    Double-nucleus elliptical MCG-01-12-005 in an X-ray emitting cluster of galaxies

    The scenario of galaxy formation is believed to follow a structure that builds up from the bottom, with large galaxies being formed by several merging episodes of smaller ones. In this scenario a number of galaxies can be expected to be seen in the merging phase, with their external regions already mixed, while their nuclei, with stronger self-gravitation, are still recognizable as such. During a photometric monitoring of AGNs in the field of a long-exposure INTEGRAL pointing, we serendipitously found an elliptical galaxy in the center of the X-ray cluster (EXO 0422-086) with two nuclei. We performed surface photometry on our images and those of the SDSS archive and obtained slit spectra of both nuclei. Aperture photometry of the two stellar-like nuclei showed very similar colors in the SDSS image and in our Johnson BVRI images, which is typical of an elliptical galaxy nucleus. The spectra of the nuclei showed the typical absorption lines of an elliptical galaxy without appreciable emission lines. The redshifts derived from each nucleus were equal and fully consistent with the literature value (0.0397). We can therefore exclude the possibility that one of the nuclei is a foreground star or a background AGN and consider this elliptical galaxy as a bona fide example of a galaxy merger.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     Assessment of cardiovascular regulation through irreversibility analysis of heart period variability: a 24 hours Holter study in healthy and chronic heart failure populations

    We propose an approach based on time reversibility analysis to characterize the cardiovascular regulation and its nonlinearities as derived from 24 hours Holter recordings of heart period variability in a healthy population (n=12, age: median=43 years, range=34–55 years) and in a pathological group of age-matched chronic heart failure (CHF) patients (n=13, primarily in NYHA class II, age: median=37 years, range=33–56 years, ejection fraction: median=25%, range=13–30%). Two indices capable of detecting nonlinear irreversible dynamics according to different strategies of phase-space reconstruction (i.e. a fixed two-dimensional phase-space reconstruction and an optimal selection of the embedding dimension, respectively) are tested and compared with a more traditional nonlinear index based on local nonlinear prediction. Results showed that nonlinear dynamics owing to time irreversibility at short time scales are significantly present during daytime in healthy subjects, more frequently present in the CHF population and less frequently during night-time in both groups, thus suggesting their link with a dominant sympathetic regulation and/or with a vagal withdrawal. On the contrary, nonlinear dynamics owing to time irreversibility at longer, dominant time scales were insignificantly present in both groups. During daytime in the healthy population, irreversibility was mostly due to the presence of asymmetric patterns characterized by bradycardic runs shorter than tachycardic ones. Nonlinear dynamics produced by mechanisms different from those inducing temporal irreversibility were significantly detectable in both groups and more frequently during night-time. The present study proposes a method to distinguish different types of nonlinearities and assess their contribution over different temporal scales. Results confirm the usefulness of this method even when applied in uncontrolled experimental conditions such as those during 24 hours Holter recordings

    Human Dental Pulp Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Soluble Factors Combined with a Nanostructured Scaffold Support theGeneratio of a Vascular Network In Vivo

    Among all strategies directed at developing new tools to support re-vascularization of damaged tissues, the use of pro-angiogenic soluble factors, derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), appears a promising approach for regenerative medicine. Here, we compared the feasibility of two devices, generated by coupling soluble factors of human dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells (DPSCs), with a nanostructured scaffold, to support angiogenesis once transplanted in mice. DPSCs were obtained from impacted wisdom tooth removal, usually considered surgical waste material. After 28 days, we verified the presence of active blood vessels inside the scaffold through optical and scansion electron microscopy. The mRNA expression of surface antigens related to macrophage polarization (CD68, CD80, CD86, CD163, CD206), as well as pro-angiogenic markers (CD31, CD34, CD105, Angpt1, Angpt2, CDH5) was evaluated by real-time PCR. Our results demonstrate the capability of DPSC–scaffold and DPSC soluble factors–scaffold to support angiogenesis, similarly to adipose stem cells, whereas the absence of blood vessels was found in the scaffold grafted alone. Our results provide evidence that DPSC-conditioned medium can be proposed as a cell-free preparation able to support angiogenesis, thus, providing a relevant tool to overcome the issues and restrictions associated with the use of cells

    The use of electronic PROMs provides same outcomes as paper version in a spine surgery registry. Results from a prospective cohort study

    Abstract Background and Purpose Patient-Reported Measured Outcomes (PROMs) are essential to gain a full understanding of a patient's condition, and in spine surgery, these questionnaires are of help when tailoring a surgical strategy. Electronic registries allow for a systematic collection and storage of PROMs, making them readily available for clinical and research purposes. This study aimed to investigate the reliability between the electronic and paper form of ODI (Oswestry Disability Index), SF-36 (Short Form Health Survey 36) and COMI-back (Core Outcome Measures Index for the back) questionnaires. Methods A prospective analysis was performed of ODI, SF-36 and COMI-back questionnaires collected in paper and electronic format in two patients' groups: Pre-Operatively (PO) or at follow-up (FU). All patients, in both groups, completed the three questionnaires in paper and electronic form. The correlation between both methods was assessed with the Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC). Results The data from 100 non-consecutive, volunteer patients with a mean age of 55.6 ± 15.0 years were analysed. For all of the three PROMs, the reliability between paper and electronic questionnaires results was excellent (ICC: ODI = 0.96; COMI = 0.98; SF36-MCS = 0.98; SF36-PCS = 0.98. For all p < 0.001). Conclusions This study proved an excellent reliability between the electronic and paper versions of ODI, SF-36 and COMI-back questionnaires collected using a spine registry. This validation paves the way for stronger widespread use of electronic PROMs. They offer numerous advantages in terms of accessibility, storage, and data analysis compared to paper questionnaires

