Nabokov’s telephone. Phoning into existence

The telephone in contemporary “Western” literature may be said to have acquired a certain metafictional relevance after the late-modern and postmodern art forms. One example of this interpretative approach can be found in the works of Vladimir Nabokov’s, where recurrent patterns can be perceived through the metafictional symbolism of the telephone. The aim of this essay is the analysis of the telephone in the Nabokovian literary world inside that symbolic status of a metafictional and metaphysical device. The symbolical telephone can be read in terms of the existentialist Angst for a disabled communication in a literary space where the boundaries between reality and fiction are blurred. El teléfono en la literatura contemporánea “occidental” ha adquirido una cierta relevancia metafictional tras los períodos tarde-modernista y postmodernista. Como ejemplo de esta interpretación cabe mencionar las obras de Vladimir Nabokov, donde se pueden encontrar modelos recurrentes a través del simbolismo metafictional del teléfono. El objetivo de este ensayo es el análisis del teléfono en el mundo literario nabokoviano considerándolo dentro de ese estado simbólico de aparato metafictional y metafísico. Subjective and Objective Relative Clauses in Warao

Warao is a basically O-initial, solidly V-final language, which does not case-mark nominal constituents (Romero-Figueroa 1985a, 1985b)* As a result of such typological characteristics, this language offers complex syntactic constructions very difficult to process. However, Warao has developed mechanisms intended for alleviating the burden in message encoding and decoding tasks. Its relative clauses provide an example of sophisticated, yet clear-cut, disambiguating operations. They involve a network of morphophonological and syntactic clues that leads to unequivocal semantic interpretations, and that allows the speaker of the language to know which particular language item is taking part in relativization within any string of discourse. Part of this paper is devoted to the description and explanation of these phenomena. Further, the strategy of relativization used by the language, and the noun phrase accessibility to relative clause formation are discussed. Finally, a brief analysis of free relative nouns (or relative clause-based nominalizations), constructions that seem peculiar to this language, is presented

First report of Leptosphaeria biglobosa ‘brassicae’ as causal agent of phoma leaf spot in Brassica napus (Canola) in Argentina

Canola(Brassicanapus L.) is the second largest oilseed crop in the worldproviding 13% of the world´s oil supply. This crop has been grown in Argentinasince the 1930s, and the area devoted to its cultivation varies every year,reaching a maximum of 95000 Ha in the 2012/2013 growing season. Because of theoccurrence of optimal weather conditions and soils with high fertility, theaverage yield in this region is about 2000 kg/Ha. Phoma leaf spot and Phomastem canker are considered the most important and devastating diseases in Brassica napus andother Brassicaespecies [1]. In both cases, the causal agent is a complexof two closely related fungal species, Leptosphaeria maculans and L. biglobosa. In Argentina,the presence of L. maculans incanola plants was reported for the first time in 2004 [2], but the existence ofL.biglobosa has not been recorded so far. During the 2015/2016season, we collected several samples with typical Phoma leaf spot symptoms fromcanola plants growing in fields from the north and northeastern regions of the Buenos Aires province.The necrotic lesions were circular to irregularly oval, 8 to 15 mm in diameter,pale brown in the center, grayish green at the margin and characterized withthe presence of pycnidia. Several leaf pieces with lesions were rinsed twicewith deionized sterile water and placed in a humid chamber (90 mm diameterPetri dish with a layer of filter paper soaked in deionized sterile water) during2-3 days to induce the pycnidia to exude cirri of conidia. After this period,one cirrus per sample was transferred onto PDA plates supplemented withantibiotics (15 mg/L streptomycin, 15 mg/L gentamicin and 12 mg/L tetracycline)using an inoculation needle under stereoscopic microscope. Thus, severalisolates were obtained, some of them showing rapid mycelial growth rate andpigment production on PDA medium, as showed by the isolate Tapidor of L. biglobosa thatwe used as control (kindly provided by Professor Bruce Fitt, University ofHertfordshire-UK). In order to confirm the identity of these isolates, a PCRassay using genomic DNA as template was performed to distinguish L. maculans from L. biglobosa withthe species-specific primers LmacR, LmacF,and LbigF ina three-primers strategy described by Gaetan (2005)[3]. These reactions gave a444-bp amplicon as expected for L. biglobosa ´brassicae´.In addition, these results were confirmed by sequencing the nuclear ribosomalinternal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, which showed a 99% of identity withthe sequence of L. biglobosa ´brassicae´at the GenBank database (FO905468). L. biglobosa isolateswere then tested for pathogenicity on the canola cultivars Westar and Bioaureo2286 (Nuseed). With this purpose, cotyledons of 10-day-old seedlings werepricked with a needle, and each wound inoculated with 10 μl ofa conidial suspension (107 42conidia/ml). Sterilized distilled water was used as control. Developing primaryleaves were removed every 2-3 days in order to ensure that cotyledons continueto expand. Fourteen days after inoculation, irregular and brown necroticlesions were visible at the site of inoculation. These cotyledons were detachedand placed in a humid chamber to induce pycnidia formation. After three dayscirri of conidia were transferred to a plate with PDA supplemented with antibioticsas mentioned above. The identity of these isolates of L. biglobosa wereconfirmed by pigment production on PDA medium and by PCR assay usingspecies-specific primers. To our knowledge, this is the first report of L. biglobosa ´brassicae´as a pathogen of canola in Argentina. This finding shows that in Argentina´scanola cropping areas not 50 only L. maculans but alsoL.biglobosa are the causal agents of Phoma leaf spot disease.Fil: Rossi, Franco Rubén. Documentación y verificación del análisis de fibra cruda por medio del equipo Fibrebag FBS-6 para el Laboratorio de Análisis de Aguas y Alimentos de la Universidad Tecnológica De Pereira

