Bilinear R-parity violation with flavor symmetry
Bilinear R-parity violation (BRPV) provides the simplest intrinsically
supersymmetric neutrino mass generation scheme. While neutrino mixing
parameters can be probed in high energy accelerators, they are unfortunately
not predicted by the theory. Here we propose a model based on the discrete
flavor symmetry with a single R-parity violating parameter, leading to
(i) correct Cabbibo mixing given by the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin formula, and a
successful unification-like b-tau mass relation, and (ii) a correlation between
the lepton mixing angles and in agreement with
recent neutrino oscillation data, as well as a (nearly) massless neutrino,
leading to absence of neutrinoless double beta decay.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures. Extended version, as published in JHE
The cosmological evolution of quasar black-hole masses
Virial black-hole mass estimates are presented for 12698 quasars in the
redshift interval 0.1<z<2.1, based on modelling of spectra from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) first data release. The black-hole masses of the SDSS
quasars are found to lie between \simeq10^{7}\Msun and an upper limit of
\simeq 3\times 10^{9}\Msun, entirely consistent with the largest black-hole
masses found to date in the local Universe. The estimated Eddington ratios of
the broad-line quasars (FWHM\geq 2000 kms^{-1}) show a clear upper boundary at
, suggesting that the Eddington luminosity is still a
relevant physical limit to the accretion rate of luminous broad-line quasars at
. By combining the black-hole mass distribution of the SDSS quasars
with the 2dF quasar luminosity function, the number density of active black
holes at is estimated as a function of mass. In addition, we
independently estimate the local black-hole mass function for early-types using
the and correlations. Based on the SDSS
velocity dispersion function and the 2MASS band luminosity function, both
estimates are found to be consistent at the high-mass end (M_{bh}\geq
10^{8}\Msun). By comparing the estimated number density of active black holes
at with the local mass density of dormant black holes, we set lower
limits on the quasar lifetimes and find that the majority of black holes with
mass \geq 10^{8.5}\Msun are in place by .Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, revised version, accepted for publication by

Facilitating Stable Representations: Serial Dependence in Vision
We tested whether the intervening time between multiple glances influences the independence of the resulting visual percepts. Observers estimated how many dots were present in brief displays that repeated one, two, three, four, or a random number of trials later. Estimates made farther apart in time were more independent, and thus carried more information about the stimulus when combined. In addition, estimates from different visual field locations were more independent than estimates from the same location. Our results reveal a retinotopic serial dependence in visual numerosity estimates, which may be a mechanism for maintaining the continuity of visual perception in a noisy environment
Chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH): a novel alternative in screening archival breast cancer tissue samples for HER-2/neu status
BACKGROUND: Chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) is emerging as a practical, cost-effective, and valid alternative to fluorescent in situ hybridization in testing for gene alteration, especially in centers primarily working with immunohistochemistry (IHC). METHODS: We assessed Her-2/neu alteration using CISH on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded primary invasive ductal carcinoma tumors in which IHC (CB11 antibody) had previously been performed, and we compared the results with IHC. The 160 selected cases were equally stratified randomly into the four IHC categories (scores of 0, 1+, 2+, and 3+). We also compared age at diagnosis and tumor histologic grade with IHC and CISH Her-2/neu. RESULTS: We were able to perform and evaluate CISH successfully on all cases. The agreement between 3+ IHC and CISH-amplified cases as well as between all IHC and CISH Her-2/neu negative cases was 100%, and the concordance on all positive cases was 72.50%, with an overall agreement of 86.25%. All the discordant cases had 2+ IHC scores. Although we noted Her-2/neu positivity more in premenopausal women, the age at diagnosis was not significantly associated with IHC or CISH results. Similarly, although the small group of well-differentiated tumors was apparently Her-2/neu negative in both tests, no significant association was noted between any tumor histologic grade and either IHC or CISH results. CONCLUSIONS: CISH is easily integrated into routine testing in our laboratory. It is a necessary adjunct in determining the subset of non-amplified IHC-positive invasive tumors that will not benefit from trastuzumab therapy. Those cases with 2+ IHC results will be triaged and subjected to CISH. Her-2/neu testing should be done on all breast cancer cases regardless of age at presentation and tumor histologic grade

Recent Improvements in the SLC Positron System Performance
The positron system is very specific to the SLC in that the positrons are accelerated in the same linac as the electrons that produce them and the electrons with which they collide. Some of the difficulties in tuning this system to peak performance are thus unlikely to be encountered in future linear colliders, but many of the lessons learned in beam matching are useful for future machines. The design and commissioning of this system has been previously reported so we only briefly describe the major subsystems before detailing the tuning and diagnostics involved in optimizing the performance of the overall system

Measuring the quality and quantity of professional intrapartum support: Testing a computerised systematic observation tool in the clinical setting
Background: Continuous support in labour has a significant impact on a range of clinical outcomes, though whether the quality and quantity of support behaviours affects the strength of this impact has not yet been established. To identify the quality and quantity of support, a reliable means of measurement is needed. To this end, a new computerised systematic observation tool, the ‘SMILI' (Supportive Midwifery in Labour Instrument) was developed. The aim of the study was to test the validity and usability of the ‘Supportive Midwifery in Labour Instrument' (SMILI) and to test the feasibility and acceptability of the systematic observation approach in the clinical intrapartum setting. Methods: Systematic observation was combined with a postnatal questionnaire and the collection of data about clinical processes and outcomes for each observed labour. The setting for the study was four National Health Service maternity units in Scotland, UK. Participants in this study were forty five midwives and forty four women. The SMILI was used by trained midwife observers to record labour care provided by midwives. Observations were undertaken for an average of two hours and seventeen minutes during the active first stage of labour and, in 18 cases, the observation included the second stage of labour. Content validity of the instrument was tested by the observers, noting the extent to which the SMILI facilitated the recording of all key aspects of labour care and interactions. Construct validity was tested through exploration of correlations between the data recorded and women's feelings about the support they received. Feasibility and usability data were recorded following each observation by the observer. Internal reliability and construct validity were tested through statistical analysis of the data. Results: One hundred and four hours of labour care were observed and recorded using the SMILI during forty nine labour episodes. Conclusion: The SMILI was found to be a valid and reliable instrument in the intrapartum setting in which it was tested. The study identified that the SMILI could be used to test correlations between the quantity and quality of support and outcomes. The systematic observational approach was found to be an acceptable and feasible method of enquiry
cAMP-Signalling Regulates Gametocyte-Infected Erythrocyte Deformability Required for Malaria Parasite Transmission.
Blocking Plasmodium falciparum transmission to mosquitoes has been designated a strategic objective in the global agenda of malaria elimination. Transmission is ensured by gametocyte-infected erythrocytes (GIE) that sequester in the bone marrow and at maturation are released into peripheral blood from where they are taken up during a mosquito blood meal. Release into the blood circulation is accompanied by an increase in GIE deformability that allows them to pass through the spleen. Here, we used a microsphere matrix to mimic splenic filtration and investigated the role of cAMP-signalling in regulating GIE deformability. We demonstrated that mature GIE deformability is dependent on reduced cAMP-signalling and on increased phosphodiesterase expression in stage V gametocytes, and that parasite cAMP-dependent kinase activity contributes to the stiffness of immature gametocytes. Importantly, pharmacological agents that raise cAMP levels in transmissible stage V gametocytes render them less deformable and hence less likely to circulate through the spleen. Therefore, phosphodiesterase inhibitors that raise cAMP levels in P. falciparum infected erythrocytes, such as sildenafil, represent new candidate drugs to block transmission of malaria parasites
