    MEMORIAS | electronic literature + live coding performance

    Memorias is a web-based artistic project by Jessica Rodríguez developed through the Estuary platform —an online platform to host live coding languages. It is based in six autobiographical writings connected to the way she “hears”, “writes”, “watches”, “reads”, “sees” and “listens” to the word. Through these texts, six code works were designed and programmed, hybridizing natural and computing languages by parsing three existing live coding languages: Tidal Cycles, Punctual, and CineCer0. Together, Memorias’ languages collide different materialities as well as visual and sonic approaches, going from voices in English, Spanish, Cello and Paetzold samples, audio and visual synthesis, and pre-recorded video clips. This project explores how speech and literature — in its written form— can be used as interfaces that allow the performer to communicate both, with the computer and the audience. Additionally, speech —in its sonic form— is moved through space and time, expanding the possibilities of spoken literature by producing unlimited variations of the “original” autobiographical writings. Within the space/time of the piece, the audience can experience different ways, textures and logics to approach visual and sound through the use of language as a memory trigger.     Least action description of dynamic pairing correlations in the fission of Curium and Californium isotopes based on the Gogny energy density functional

    The impact of dynamic pairing correlations and their interplay with Coulomb antipairing effects on the systematic of the spontaneous fission half-lives for the nuclei 240−250^{240-250}Cm and 240−250^{240-250}Cf is analyzed, using a hierarchy of approximations based on the parametrization D1M of the Gogny energy density functional (EDF). First, the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation is used to compute deformed mean-field configurations, zero-point quantum corrections and collective inertias either by using the Slater approximation to Coulomb exchange and neglecting Coulomb antipairing or by fully considering the exchange and pairing channels of the Coulomb interaction. Next, the properties of the {\it{least action}} and {\it{least energy}} fission paths are compared. In the {\it{least action}} case, pairing is identified as the relevant degree of freedom in order to minimize the action entering the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation to the tunneling probability through the fission barrier. Irrespective of the treatment of Coulomb exchange and antipairing, it is shown that the {\it{least action}} path obtained taking into account the pairing degree of freedom leads to stronger pairing correlations that significantly reduce the spontaneous fission half-lives tSFt_{SF} improving thereby the comparison with the experiment by several orders of magnitude. It is also shown that the Coulomb antipairing effect is, to a large extent, washed out by the {\it{least action}} procedure and therefore the tSFt_{SF} values obtained by the two different treatments of the Coulomb exchange and pairing are of similar quality.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

    Symmetry-projected wave functions in quantum Monte Carlo calculations

    We consider symmetry-projected Hartree-Fock trial wave functions in constrained-path Monte Carlo (CPMC) calculations. Previous CPMC calculations have mostly employed Hartree-Fock (HF) trial wave functions, restricted or unrestricted. The symmetry-projected HF approach results in a hierarchy of wave functions with increasing quality: the more symmetries that are broken and restored in a self-consistent manner, the higher the quality of the trial wave function. This hierarchy is approximately maintained in CPMC calculations: the accuracy in the energy increases and the statistical variance decreases when further symmetries are broken and restored. Significant improvement is achieved in CPMC with the best symmetry-projected trial wave functions over those from simple HF. We analyze and quantify the behavior using the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model as an example. In the sign-problem-free region, where CPMC can be made exact but a constraint is deliberately imposed here, spin-projected wave functions remove the constraint bias. Away from half filling, spatial symmetry restoration in addition to that of the spin leads to highly accurate results from CPMC. Since the computational cost of symmetry-projected HF trial wave functions in CPMC can be made to scale algebraically with system size, this provides a potentially general approach for accurate calculations in many-fermion systems

    Exactly solvable pairing Hamiltonian for heavy nuclei

    We present a new exactly solvable Hamiltonian with a separable pairing interaction and non-degenerate single-particle energies. It is derived from the hyperbolic family of Richardson-Gaudin models and possesses two free parameters, one related to an interaction cutoff and the other to the pairing strength. These two parameters can be adjusted to give an excellent reproduction of Gogny self-consistent mean-field calculations in the canonical basis.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Describe the average age of sexual life onset from young people and adolescents, the prevalence of contraceptive methods and explore determinants of pregnancy. A retrospective cohort (2014-2018) was followed by a health insurer of the subsidized regime in Colombia. The study sample consisted of 35,214 young people aged 10-24 years living in 21 municipalities of the Colombian Caribbean region. For the social determinants of pregnancy, a multivariate probit model was estimated using as explanatory variables, housing area, education, family functionality and sexual behavior. 10.3% of women and 14.1% of men had their first sexual encounter before age 14 and 43.5% of women and 37.4% of men began their sex life after age 17. From the young people who claimed to have started their sexual life, 70.9% of the men made use of the condom as a contraceptive method, while the women divided on average 27.2% for the pills and / or injections followed by 16 , 1% in the use of the subdermal implant. As determinants of pregnancy in young people under 20, it was found that variables such as suspending school years [Yes (β = 0.6, p = 0.006)], being planned with hormonal method [Yes (β = 0.5, p = 0.000)] or start sexual life [Between 10 to 14 years (β = 0.14, p = 0.000)], increase the likelihood of young women becoming pregnant at some time in their life. These results also showed that the schooling of the young [University (β = -0.4, p = 0.038)] and always use condoms in sexual intercourse [Yes (β = -0.5, p = 0.042)] help prevent the pregnancy event from occurring. The age of sexual onset establishes a basis on which decision makers should intervene for promote a safe sex life, from use of anticonceptives in young people and thus avoiding unplanned pregnancy

    Systematic study of deformed nuclei at the drip lines and beyond

    An improved prescription for choosing a transformed harmonic oscillator (THO) basis for use in configuration-space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations is presented. The new HFB+THO framework that follows accurately reproduces the results of coordinate-space HFB calculations for spherical nuclei, including those that are weakly bound. Furthermore, it is fully automated, facilitating its use in systematic investigations of large sets of nuclei throughout the periodic table. As a first application, we have carried out calculations using the Skyrme Force SLy4 and volume pairing, with exact particle number projection following application of the Lipkin-Nogami prescription. Calculations were performed for all even-even nuclei from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line having proton numbers Z=2,4,...,108 and neutron numbers N=2,4,...,188. We focus on nuclei near the neutron drip line and find that there exist numerous particle-bound even-even nuclei (i.e., nuclei with negative Fermi energies) that have at the same time negative two-neutron separation energies. This phenomenon, which was earlier noted for light nuclei, is attributed to bound shape isomers beyond the drip line.Comment: 12 ReVTeX4 pages, 6 EPS figures.     A 5LCHB Inverter for PV transformerless applications with reduced leakage ground current

    Transformerless inverters for photovoltaic systems are widely used as it features low cost, volume, and weight. Thus, in recent years, its study has been of great interest to the research community. In this paper a transformerless cascade multilevel inverter for photovoltaic applications with leakage ground current compensation capability is presented. The proposed solution involves a second-order LC output filter with a particular connection, which is referred to as the DC-link-tied LC output filter. This solution is aimed to deal with the leakage-ground current issue, regardless of the considered PWM strategy. The mathematical model of the system involving such a particular LC output passive filter configuration is presented, out of which, both the differential-mode and the common-mode models are obtained. These models are used to explain the leakage-ground current improvement of the proposed DC-link-tied LC output filter. This hardware solution is evaluated under different modulation schemes to contrast the converter output response and the leakage-ground current performance.
