Regional body composition in college-aged Caucasians from anthropometric measures
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Quantitating fat and lean tissue in isolated body regions may be helpful or required in obesity and health-outcomes research. However, current methods of regional body composition measurement require specialized, expensive equipment such as that used in computed tomography or dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Simple body size or circumference measurement relationships to body composition have been developed but are limited to whole-body applications. We investigated relationships between body size measurements and regional body composition.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using DEXA technology we determined the fat and lean tissue composition for six regions of the body in predominantly Caucasian, college-aged men (n = 32) and women (n = 67). Circumference measurements as well as body weight and height were taken for each individual. Equations relating body measurements to a respective regional fat and lean mass were developed using multiple regression analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Multiple regression R<sup>2 </sup>values ranged from 0.4451 to 0.8953 and 0.1697 to 0.7039 for regional fat and lean mass relationships to body measurements, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The equations developed in this study offer a simple way of estimating regional body composition in a college-aged adult population. The parameters used in the equations are common body measurements that can be obtained with the use of a measuring tape and weight scale.</p
Scanning nano-spin ensemble microscope for nanoscale magnetic and thermal imaging
Quantum sensors based on solid-state spins provide tremendous opportunities
in a wide range of fields from basic physics and chemistry to biomedical
imaging. However, integrating them into a scanning probe microscope to enable
practical, nanoscale quantum imaging is a highly challenging task. Recently,
the use of single spins in diamond in conjunction with atomic force microscopy
techniques has allowed significant progress towards this goal, but
generalisation of this approach has so far been impeded by long acquisition
times or by the absence of simultaneous topographic information. Here we report
on a scanning quantum probe microscope which solves both issues, by employing a
nano-spin ensemble hosted in a nanodiamond. This approach provides up to an
order of magnitude gain in acquisition time, whilst preserving sub-100 nm
spatial resolution both for the quantum sensor and topographic images. We
demonstrate two applications of this microscope. We first image nanoscale
clusters of maghemite particles through both spin resonance spectroscopy and
spin relaxometry, under ambient conditions. Our images reveal fast magnetic
field fluctuations in addition to a static component, indicating the presence
of both superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic particles. We next demonstrate a
new imaging modality where the nano-spin ensemble is used as a thermometer. We
use this technique to map the photo-induced heating generated by laser
irradiation of a single gold nanoparticle in a fluid environment. This work
paves the way towards new applications of quantum probe microscopy such as
thermal/magnetic imaging of operating microelectronic devices and magnetic

Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Reinforced with Multi-Scale Hybrid Fibers and Its Durability-Related Properties
Due to its excellent mechanical properties, dense microstructure, low permeability, ease of placement and volume stability, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is considered the next-generation structural concrete and is increasingly used in transportation infrastructure. While previous research efforts generated valuable results, to achieve the desired performance, UHPC needs to be well formulated with precise and optimized quantities of cementitious materials, fillers, fine aggregate, water, chemical admixtures, and fibers. In addition, the mixture design of UHPC and its correlation with the performance evolution under different curing conditions remain unclear, and there exist critical significant gaps in understanding the efficiency of fibers and mixture design on the properties of UHPC, especially the mechanical and durability-related performance. Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is exploring multiple infrastructure applications that can incorporate UHPC, including joints, overlays, repairs, rehabilitation, and bridge beam fabrication. This project aims to develop UHPC mix design formulations that can be implemented at ready-mix batching plants or precast/prestressed concrete fabrication facilities by identifying and maximizing the roles of fibers and additives in enhancing mechanical and durability-related properties. Four fiber-reinforced mixes and seven UHPC mixes with different fibers were investigated and a UHPC mix for large-scale batching and field applications was recommended
Landscapes of empathy: spatial scenarios, metaphors and metonymies in responses to distant suffering
This study re-analyses focus group data on responses to human rights abuses, to investigate how participants’ experiences in their local social and physical worlds influence empathy with distant suffering others.
Metaphors, metonymies, narratives and typifying scenarios were identified in the discourse dynamics. Scenarios, metaphors and metonymies of space and place emerge as particularly significant in the dialogic co-construction of moral reasoning. Embodied experiences, specifically encounters with people begging in the street, become emblematic of perceived threats to personal space that should feel private and secure. Systematic spatial metaphors construct a landscape of empathic understanding with an optimal distance for empathy, neither too close nor too far. Faced with distant suffering others in prompt materials, participants respond with parallel reasoning on the symbolic landscape. Implications for increasing empathic understanding of distant others are discussed
Metaphors for ‘good’ and ‘bad’ deaths: A health professional view
This paper discusses the metaphors used by sixteen palliative healthcare professionals from around the United Kingdom in semi-structured interviews to describe what they see as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ deaths. e interviews, conducted for the large-scale “Metaphor in End-of-Life Care” project, are set against the background of contemporary practices and discourses around end-of-life care, dying and quality of death. To date, the use of metaphor in descriptions of different types of deaths has not received much attention. Applying the Metaphor Identification Procedure (Pragglejaz Group, 2007) we find that the difference between good and bad deaths is partly expressed via different frequencies of contrasting metaphors, such as ‘peacefulness’ and ‘openness’ as opposed to ‘struggle’ and ‘pushing away’ professional help. We show how metaphors are used to: evaluate deaths and the dying; justify those evaluations; present a remarkably consistent view of different types of deaths; and promote a particular ‘framing’ of a good death, which is closely linked with the dominant sociocultural and professional contexts of our interviewees. We discuss the implications of these consistent evaluations and framings in broader end-of-life care contexts, and reflect on the significance of our findings for the role of metaphor in communication about sensitive experiences
The pd <--> pi+ t reaction around the Delta resonance
The pd pi+ t process has been calculated in the energy region around the
Delta-resonance with elementary production/absorption mechanisms involving one
and two nucleons. The isobar degrees of freedom have been explicitly included
in the two-nucleon mechanism via pi-- and rho-exchange diagrams. No free
parameters have been employed in the analysis since all the parameters have
been fixed in previous studies on the simpler pp pi+ d process. The
treatment of the few-nucleon dynamics entailed a Faddeev-based calculation of
the reaction, with continuum calculations for the initial p-d state and
accurate solutions of the three-nucleon bound-state equation. The integral
cross-section was found to be quite sensitive to the NN interaction employed
while the angular dependence showed less sensitivity. Approximately a 4% effect
was found for the one-body mechanism, for the three-nucleon dynamics in the p-d
channel, and for the inclusion of a large, possibly converged, number of
three-body partial states, indicating that these different aspects are of

