Here we report the highly enantio- and syn-selective synthesis of β-hydroxy α-amino acids from glycine imine derivatives under Brønsted base (BB) catalysis. The key of this approach is the use of benzophenone-derived imine of glycine o-nitroanilide as a pronucleophile, where the o-nitroanilide framework provides an efficient hydrogen-bonding platform that accounts for nucleophile reactivity and diastereoselectivity.Support has been provided by the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (UFI QOSYC 11/22), Basque Government (GV grant IT1236-19), and Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN, CTQ2016-78487-C2), Spain. Caracterización de tipologías de productores de plátano (Musa AAB) en los Llanos Orientales de Colombia

    Get PDF
The Llanos Orientales has traditionally been one of the most productive plantain regions. However, farmer´s classification has always been as small (1-5 ha), medium (6-15 ha) and big (> 15 ha) according to the planting area, without considering any other technical or economic criteria that would allow to differentiate plantain farmers in this area of the country. A economic, technical and social characterization of plantain producers in the departments of Meta, Casanare and Arauca was done based on a survey in the municipalities of Granada and Fuente de oro in Meta, Yopal and Pore in Casanare, Tame and Saravena in Arauca. The survey addressed all crop technical factors from soil preparation to post-harvest of plantain. Data analysis resulted in the following farmer´s typologies: 1. Producers with high productivity, technology and financial investment; 2. Producers with medium productivity, high technology and intermediate financial investment; 3. Producers with medium to low productivity, low technology and low financial investment and 4. Producers with low productivity, low technology and low financial investment. The results defined critical points for each typology and the facts to design work and research plans required to improve the production system for each type.

    Get PDF
Introduction: Osteoporosis is characterized by a low bone mineral density. Genetic composition is one of the most influential factors in determining bone mineral density (BMD). There are few studies on genes associated with BMD in the Mexican population. Objective: To investigate the association of eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of JAG1, MEF2C and BDNF genes with BMD in women of Northern México. Materials and methods: This study involved 124 unrelated Mexican women between 40 and 80 years old. BMD was determined by dual X-ray absorptiometry. Genotyping was performed using allelic discrimination by real time PCR. We analyzed the SNP of JAG1 (rs6514116, rs2273061, rs2235811 and rs6040061), MEF2C (rs1366594, rs12521522 and rs11951031), and BDNF (rs6265) and the data using linear regression. Results: The JAG1 SNP rs2235811 was associated with the BMD of the total body under the dominant inheritance model (p=0,024). Although the other SNPs were not associated with BMD in any of the inheritance models studied, a trend was observed. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the SNP rs2235811 in the JAG1 gene might contribute to the variation in BMD in women from northern México

ABSTRACT: This article reports the common uses of the Passiflora ligularis juss among the farm workers in the department of Huila and the preliminary results of its phytochemical composition. In the first phase of this investigation, an ethnobotany survey distributed among 42 families was consulted to create an inventory of the agricultural uses of the different parts of the plant. This information served as a starting point to select the basic qualitative analysis which allows the identification of biological activity of this species such as the phytochemical analysis, the bromatological analysis, and the mineral analysis. Twenty six common uses were discovered especially for medical and nutritional purposes. Some medicinal uses may be related to the qualitative presence of compositions found in the phytochemical analysis. The use of the grenade’s outer shell for animal nutrition was found to be justified based on the calories and fiber. This study highlights the finding that the pulp of the fruit is a source of magnesium for children younger than a year. Significant differences were found in the composition of the grenade’s pulp of three different areas due to agroecological conditions and the mineral nutrition that the plants receive.RESUMEN: Este artículo reporta los usos populares de la Passiflora ligularis juss entre los campesinos del departamento del Huila y los resultados preliminares sobre su composición fitoquímica.

ABSTRACT: We analyzed the functional and nutritional properties of six species of Passiflora (Passifloraceae) based on the uses reported by 74 farm families of ten municipalities of the Department of Huila in Colombia. The Ethnobotanical study allowed us to record 92 uses, most of which were medicinal, followed by the use of fruits for food. The phytochemical analysis of four species with the largest number of medicinal uses revealed the presence of phenolic compounds, triterpenes, steroids, and flavonoids, which would justify some of the uses reported by farmers. The nutritional analysis indicates that some of the fruits of Passiflora are high in Magnesium and Zinc, low in sodium, and have digestive properties.RESUMEN: Se analizan las propiedades funcionales y nutricionales de seis especies de Passiflora (Passifloraceae) a partir de los usos mencionados por 74 familias campesinas de 10 municipios del departamento del Huila en Colombia.

[ENG]Importance Strategies targeting body composition may help prevent chronic diseases in persons with excess weight, but randomized clinical trials evaluating lifestyle interventions have rarely reported effects on directly quantified body composition. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of a lifestyle weight-loss intervention on changes in overall and regional body composition. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS The ongoing Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea-Plus (PREDIMED-Plus) randomized clinical trial is designed to test the effect of the intervention on cardiovascular disease prevention after 8 years of follow-up. The trial is being conducted in 23 Spanish research centers and includes men and women (age 55-75 years) with body mass index between 27 and 40 and metabolic syndrome. The trial reported herein is an interim subgroup analysis of the intermediate outcome body composition after 3-year follow-up, and data analysis was conducted from February 1 to November 30, 2022. Of 6874 total PREDIMED-Plus participants, a subsample of 1521 individuals, coming from centers with access to a dual energy x-ray absorptiometry device, underwent body composition measurements at 3 time points. INTERVENTION Participants were randomly allocated to a multifactorial intervention based on an energy-reduced Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and increased physical activity (PA) or to a control group based on usual care, with advice to follow an ad libitum MedDiet, but no physical activity promotion. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The outcomes (continuous) were 3-year changes in total fat and lean mass (expressed as percentages of body mass) and visceral fat (in grams), tested using multivariable linear mixed-effects models. Clinical relevance of changes in body components (dichotomous) was assessed based on 5% or more improvements in baseline values, using logistic regression. Main analyses were performed in the evaluable population (completers only) and in sensitivity analyses, multiple imputation was performed to include data of participants lost to follow-up (intention-to-treat analyses). RESULTS A total of 1521 individuals were included (mean [SD] age, 65.3 [5.0] years; 52.1% men). In comparison with the control group (n=761), participants in the intervention arm (n=760) showed greater reductions in the percentage of total fat (between group differences after 1-year, −0.94% [95% CI, −1.19 to −0.69]; 3 years, −0.38% [95% CI, −0.64 to −0.12] and visceral fat storage after 1 year, -126 g [95% CI, −179 to −73.3 g]; 3 years, −70.4 g [95% CI, −126 to −15.2 g] and greater increases in the percentage of total lean mass at 1 year, 0.88% [95% CI, 0.63%-1.12%]; 3-years 0.34% [95%CI, 0.09%-0.60%]). The intervention group was more likely to show improvements of 5% or more in baseline body components (absolute risk reduction after 1 year, 13% for total fat mass, 11% for total lean mass, and 14% for visceral fat mass; after 3-years: 6% for total fat mass, 6% for total lean mass, and 8% for visceral fat mass). The number of participants needed to treat was between 12 and 17 to attain at least 1 individual with possibly clinically meaningful improvements in body composition. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The findings of this trial suggest a weight-loss lifestyle intervention based on an energy-reduced MedDiet and physical activity significantly reduced total and visceral fat and attenuated age-related losses of lean mass in older adults with overweight or obesity and metabolic syndrome. Continued follow-up is warranted to confirm the long-term consequences of these changes on cardiovascular clinical end points.S
