    Determination of competencies in veterinary medicine within the socio-humanistic axis

    El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar las competencias y asignaturas correspondientes del eje socio humanístico dentro del nuevo plan de estudios de la Licenciatura de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia de la Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas. El nuevo plan de estudios, que contemplan dichas competencias del eje socio humanístico, surge ante la necesidad de la revisión periódica de los contenidos del programa de licenciatura, además de que es un indicador de los organismos acreditadores.  Para cumplir con el objetivo, se organizaron mesas de trabajo con los núcleos académicos básicos de docentes expertos en educación veterinaria de la unidad académica. Se estableció la metodología propia para lograr los concesos respectos de las competencias del eje socio humanístico. Para ello, se tuvo el apoyo de la información científica, de marcos referenciales tanto locales, nacionales e internacionales de las competencias del médico veterinario zootecnia con el enfoque humanístico hacia una sola salud. Dentro de las competencias socio humanísticas resultantes de los concesos sobresalen: eficientar los procesos administrativos en los servicios médico veterinarios, ser capaz de elaborar, gestionar y ejecutar proyectos de producción agropecuaria, aplicar modelos de desarrollo rural sostenible preservando el bienestar animal como eje fundamental, tener la capacidad de identificar la actividad empresarial inherente a los servicios medico veterinarios y de la producción pecuaria y tener la capacidad de  comunicación. Se concluyó que el perfil profesional del médico veterinario debe contener un buen porcentaje de competencias socio humanísticas las cuales están dentro de materias específicas y contempladas de manera transversal en los distintos ejes del plan de estudios.The objective of this work was to determine the competences and corresponding subjects of the socio-humanistic axis within the new curriculum of the Degree in Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas. The new curriculum, which contemplates these competences of the socio-humanistic axis, arises from the need for periodic review of the contents of the bachelor's degree program, in addition to being an indicator of the accrediting bodies. To meet the objective, working groups were organized with the basic academic nuclei of expert teachers in veterinary education of the academic unit. The own methodology was established to achieve the concessions regarding the competences of the socio-humanistic axis. To this end, we had the support of scientific information, both local, national and international reference frameworks of the competences of the veterinary doctor zootechnics with the humanistic approach towards a single health. Among the socio-humanistic competences resulting from the concessions stand out: making the administrative processes in the veterinary medical services more efficient, being able to elaborate, manage and execute agricultural production projects, applying sustainable rural development models preserving animal welfare as a fundamental axis, having the ability to identify the business activity inherent in veterinary medical services and livestock production and having communication skills. It was concluded that the professional profile of the veterinarian must contain a good percentage of socio-humanistic competences which are within specific subjects and contemplated in a transversal way in the different axes of the curriculum. &nbsp

    Tutor relationship in distance-learning secondary schools of Tlaltenango, Zacatecas

    The objective of this research was to know about tutor relationship in distance-learning secondary schools of Tlaltenango, Zacatecas, being the dialogue the center of school practice. It is qualitative research, with a phenomenological approach with participant observation, with analysis of interviews conducted with students and teachers promoting learning communities through semantic networks. The results showed that students choose tutors and subject of study, research out of interest, share what they learn; felt changes during their secondary level in skill development. Teachers saw a tool that generated changes within families, and emotions strengthened tolerance, humanize learning, and reduced stress. Both want the project to be expanded in the future and for parents to be involved in peer tutoring, which highlights the desire for teachers and students to change practice within their schools through tutoring networks.El objetivo de esta investigación fue conocer la relación tutora en telesecundarias multigrado de Tlaltenango, Zacatecas, siendo el diálogo el centro de la práctica escolar. Es una investigación cualitativa, de enfoque fenomenológico con observación participante, con análisis de entrevistas realizadas a alumnos y maestros promotores de comunidades de aprendizaje mediante redes semánticas. Los resultados mostraron que los alumnos eligen tutor y tema de estudio, investigan por interés, comparten lo que aprenden; sintieron cambios durante su nivel secundaria en el desarrollo de habilidades. Los docentes vieron una herramienta que generó cambios al interior de las familias, emociones que fortalecieron la tolerancia, se humanizan los aprendizajes y reducen estrés. Ambos desean que en un futuro se amplíe el proyecto y se involucren padres de familia en la tutoría entre pares, destaca el deseo de que docentes y alumnos cambien de práctica dentro de sus escuelas mediante redes de tutoría

    A needle in a haystack: A new metabarcoding approach to survey diversity at the species level of Arcellinida (Amoebozoa: Tubulinea)

