The Role of Flagship Firms, External Actors and Support Institutions in the Emergence of Successful Export Activities in Brazil: Two Industrial Cluster Studies
This paper examines the process by which firms in a cluster start to export based on systemic interactions and the process of diffusion of exporting as a business strategy within the cluster. Two Brazilian manufacturing industries are studied, and within each one a geographic cluster was identified as the origin of dynamic export growth. Players in each industrial cluster, as well as other significant players, were interviewed or identified using secondary sources, and extensive secondary data research was undertaken to study clusters’ historical development. Detailed analysis and a comparison of the two experiences made it possible to draw some general conclusions concerning the similarities and differences between the two clusters in terms of the adoption and diffusion of exporting.Cluster, Exports, Innovation, Brazil
Students’ perceptions of their experiences with online assessments during the Covid-19 pandemic
Abstract. Assessment is an essential element in teaching and learning, and the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic forced teachers and students to adapt this practice to the online modality. Yet, the existence of resources regarding online assessments is still limited. This study aims to explore how students perceived their experiences with online assessment during the pandemic, with a focus on their relationship with feedback, their emotions, and motivation. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 participants who were within their last four years of basic education in the year 2020, with subsequent content analysis being applied. The results of this study indicate that students did not perceive major changes in the assessment methods applied by teachers. They did, however, perceive new challenges for their learning to emerge, and consequently made adaptations to their studying habits. Moreover, it was revealed that students received less feedback in the online modality, which had an impact on their emotional states and learning practices. Additionally, it was found that the pandemic and online learning contexts imposed new difficulties for students, whose emotions were negatively impacted, and whose motivation toward assessment tasks was significantly decreased. These factors led students to behaviors such as avoiding studying and engaging in dishonest academic practices. In conclusion, this study sheds light on topics relevant to online learning, online assessments, and students’ emotions and motivation regarding assessment, specifically in the context of emergency online learning
Associativism in the context of migration
The Emergence of New and Successful Export Activities in Brazil: Four Case Studies from the Manufacturing and the Agricultural Sector
This paper investigates the emergence of new successful export activities in Brazil through the analysis of four industry case studies: furniture, swimwear, soybeans and grapes. Extensive secondary data research was done to study industries’ historical development and to understand the elements that affect the discovery of new export-oriented activities and their diffusion in the economy. Detailed analysis was carried out to identify the role of public sector in the discovery and diffusion process, if any. Comparison of the four experiences show different models of diffusion and demonstrate how barriers to discovery, spillovers and institutions responses varied dramatically among the cases. The paper tries to extract some general conclusions concerning the role of pioneer firms, external actors and public sector institutions. Some lessons learned are presented aiming to help policymakers to design positive policy interventions in Latin America countries.
Migrations Museums: A Journey Through the Itinerary of National History
In Portugal, migrations constitute a phenomenon that, due to its permanence and dimension, is one of the fundamental elements to comprehend the country’s social history. Because of its relevance, it becomes indispensable to consider it not only in a demographic but also economic framework, as well as the cultural changes it introduces. It is crucial to consider the time and the space as determinant variables of the migratory route. A diachronic perspective enables the articulation between national and international conjunctures, which are necessarily associated and produce different configurations in each epoch. The alterations that occur in the meantime aren’t always immediately detected and only a retrospective look consents the understanding of many of the situations responsible for mobility. The title, which refers to migrations in a museological perspective, implies the consideration of various aspects (even if succinctly), which are specific of each and every theme and the way they interrelate. Their treatment in a museum space enables the transmission of essential knowledge to a wider audience.
Automation of companies’ recruitment process: development of an algorithm capable of ranking CVs according to job offers
Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Informatics EngineeringThis document presents a Thesis and describes the underlying work which was developed
along the second year of the Master Degree in Informatics Engineering offered by Departamento
de Informática of Universidade do Minho and accomplished at Syone SBS Software –
Tecnologia e Serviços de Informática, S.A..
In the past few years, some attempts to automatically screening CVs with resource to
Natural Language Processing have been made not only to save recruiters’ time, but also
to spare them the most tedious task of the recruitment process and, consequently, smooth
their job. However, the majority is still very primitive, misclassifies a lot of CVs and needs a
deeper study.
Therefore, the aim of this Master’s Project is precisely to develop an algorithm that is
capable of automatically ranking candidates’ CVs according to their similarity regarding the
job offer they applied for.
Thus, a general architecture was proposed where CVs and job offers are preprocessed, in
order to obtain the respective texts proper to be further processed. That said, two different
approaches were followed, in order to find the similarity between the documents in question.
To do so, the first approach resorted to several Machine Learning algorithms and similarity
measures, while the second approach structured the initial documents to compare their
respective information.
After that, tests were conducted to evaluate both approaches and enable the comparison
between them. Finally, the conclusions were drawn and also reported in this dissertation.
