that information technology has the potential to drive new models of teaching and learning so that in the 21st century our students can effectively integrate information technology into a context of standards-based curriculum, constructivist pedagogy, and authentic assessment
