This is the peer reviewed version of the following article: López‐López, E., Pardo, X.M., Regueiro, C.V., Iglesias, R. and Casado, F.E. (2019), Dataset bias exposed in face verification. IET Biom., 8: 249-258, which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1049/iet-bmt.2018.5224. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Use of Self-Archived VersionsMost facial verification methods assume that training and testing sets contain independent and identically distributed samples, although, in many real applications, this assumption does not hold. Whenever gathering a representative dataset in the target domain is unfeasible, it is necessary to choose one of the already available (source domain) datasets. Here, a study was performed over the differences among six public datasets, and how this impacts on the performance of the learned methods. In the considered scenario of mobile devices, the individual of interest is enrolled using a few facial images taken in the operational domain, while training impostors are drawn from one of the public available datasets. This work tried to shed light on the inherent differences among the datasets, and potential harms that should be considered when they are combined for training and testing. Results indicate that a drop in performance occurs whenever training and testing are done on different datasets compared to the case of using the same dataset in both phases. However, the decay strongly depends on the kind of features. Besides, the representation of samples in the feature space reveals insights into what extent bias is an endogenous or an exogenous factorThis work has received financial support from the Xunta de Galicia, Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Ordenación Universitaria (Accreditation 2016–2019, EDG431G/01 and ED431G/08, and reference competitive group 2014–2017, GRC2014/030), the European Union: European Social Fund (ESF), European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and FEDER funds and (AEI/FEDER, UE) grant number TIN2017‐90135‐R. Application of miRNA-seq in neuropsychiatry: A methodological perspective

    Get PDF
MiRNAs are emerging as key molecules to study neuropsychiatric diseases. However, despite the large number of methodologies and software for miRNA-seq analyses, there is little supporting literature for researchers in this area. This review focuses on evaluating how miRNA-seq has been used to study neuropsychiatric diseases to date, analyzing both the main findings discovered and the bioinformatics workflows and tools used from a methodological perspective. The objective of this review is two-fold: first, to evaluate current miRNA-seq procedures used in neuropsychiatry; and second, to offer comprehensive information that can serve as a guide to new researchers in bioinformatics. After conducting a systematic search (from 2016 to June 30, 2020) of articles using miRNA-seq in neuropsychiatry, we have seen that it has already been used for different types of studies in three main categories: diagnosis, prognosis, and mechanism. We carefully analyzed the bioinformatics workflows of each study, observing a high degree of variability with respect to the tools and methods used and several methodological complexities that are identified and discussed in this reviewInstituto de Salud Carlos III | Ref. Laboratory and telescope demonstration of the TP3-WFS for the adaptive optics segment of AOLI

AOLI (Adaptive Optics Lucky Imager) is a state-of-art instrument that combines adaptive optics (AO) and lucky imaging (LI) with the objective of obtaining diffraction limited images in visible wavelength at mid- and big-size ground-based telescopes. The key innovation of AOLI is the development and use of the new TP3-WFS (Two Pupil Plane PositionsWavefront Sensor). The TP3-WFS, working in visible band, represents an advance over classical wavefront sensors such as the Shack-Hartmann WFS (SH-WFS) because it can theoretically use fainter natural reference stars, which would ultimately provide better sky coverages to AO instruments using this newer sensor. This paper describes the software, algorithms and procedures that enabled AOLI to become the first astronomical instrument performing real-time adaptive optics corrections in a telescope with this new type of WFS, including the first control-related results at the William Herschel Telescope (WHT)This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy under the projects AYA2011-29024, ESP2014-56869-C2-2-P, ESP2015-69020-C2-2-R and DPI2015-66458-C2-2-R, by project 15345/PI/10 from the Fundación Séneca, by the Spanish Ministry of Education under the grant FPU12/05573, by project ST/K002368/1 from the Science and Technology Facilities Council and by ERDF funds from the European Commission.