Contudo, a maioria ainda é

Nir spectroscopy for non-destructive quality evaluation of fish
Fish freshness is regarded as one major parameter for seafood quality. However, it is
lost inevitably in practice after catching and fish death, owing to the natural autolysis process
which, in turn, trigger the growth of microorganisms and, consequently, the progressive loss of
food characteristics and quality. This phenomenon is perceptible by changes in the sensory
characteristics such as appearance, odour, taste and texture of fresh fish as well as in chemical,
biochemical and microbiological changes.
Fish market prices is highly depended on accurately predict its freshness and shelf-life.
Predicted storage time in ice is defined as the number of days that the fish has been stored in
ice and it is possible to use these results to estimate the remaining shelf life. Quality Index
Method (QIM) is currently the most wholesome and straightforward method of describing
freshness. However, it is time consuming and subjective and it is not always suitable for largescale
applications.
NIR spectroscopy has been proven to be a rapidly and non-destructive method for
evaluating fish components (moisture, protein, fat, …) as well as it has shown good predictions
errors associated with fish storage time prediction. The purpose of this research is to test the
possibility of using NIR spectroscopy for non-destructively predicting freshness levels of plaice
fish in Flanders, Belgium.
In the preliminary study, spectroscopic measurements were performed on tested plaice
samples (n=10) subjected to different storage times assisted with Partial Least Squares
Discriminant Analysis (PLSDA) indicated that NIR spectroscopy had great potential for nondestructive
plaice freshness discrimination. In the next step, the main study employing NIR
diffuse reflectance measurements for plaice samples (n=90) graded using commercial QIM
scoring method at ILVO (Flanders, Belgium) together with Partial Least Squares (PLS)
regression culminated on two different calibration models for predicting freshness expressed as
storage days in ice (converted from the graded QIM scores): one for dark skin measurements
with prediction performances of 1.82, 2.22 and 0.804 for RMSECV, RMSEP and R2p,
respectively, using the selected wavelength range of 1400 to 1580 nm; and one for white skin
measurements with those parameters of 2.356, 2.59 and 0.677 for RMSECV, RMSEP and R2p,
respectively, using the full wavelength range studied of 940 to 1700 nm.A frescura do peixe é considerada um dos parâmetros mais importantes na
Chinese community in Portugal: history, migration, and business
This text explores the presence of the Chinese community in Portugal,
considering its specific characteristics and its evolution. Moreover, the individuality
of this community motivated our interest in pursuing a research project, centred on
the business community group established in this country. This study led to a
transnational vision of the networks that interact in this field. The diversity of the
migratory flows involved and the economic dimension prevailing throughout the
entire Chinese diaspora compelled the analysis of their relationship in terms of
European networks and the institutional link maintained with China itself.
comunidade empresarial estabelecida no nosso país.

The main purpose of this paper is to identify a stable money demand function for Angola. Using monthly data from 2012:01 until 2019:01, we run a Vector Error Correction model, for the long-run relationships experimenting with different monetary aggregates. Then, an Auto Regressive Distributed Lag model is used to access the forecasting power of the corresponding excess liquidities regarding the inflation rate. The results indicate that there is currency substitution in Angola, but instability of money demand can be overcome by using broader monetary aggregates that include foreign currency deposits.O objetivo principal deste estudo é identificar uma função procura de moeda estável para Angola e comparar o poder de previsão de diferentes agregados monetários relativamente à inflação.
A new limit for the NW Río de la Plata Craton Border at about 24°S (Argentina) detected by Magnetotellurics
Old South American structures constitute a puzzle where the Río de la Plata Craton is the most important clue in the assembly of SW Gondwana. The present study is aimed at characterizing the western border of the Río de la Plata Craton on the basis of magnetotelluric studies. Magnetotelluric (MT) data were acquired along an approximately NW-SE 750km profile at about 24ºS, from the Sub-Andean Ranges in the province of Salta (NW) to the Formosa Province frontier (SE) next to Paraguay River. Distortion and structure dimensionality analysis indicates that MT responses are two-dimensional with a NS strike orientation, consistent with the regional geological strike. A 2-D inversion of the data provided a model showing a lateral discontinuity, possibly associated with cratonic structures. The high resistivity observed (>5000ohm·m), from about the middle of the profile toward its eastern end, may be interpreted as the terranes accreted to the Río de la Plata Craton during Neoproterozoic to Cambrian times, or as the Río de la Plata Craton itself. Along the profile from the surface to a depth of about 10km the resistivity model shows a significant resistivity variation in the structure. The resistive block identified at the western end of the profile represents the Sub-Andean system. The markedly enhanced low-resistivity structure (~1 to 10ohm·m) corresponds to a sedimentary pile whose thickness decreases from NW to SE.Fil: Favetto, Alicia Beatriz.