El método FibreBag se identificado como uno de los métodos más sobresalientes en la determinación de fibra bruta, al proporcionar resultados más prácticos y eficientes, requeridos en laboratorios con análisis de rutina. Con la finalidad de dar soporte y calidad en los resultados entregados, El laboratorio de Análisis de Aguas y Alimentos de la Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira proporcionó la verificación del análisis de fibra bruta empleando el equipo FIBREBAG-FBS 6, identificando los atributos de calidad como límite de cuantificación 1,05 % y límite de detección 0,39 % y coeficiente de variación de 2,57 %, para el método FibreBag y 6,94 % para el método tradicional

Examining the Impact of Innovation Forms on Sustainable Economic Performance: The Influence of Family Management

The aim of this research is to explore the effect that innovation, as a potential source of sustained competitive advantage and firm growth, has on the achievement of sustainable economic performance. In particular, this paper empirically examines the influence of four innovation forms (intramural R&D, extramural R&D, product innovation, and process innovation) on firms’ sustainable economic performance, considering the moderating effect of family involvement in management. To test the hypotheses, random-effects regression analyses are applied to a longitudinal sample of 598 Spanish private manufacturing firms throughout the 2006–2015 period. The results show a negative effect of intramural and extramural R&D on sustainable economic performance and a positive effect of process innovation on sustainable economic performance. Moreover, a reinforced relationship between process innovation and sustainable economic performance is also revealed when family involvement in management acts as a moderator. The findings make several contributions to research and practice

La inclusión social y el encuentro comunitario en un espacio deportivo – Polideportivo Buenos Aires

Trabajo de GradoCiudadela Sucre se ubica en una de las periferias del municipio de Soacha, un sector que debido a una planificación inadecuada presenta varias problemáticas de marginalidad frente a la ciudad, como déficit de espacio público, deterioro en sus vías, poca cobertura en la red de equipamientos dotacional, educativos, deportivos y recreativos, adicional a la pendiente topográfica fuerte que se presenta. Por tal razón, este proyecto se enfoca en la búsqueda de la solución de algunas de las problemáticas sociales por medio de un equipamiento deportivo, relacionado directamente con el espacio público y su contexto. Un proyecto que en su desarrollo impulsará el crecimiento de la calidad de vida de los habitantes del sector, con la dotación de espacios deportivos y recreación para la inclusión social y el encuentro comunitario, gracias a sus estrategias diseño arquitectónico, urbano y constructivo propias del ejercicio de la arquitectura.1.