Impacts of the global economic crisis on cyprus tourism and policy responses
This study examines the impacts of the global economic crisis on Cyprus tourism and the pertinent policy responses. A qualitative approach was adopted by conducting eight semi-structured interviews with tourism authorities and suppliers/professionals. Findings indicated the main impacts of the crisis on Cypriot tourism: lack of competitiveness, decreased visitation/revenues, inadequate quality and escalated pricing. Furthermore, findings identify three types of policy measures: (i) immediate response measures; (ii) foreign investment in tourism; and (iii) diversification of the tourism product and quality improvement. The study highlights the need for Cyprus to develop a comprehensive tourism planning framework. It is suggested that crisis plans of small island states should be developed upon a holistic framework that leverages their destination capitals
Intelligent policy making? Key actors' perspectives on the development and implementation of a national early years' initiative
Increased political enthusiasm for evidence-based policy and action has re-ignited interest in the use of evidence within political and practitioner networks. Theories of evidence-based policy making and practice are being re-considered in an attempt to better understand the processes through which knowledge translation occurs. Understanding how policy develops, and practice results, has the potential to facilitate effective evidence use. Further knowledge of the factors which shape healthcare delivery and their influence in different contexts is needed.<p></p>
This paper explores the processes involved in the development of a complex intervention in Scotland's National Health Service (NHS). It uses a national oral health programme for children (Childsmile) as a case study, drawing upon key actors' perceptions of the influence of different drivers (research evidence, practitioner knowledge and values, policy, and political and local context) to programme development. Framework analysis is used to analyse stakeholder accounts from in-depth interviews. Documentary review is also undertaken.<p></p>
Findings suggest that Childsmile can be described as an ‘evidence-informed’ intervention, blending available research evidence with knowledge from practitioner experience and continual learning through evaluation, to plan delivery. The importance of context was underscored, in terms of the need to align with prevailing political ideology and in the facilitative strength of networks within the relatively small public health community in Scotland. Respondents' perceptions support several existing theoretical models of translation, however no single theory offered a comprehensive framework covering all aspects of the complex processes reported. Childsmile's use of best available evidence and on-going contribution to knowledge suggest that the programme is an example of intelligent policy making with international relevance.<p></p>
Synthesis of Passerini-3CR Polymers and Assembly into Cytocompatible Polymersomes

Published by Wiley-VCH GmbH The versatility of the Passerini three component reaction (Passerini-3CR) is herein exploited for the synthesis of an amphiphilic diblock copolymer, which self-assembles into polymersomes. Carboxy-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether is reacted with AB-type bifunctional monomers and tert-butyl isocyanide in a single process via Passerini-3CR. The resultant diblock copolymer (P1) is obtained in good yield and molar mass dispersity and is well tolerated in model cell lines. The Passerini-3CR versatility and reproducibility are shown by the synthesis of P2, P3, and P4 copolymers. The ability of the Passerini P1 polymersomes to incorporate hydrophilic molecules is verified by loading doxorubicin hydrochloride in P1DOX polymersomes. The flexibility of the synthesis is further demonstrated by simple post-functionalization with a dye, Cyanine-5 (Cy5). The obtained P1-Cy5 polymersomes rapidly internalize in 2D cell monolayers and penetrate deep into 3D spheroids of MDA-MB-231 triple-negative breast cancer cells. P1-Cy5 polymersomes injected systemically in healthy mice are well tolerated and no visible adverse effects are seen under the conditions tested. These data demonstrate that new, biodegradable, biocompatible polymersomes having properties suitable for future use in drug delivery can be easily synthesized by the Passerini-3CR
Qualitative Exploration of Illness Perceptions of Rheumatoid Arthritis in the General Public
Treating patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) within three months of symptom onset 2 leads to significantly improved outcomes. However, many people delay seeking medical 3 attention. In order to understand the reasons for this delay, it is important to have a thorough 4 understanding of public perceptions about RA. The current study investigated these perceptions 5 used the Self-Regulation Model (SRM) as a framework to explain how health behavior is 6 influenced by illness perceptions (prototypes) through qualitative interviews with 15 members of 7 the public without RA. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analyzed using 8 framework analysis based on SRM illness perceptions. 9 Both accurate and inaccurate perceptions about the identity, causes, consequences, 10 controllability and timeline of RA were identified. This highlights opportunities to enhance public 11 knowledge about RA. These findings further support the utility of exploring prototypical beliefs of 12 illness, suggesting their potential role in influencing help-seeking behaviors and identifying 13 probable drivers/barriers to early presentation