    Environmental DNA-based diversity studies have increased in popularity with the development of high throughput sequencing technologies. This permits the potential simultaneous retrieval of vast amounts of molecular data from many different organisms and species, thus contributing to a wide range of biological disciplines. Environmental DNA protocols designed for protists often focused on the highly conserved small subunit of the ribosome gene, that does not permit species-level assignments. On the other hand, eDNA protocols aiming at species-level assignments allow a fine level ecological resolution and reproducible results. These protocols are currently applied to organisms living in marine and shallow lotic freshwater ecosystems, often in a bioindication purpose. Therefore, in this study, we present a species-level eDNA protocol designed to explore diversity of Arcellinida (Amoebozoa: Tubulinea) testate amoebae taxa that is based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI). These organisms are widespread in lentic water bodies and soil ecosystems. We applied this protocol to 42 samples from peatlands, estuaries and soil environments, recovering all the infraorders in Glutinoconcha (with COI data), except for Hyalospheniformes. Our results revealed an unsuspected diversity in morphologically homogeneous groups such as Cylindrothecina, Excentrostoma or Sphaerothecina. With this protocol we expect to revolutionize the design of modern distributional Arcellinida surveys. Our approach involves a rapid and cost-effective analysis of testate amoeba diversity living in contrasted ecosystems.     The Synoptic All-Sky Infrared (SASIR) Survey

    We are proposing to conduct a multicolor, synoptic infrared (IR) imaging survey of the Northern sky with a new, dedicated 6.5-meter telescope at San Pedro M\'artir (SPM) Observatory. This initiative is being developed in partnership with astronomy institutions in Mexico and the University of California. The 4-year, dedicated survey, planned to begin in 2017, will reach more than 100 times deeper than 2MASS. The Synoptic All-Sky Infrared (SASIR) Survey will reveal the missing sample of faint red dwarf stars in the local solar neighborhood, and the unprecedented sensitivity over such a wide field will result in the discovery of thousands of z ~ 7 quasars (and reaching to z > 10), allowing detailed study (in concert with JWST and Giant Segmented Mirror Telescopes) of the timing and the origin(s) of reionization. As a time-domain survey, SASIR will reveal the dynamic infrared universe, opening new phase space for discovery. Synoptic observations of over 10^6 supernovae and variable stars will provide better distance measures than optical studies alone. SASIR also provides significant synergy with other major Astro2010 facilities, improving the overall scientific return of community investments. Compared to optical-only measurements, IR colors vastly improve photometric redshifts to z ~ 4, enhancing dark energy and dark matter surveys based on weak lensing and baryon oscillations.     Role of age and comorbidities in mortality of patients with infective endocarditis

    [Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality. [Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years,and ≥ 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk. [Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared,the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality. [Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group

    Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

    The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.     El V Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad, CITIS 2019, realizado del 6 al 8 de febrero de 2019 y organizado por la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, ofreció a la comunidad académica nacional e internacional una plataforma de comunicación unificada, dirigida a cubrir los problemas teóricos y prácticos de mayor impacto en la sociedad moderna desde la ingeniería. En esta edición, dedicada a los 25 años de vida de la UPS, los ejes temáticos estuvieron relacionados con la aplicación de la ciencia, el desarrollo tecnológico y la innovación en cinco pilares fundamentales de nuestra sociedad: la industria, la movilidad, la sostenibilidad ambiental, la información y las telecomunicaciones. El comité científico estuvo conformado formado por 48 investigadores procedentes de diez países: España, Reino Unido, Italia, Bélgica, México, Venezuela, Colombia, Brasil, Estados Unidos y Ecuador. Fueron recibidas un centenar de contribuciones, de las cuales 39 fueron aprobadas en forma de ponencias y 15 en formato poster. Estas contribuciones fueron presentadas de forma oral ante toda la comunidad académica que se dio cita en el Congreso, quienes desde el aula magna, el auditorio y la sala de usos múltiples de la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, cumplieron respetuosamente la responsabilidad de representar a toda la sociedad en la revisión, aceptación y validación del conocimiento nuevo que fue presentado en cada exposición por los investigadores. Paralelo a las sesiones técnicas, el Congreso contó con espacios de presentación de posters científicos y cinco workshops en temáticas de vanguardia que cautivaron la atención de nuestros docentes y estudiantes.     Search for eccentric black hole coalescences during the third observing run of LIGO and Virgo

    Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass M&gt;70 M⊙) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities 0&lt;e≤0.3 at 0.33 Gpc−3 yr−1 at 90\% confidence level