    O trabalho consistiu em pré-requisito fundamental para o componente do Estágio Supervisionado, cujo objetivo principal foi a demonstração prática dos conhecimentos acumulados até aquele momento no curso. Como resposta à isso, instituiu-se a Indústria de Perfumes denominada “Florência, revele a essência que há em você”, constituída em quotas por responsabilidade Limitada, tributada pelo Lucro Real e acompanhada pelo período de três meses. Um etinerário rigoroso precisou ser seguido já na primeira parte, com a criação da empresa e levantamento das informações relativas a legislação tributária, trabalhista e outras. Também sobre os produtos - desodorantes colônias femininos (Inspire) e masculinos (Hipnotize) -, demonstrando as fichas descritivas de produção, os tributos incidentes, o custo do processo produtivo e as despesas. Por tratar-se de itens supérfluos, na venda incidem alíquotas de impostos maiores, além do cálculo da Substituição Tributária e IPI. Para a formação do preço do produto final, se utilizou do método Mark-up, realizou-se também cálculos referentes a margem de contribuição e ponto de equilíbrio, a fim de verificar o lucro potencial da entidade e o volume a ser produzido. Na segunda parte, ocorreu a contabilização das atividades operacionais por intermédio do sistema contábil/fiscal, o que possibilitou a elaboração dos demonstrativos financeiros. Por meio dos indicadores de liquidez, rentabilidade, endividamento, prazos médios e lucratividade, pode-se realizar as análises, com o intuito de medir o resultado final e sua colocação em um patamar de sucesso

    The nature of Composite Seyfert/Star-forming galaxies revealed by X-ray observations

    This paper presents new Chandra and BeppoSAX observations aimed at investigating the optical/X-ray mismatch in the enigmatic class of the Composite galaxies, discovered by a cross-correlation of IRAS and ROSAT all sky survey catalogues. These galaxies have been classified as star-forming objects on the basis of their optical spectra, while the detection of weak broad wings in the H(alpha) emission in a few of them and their high X-ray luminosity in the ROSAT band indicated the presence of an active nucleus. The analysis of Chandra observations for 4 Composites has revealed nuclear point-like sources, with a typical AGN spectrum (Gamma = 1.7-1.9) and little intrinsic absorption. A strong flux variability has been observed on different time scales, in particular most of the sources were brighter at the ROSAT epoch. Although of relative low luminosity for the AGN class (L(2-10 keV) = 3-60 x 10^{41} erg/s), the active nucleus is nevertheless dominant in the X-ray domain. At other wavelengths it appears to be overwhelmed by the starburst and/or host galaxy light, yielding the Composite classification for these objects.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Ap

    IGR J18249−3243: a new GeV-emitting FR II and the emerging population of high-energy radio galaxies

    The advent of new all-sky radio surveys such as the VLA Sky Survey (VLASS) and the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS), performed with the latest generation radio telescopes, is opening new possibilities on the classification and study of extragalactic γ\gamma-ray sources, specially the underrepresented ones like radio galaxies. In particular, the enhanced sensitivity (sub-mJy level) and resolution (a few arcsec) provides a better morphological and spectral classification. In this work, we present the reclassification of a Fermi-LAT source as a new FRII radio galaxy from the INTEGRAL sample found to emit at GeV energies. Through a broad-band spectral fitting from radio to γ\gamma-ray, we find that the commonly invoked jet contribution is not sufficient to account for the observed γ\gamma-ray flux. Our modeling suggests that the observed emission could mainly originate in the lobes (rather than in the radio core) by inverse Compton scattering of radio-emitting electrons off the ambient photon fields. In addition, we cross-correlated the latest generation radio surveys with a list of Fermi-LAT objects from the literature considered to be candidate misaligned AGN, finding four new radio galaxies with a double-lobed morphology. Additional four objects could be classified as such thanks to previous studies in the literature, for a total of nine new radio galaxies with GeV emission presented in this work. We foresee that further objects of this class might be found in the near future with the advent of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), populating the GeV sky

    Needs and gaps in optical underwater technologies and methods for the investigation of marine animal forest 3D-structural complexity

    Marine animal forests are benthic communities dominated by sessile suspension feeders (such as sponges, corals, and bivalves) able to generate three-dimensional (3D) frameworks with high structural complexity. The biodiversity and functioning of marine animal forests are strictly related to their 3D complexity. The present paper aims at providing new perspectives in underwater optical surveys. Starting from the current gaps in data collection and analysis that critically limit the study and conservation of marine animal forests, we discuss the main technological and methodological needs for the investigation of their 3D structural complexity at different spatial and temporal scales. Despite recent technological advances, it seems that several issues in data acquisition and processing need to be solved, to properly map the different benthic habitats in which marine animal forests are present, their health status and to measure structural complexity. Proper precision and accuracy should be chosen and assured in relation to the biological and ecological processes investigated. Besides, standardized methods and protocols are strictly necessary to meet the FAIR (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability) data principles for the stewardship of habitat mapping and biodiversity, biomass, and growth data
