    The European approach to online disinformation: geopolitical and regulatory dissonance

    The COVID-19 health crisis and the invasion of Ukraine have placed disinformation in the focus of European policies. Our aim is to analyze the emerging European policy on counter-disinformation practices and regulations. To do this, we examine developing European Union (EU) strategy, against different forms of fake news, from a multidisciplinary approach that combines Journalism and Geopolitics. Our methodology is based on the critical analysis of documents generated by the EU on disinformation from 2018 to 2022, including reports, communications, statements and other legislative texts. Our findings suggest that the EU’s policy against disinformation is based on two opposing logics that coexist and compete. The first is securitization, which understands this problem as a threat to democracy that legitimizes ‘exceptional decision-making’ from a hard power perspective. The second is based on the self-regulation and voluntarism of digital platforms with a clear orientation towards soft law and minimal intervention. The recent adoption of the Digital Services Act and the stronger regulation of online platforms do not replace this logic, since this legislation adopts a “co-regulatory framework”. The coexistence of these two logics generates internal contradictions and dissonance that can determine the future of European policies on this important topic and its chances of success

    Crime trends through two decades of social changes in Spain

    "Over the last two decades, the Spanish social fabric has undergone a variety of profound changes, which in turn may explain the rise in police-recorded crime and prison population figures. Although the rise in crime reported to the police has been higher for common offences—misdemeanors—, the mainstream media concentrates overwhelmingly in serious violent crimes—felonies—. Spain does not have an official agency responsible for conducting victimization surveys to measure crime trends as directly experienced by the citizens. Based on this methodology, our study shows that contrary to information gathered from police data, and despite social fabric changes, crime in Spain is decreasing. The present study also reveals the distorted public perception of this trend, which seems to respond to a repetitive coverage of serious crime by the mainstream media." [author's abstract

    Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    Recombination study of combined halides (Cl, Br, I) perovskite solar cells

    We report on the preparation of a series of solution-processed perovskite solar cells based on methylammonium (MA) lead halide derivatives, MAPbX 3, which show tunable optical properties depending on the nature and ratio of the halides employed (X = Cl, Br, and I). Devices have been prepared with different cell architecture, thin film, and mesoporous scaffold (TiO 2 and Al2O3). We have analyzed different sample sets focusing on the characterization of the charge recombination by means of impedance spectroscopy (IS). On the one hand, our study discloses that the insertion of both Cl and Br in the perovskite lattice reduces the charge recombination rates in the light absorber film, thus determining the open circuit voltage (Voc) of the device. The samples prepared on a mesoporous Al2O3 electrode present lower charge recombination rates than those devices prepared on mesoporous TiO2. Furthermore, the addition of Br in the perovskite structure was demonstrated to improve slightly the lifetime of the devices; in fact, the efficiencies of all devices tested remained at least at the 80% of the initial value 1 month after their preparation. These results highlight the crucial role of the charge-recombination processes on the performance of the perovskite solar cells and pave the way for further progress on this field.Fil: Suarez, Belen.     En lo que sigue se efectuará una crítica del documento denominado: «Valoración fáctico- jurídica por parte de observadores internacionales y nacionales de la Sentencia condenatoria de autoridades y líderes sociales catalanes (STS 459/2019)» (en adelante IOI)*. Se trata de llevar a cabo un análisis de los contenidos del referido texto, contrastándolos con la actividad procesal desenvuelta alrededor del denominado coloquialmente «juicio del procés»; es decir: no sólo con la Sentencia que puso n al procedimiento, sino también con otra clase de resoluciones (fundamentalmente autos) donde se resolvían distintas cuestiones planteadas por los procesados. Finalmente se incluye, «a modo de conclusión», una serie de consideraciones donde se realiza una valoración global del Informe del, denominado, grupo de «observadores internacionales y nacionales» en el aludido procedimiento
