Models with three Higgs doublets in the triplet representations of A(4) or S-4
We consider the quark sector of theories containing three scalar SU(2)(L) doublets in the triplet representation of A(4) (or S-4) and three generations of quarks in arbitrary A(4) (or S-4) representations. We show that for all possible choices of quark field representations and for all possible alignments of the Higgs vacuum expectation values that can constitute global minima of the scalar potential, it is not possible to obtain simultaneously nonvanishing quark masses and a nonvanishing CP-violating phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. As a result, in this minimal form, models with three scalar fields in the triplet representation of A(4) or S-4 cannot be extended to the quark sector in a way consistent with experiment
Neutrinos and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe
The discovery of neutrino oscillations provides a solid evidence for nonzero
neutrino masses and leptonic mixing. The fact that neutrino masses are so tiny
constitutes a puzzling problem in particle physics. From the theoretical
viewpoint, the smallness of neutrino masses can be elegantly explained through
the seesaw mechanism. Another challenging issue for particle physics and
cosmology is the explanation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in
Nature. Among the viable mechanisms, leptogenesis is a simple and
well-motivated framework. In this talk we briefly review these aspects, making
emphasis on the possibility of linking neutrino physics to the cosmological
baryon asymmetry originated from leptogenesis.Comment: 8 pages, 1 table, 1 figure; Based on talk given at the Symposium

Limited Stop Services Design Considering Variable Dwell Time and Operating Capacity Constraints
This article proposes an optimization model to set frequencies, vehicle capacities, required fleet and the stops serving each route along a transit corridor which minimize the total user and operating costs. The optimization problem is solved by applying the ?Black Hole? algorithm, which imitates the movement of stars (solutions), towards a black hole (Best solution). The main contributions of the model are based on incorporating variable dwell times depending on bus stop demand not only to the passenger perceived journey times but also to the bus cycle times and on considering capacity constraints in both vehicles and bus tops. This led to a more accurate and realistic operating times and user perceived journey times. The application of the model to two case studies and the sensitivity analysis carried out demonstrate that for low levels of demand, constant dwell times can be assumed but being these times different between the different stops of the corridor, considering their demand. However, with high level of demand the difference found in operating costs and travel times strongly recommend incorporating variable dwell times in the model in order to achieve a more realistic design of transit corridor strategies
Unifying gauge couplings at the string scale
Using the current precision electroweak data, we look for the minimal
particle content which is necessary to add to the standard model in order to
have a complete unification of gauge couplings and gravity at the weakly
coupled heterotic string scale. We find that the addition of a vector-like
fermion at an intermediate scale and a non-standard hypercharge normalization
are in general sufficient to achieve this goal at two-loop level. Requiring the
extra matter scale to be below the TeV scale, it is found that the addition of
three vector-like fermion doublets with a mass around 700 GeV yields a perfect
string-scale unification, provided that the affine levels are , as in the string-GUT. Furthermore,
if supersymmetry is broken at the unification scale, the Higgs mass is
predicted in the range 125 GeV - 170 GeV, depending on the precise values of
the top quark mass and parameter.Comment: 11 pages, 4 eps figures, using jpconf style, talk given at CORFU2005,

.1. Structural remodeling and rotational activity in persistent/long-lasting atrial fibrillation: gender-effect differences and impact on post-ablation outcome
Background: Structural and post-ablation gender differences are reported in atrial fibrillation (AF). We analyzed the gender differences in structural remodeling and AF mechanisms in patients with persistent/long-lasting AF who underwent wide area circumferential pulmonary vein isolation (WACPVI).
Materials and Methods: Ultra-high-density mapping was used to study atrial remodeling and AF drivers in 85 consecutive patients. Focal and rotational activity (RAc) were identified with the CartoFinder system and activation sequence analysis. The impact of RAc location on post-ablation outcomes was analyzed.
Results: This study included 64 men and 21 women. RAc was detected in 73.4% of men and 38.1% of women (p = 0.003). RAc patients had higher left atrium (LA) voltage (0.64 ± 0.3 vs. 0.50 ± 0.2 mV; p = 0.01), RAc sites had higher voltage than non-RAc sites 0.77 ± 0.46 vs. 0.53 ± 0.37 mV (p < 0.001). Women had lower LA voltage than men (0.42 vs. 0.64 mV; p < 0.001), including pulmonary vein (PV) antra (0.16 vs. 0.30 mV; p < 0.001) and posterior wall (0.34 vs. 0.51 mV; p < 0.001). RAc in the posterior atrium was recorded in few women (23.8 vs. 54.7% in men; p = 0.014). AF recurrence rate was higher in patients with RAc outside WACPVI than those with all RAc inside WACPVI or no RAc (63.4 vs. 11.1 and 31.0%; p = 0.008 and p = 0.01). Comparison of selected patients using propensity score matching confirmed lower atrial voltage (0.4 ± 0.2 vs. 0.7 ± 0.3 mV; p = 0.007) and less RAc (38 vs. 75%; p = 0.02) in women.
Conclusion: Women have shown more advanced structural remodeling at ablation, which is associated with a lower incidence of RAc (usually located outside the WACPVI). These findings could explain post-ablation gender differences. This study was supported by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid, Spain (PI18/01895 and DTS21/00064), Red de Terapia Celular from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid, Spain (RD16/0011/0029), Ricors "Red de Investigación Cooperativa Orientada a Resultados en Salud" RICORS TERAV (RD21/0017/0002), and the Sección del Ritmo de la Sociedad Española de Cardiología (Grant: Beca de la Asociacion del Ritmo para formación en investigacion post-residencia en centros españoles de la Sección del Ritmo de la Sociedad Española de Cardiología), Madrid, Spain
