Generation of analytic semi-groups in L-2 for a class of second order degenerate elliptic operators
We study the generation of analytic semigroups in the L-2 topology by second order elliptic operators in divergence form, that may degenerate at the boundary of the space domain. Our results, that hold in two space dimensions, guarantee that the solutions of the corresponding evolution problems support integration by parts. So, this paper provides the basis for deriving Carleman type estimates for degenerate parabolic operators

A flexible ratio regression approach for zero-truncated capture–recapture counts
Capture–recapture methods are used to estimate the size of a population of interest which is only partially observed. In such studies, each member of the population carries a count of the number of times it has been identified during the observational period. In real-life applications, only positive counts are recorded, and we get a truncated at zero-observed distribution. We need to use the truncated count distribution to estimate the number of unobserved units. We consider ratios of neighboring count probabilities, estimated by ratios of observed frequencies, regardless of whether we have a zero-truncated or an untruncated distribution. Rocchetti et al. (2011) have shown that, for densities in the Katz family, these ratios can be modeled by a regression approach, and Rocchetti et al. (2014) have specialized the approach to the beta-binomial distribution. Once the regression model has been estimated, the unobserved frequency of zero counts can be simply derived. The guiding principle is that it is often easier to find an appropriate regression model than a proper model for the count distribution. However, a full analysis of the connection between the regression model and the associated count distribution has been missing. In this manuscript, we fill the gap and show that the regression model approach leads, under general conditions, to a valid count distribution; we also consider a wider class of regression models, based on fractional polynomials. The proposed approach is illustrated by analyzing various empirical applications, and by means of a simulation study
New general synthesis of alpha-alkoxyketones via alpha'-alkylation, alpha-alkylation and alpha,alpha'-dialkylation of alpha-alkoxyketimines
alpha-Methoxy- and alpha-ethoxyketones, as important intermediates in organic synthesis and flavor compounds in food chemistry, were synthesized by deprotonation of N-(1-alkoxy-2-propylidene)isopropylamine, prepared by condensation of the corresponding alpha-alkoxyacetone with isopropylamine, and subsequent reaction of the corresponding 1-azaallylic anions with alkyl halides to afford alpha'-alkylated, alpha-alkylated and alpha,alpha'-dialkylated ketimines. Hydrolysis of the imino function led to the desired substituted alpha-alkoxyketones. The ratio of alpha-, alpha'-, and alpha,alpha'-(di)alkylated compounds depended on the amount of base used and on the nature of the alkylating reagent
Unusual association of NDM-1 with KPC-2 and armA among Brazilian Enterobacteriaceae isolates
We report the microbiological characterization of four New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 (bla(NDM-1))-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. bla(NDM-1) was located on a conjugative plasmid and was associated with Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-2 (bla(KPC-2)) or aminoglycoside-resistance methylase ( armA), a 16S rRNA methylase not previously reported in Brazil, in two distinct strains of Enterobacter cloacae. Our results suggested that the introduction of bla(NDM-1) in Brazil has been accompanied by rapid spread, since our isolates showed no genetic relationship.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Med, Lab Especial Microbiol Clin, São Paulo, SP, BrazilDASA, Lab Diagnost Amer, São Paulo, SP, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Med, Lab Especial Microbiol Clin, São Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc
