    Speaking activities and pegagogical strategies to promote oral participation among fifth grade introverted students

    El siguiente proyecto llamado “actividades de habla y estrategias pedagógicas para promover participación oral entre estudiantes introvertidos de quinto grado” es un estudio descriptivo e interpretativo de caso que usa como métodos de investigación( diarios investigativos, observaciones y entrevistas) con el objetivo de diagnosticar e interpretar situaciones dentro del aula de clase en relación a estrategias y actividades orales implementadas por los investigadores para promover participación oral entre los participantes. Este estudio se llevo a cabo en la ciudad de Pereira Colombia, cuyo enfoque educativo actual se relaciona con el desarrollo e implementación de un plan educativo de bilingüismo en instituciones educativas públicas. La escuela en la cual se desarrolló el estudio es una institución educativa pública llamada el “Pueblito” la cual tiene un acuerdo con la universidad de Pereira para que sus practicantes dicten clases de Inglés a los estudiantes y de esta manera generar un mayor nivel académico en esta área. Para fundamentar las bases de esta investigación se tomaron en cuenta una serie de autores y teorias relacionadas con el rol de la personalidad en el desarrollo de participación oral, y tipos de actividades para promover participación en este campo y la relación de esta con los estudiantes introvertidos. Los resultados encontrados en este estudio estan enfocados a dar respuestas a las siguientes preguntas de investigación: ¿Qué nos dicen las actividades de habla implementadas a estudiantes de quinto grado en un colegio publico de Pereira acerca de la participación oral en Ingles de estudiantes introvertidos? de igual manera. ¿Qué estrategias pedagógicas pueden ser consideradas para diseñar e implementar actividades orales que generen participación en inglés en un grupo de grado quinto en una escuela pública de Pereira que presenta estudiantes introvertidos? Los hallazgos encontrados en esta investigacion estan enfocados en lo siguiente: tipos de actividades usadas para promover participación oral entre estudiantes introvertidos, estrategias pedagógicas utilizadas para promover participación oral y sus respectivas sub-categorías.This research study titled “speaking activities and pedagogical strategies to promote oral participation among 5th grade introverted students” is a descriptive and interpretative case study. To respond to the reaserch questions three methods were used during the investigation. (Interview, observations and journals). The objective is to diagnose and analize the current situation, implement speaking activities and strategies to generate oral participation among introverted students. The current study took place in Pereira, Colombia where a plan of bilingualism is being carried out; therefore, there is a strong interest in the pedagogical procesess, methods, and approaches in relation to foreign language teaching. The educational institution were this investigation took place goes by the name of “El pueblito”. This primary school has an agreement of bilingualism with the University of Pereira. In order to build the bases of this thesis project and analyze data, various points of view will be mentioned by related authors that are involved in the field of personalty factors in learning, the role of speaking activities in EFL and the relationship it has with introverted language students. The results provided by the findings in this study are guided towards answering the following research questions: what do speaking activities proposed for a 5th grade course from a public Pereira school tells us about introverted student’s English oral participation? What pedagogical strategies should be considered when designing and implementing speaking activities for a 5th grade Pereira public school group with introverted students? The findings found in this project are the following type of speaking activities used to promote oral participation, Pedagogical strategies fostered oral participation among introverted participants and it respected sub categories

    The Rest-Frame UV Luminosity Density of Star-Forming Galaxies at Redshifts z>3.5

    We have measured the rest--frame lambda~1500 Ang comoving specific luminosity density of star--forming galaxies at redshift 3.5<z<6.5 from deep images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)and the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), obtained as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS). We used color selection criteria to construct samples of star--forming galaxies at redshifts z~4, 5 and 6, identified by the signature of the 912 Ang Lyman continuum discontinuity and Lyman-alpha forest blanketing in their rest--frame UV colors (Lyman--break galaxies). The ACS samples cover ~0.09 square degree, and are also relatively deep, reaching between 0.2 and 0.5 L_3^*, depending on the redshift, where L3L_3^* is the characteristic UV luminosity of Lyman--break galaxies at z~3. The specific luminosity density of Lyman--break galaxies appears to be nearly constant with redshift from z~3 to z~6, although the measure at z~6 remains relatively uncertain, because it depends on the accurate estimate of the faint counts of the z~6 sample. If Lyman--break galaxies are fair tracers of the cosmic star formation activity, our results suggest that at z~6 the universe was already producing stars as vigorously as it did near its maximum several Gyr later, at 1<~z<~3. Thus, the onset of large--scale star formation in the universe is to be sought at around z~6 or higher, namely at less than ~7% of the current cosmic age.Comment: AAS LaTeX macros 4.0, 11 pages, 1 postscript figure.     Using Ultra Long Period Cepheids to Extend the Cosmic Distance Ladder to 100 Mpc and Beyond

    We examine the properties of 17 long period (80-180 days) and very luminous (median absolute magnitude of M_I= -7.93 and M_V= -7.03) Cepheids to see if they can serve as an useful distance indicator. We find that these Ultra Long Period (ULP) Cepheids have a relatively shallow Period-Luminosity (PL) relation, so in fact they are more "standard candle"-like than classical Cepheids. In the reddening-free Wesenheit index, the slope of the ULP PL relation is ~10 times less steep than the standard PL relation for the SMC Cepheids. The scatter of our sample about the W_I PL relation is 0.22 mag, approaching that of classical Cepheids and Type Ia Supernovae. We expect this scatter to decrease as bigger and more uniform samples of ULP Cepheids are obtained. We also measure a non-zero period derivative for one ULP Cepheid (SMC HV829) and use the result to probe evolutionary models and mass loss of massive stars. ULP Cepheids main advantage over classical Cepheids is that they are more luminous, and as such show great potential as stellar distance indicators to galaxies up to 100 Mpc and beyond.Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ. 11 pages, 8 figure

    Reducing distance errors for standard candles and standard sirens with weak-lensing shear and flexion maps

    Gravitational lensing induces significant errors in the measured distances to high-redshift standard candles and standard sirens such as type-Ia supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and merging supermassive black hole binaries. There will therefore be a significant benefit from correcting for the lensing error by using independent and accurate estimates of the lensing magnification. We investigate how accurately the magnification can be inferred from convergence maps reconstructed from galaxy shear and flexion data. We employ ray-tracing through the Millennium Simulation to simulate lensing observations in large fields, and perform a weak-lensing reconstruction on these fields. We identify optimal ways to filter the reconstructed convergence maps and to convert them to magnification maps. We find that a shear survey with 100 galaxies/arcmin^2 can help to reduce the lensing-induced distance errors for standard candles/sirens at redshifts z=1.5 (z=5) on average by 20% (10%), whereas a futuristic survey with shear and flexion estimates from 500 galaxies/arcmin^2 yields much larger reductions of 50% (35%). For redshifts z>=3, a further improvement by 5% can be achieved, if the individual redshifts of the galaxies are used in the reconstruction. Moreover, the reconstruction allows one to identify regions for which the convergence is low, and in which an error reduction by up to 75% can be achieved.Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures, submitted to MNRAS, minor changes, references extended, comments welcom

    Paraneoplastic Syndromes and Thymic Malignancies: An Examination of the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group Retrospective Database

    Introduction Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are associated with paraneoplastic autoimmune (PN/AI) syndromes. Myasthenia gravis is the most common PN/AI syndrome associated with TETs. Methods The International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group (ITMIG) retrospective database was examined to determine (i) baseline and treatment characteristics associated with PN/AI syndromes and (ii) the prognostic role of PN/AI syndromes for patients with TETs. The competing risks model was used to estimate cumulative incidence of recurrence (CIR) and the Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate overall survival (OS). A Cox proportional hazards model was used for multivariate analysis. Results 6670 patients with known PN/AI syndrome status were identified from 1951-2012. PN/AI syndromes were associated with younger age, female sex, type B1 thymoma, earlier stage, and an increased rate of total thymectomy and complete resection status. There was a statistically significant lower CIR in the PN/AI (+) group compared to the PN/AI (-) group (10-year 17.3% vs. 21.2%, respectively, p=0.0003). The OS was improved in the PN/AI (+) group compared to the PN/AI (-) group (HR 0.63, 95% CI 0.54-0.74, P<0.0001, median OS 21.6 years versus 17.0 years, respectively). However, in the multivariate model for recurrence-free survival and OS, PN/AI syndrome was not an independent prognostic factor. Discussion Previously, there has been mixed data regarding the prognostic role of PN/AI syndromes for patients with TETs. Here, using the largest dataset in the world for TETs, PN/AI syndromes were associated with favorable features (i.e. earlier stage, complete resection status) but were not an independent prognostic factor for TETs

    Type Ia Supernova Rate Measurements To Redshift 2.5 From CANDELS: Searching For Prompt Explosions In The Early Universe

    dThe Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) was a multi-cycle treasury program on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) that surveyed a total area of -0.25 deg2 with -900 HST orbits spread across five fields over three years. Within these survey images we discovered 65 supernovae (SNe) of all types, out to z 2.5. We classify -24 of these as Type Ia SNe (SNe Ia) based on host galaxy redshifts and SN photometry (supplemented by grism spectroscopy of six SNe). Here we present a measurement of the volumetric SN Ia rate as a function of redshift, reaching for the first time beyond z =- 2 and putting new constraints on SN Ia progenitor models. Our highest redshift bin includes detections of SNe that exploded when the universe was only -3 Gyr old and near the peak of the cosmic star formation history. This gives the CANDELS high redshift sample unique leverage for evaluating the fraction of SNe Ia that explode promptly after formation ( 40 Myr. However, mild tension is apparent between ground-based low-z surveys and space-based high-z surveys. In both CANDELS and the sister HST program CLASH (Cluster Lensing And Supernova Survey with Hubble), we find a low rate of SNe Ia at z > 1. This could be a hint that prompt progenitors are in fact relatively rare, accounting for only 20% of all SN Ia explosions-though further analysis and larger samples will be needed to examine that suggestion.     A Redshift z=5.4 Lyman alpha Emitting Galaxy with Linear Morphology in the GRAPES/UDF Field

    We have discovered an extended Lyman alpha plume associated with a compact source at redshift 5.4 in slitless spectroscopic data from the Grism ACS Program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) project. The spatial extent of the emission is about 6 x 1.5 kpc (1 x 0.25 arcsec). Combining our grism data and the broadband images from the Hubble UltraDeep Field (UDF) images, we find a Lyman alpha line flux of 2e-17 erg/cm2/s and surface brightness 7e-17 erg/cm2/s/arcsec2. The UDF images show diffuse continuum emission associated with the Lyman alpha plume (hereafter UDF 5225), with three embedded knots. The morphology of UDF 5225 is highly suggestive of a galaxy in assembly. It is moreover possible that the prominent Lyman alpha emission from this object is due to an active nucleus, and that we are seeing the simultaneous growth through accretion of a galaxy and its central black hole. Followup observations at higher spectral resolution could test this hypothesis.Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
