Impedance model for the polarization-dependent optical absorption of superconducting single-photon detectors
We measured the single-photon detection efficiency of NbN superconducting
single photon detectors as a function of the polarization state of the incident
light for different wavelengths in the range from 488 nm to 1550 nm. The
polarization contrast varies from ~5% at 488 nm to ~30% at 1550 nm, in good
agreement with numerical calculations. We use an optical-impedance model to
describe the absorption for polarization parallel to the wires of the detector.
For lossy NbN films, the absorption can be kept constant by keeping the product
of layer thickness and filling factor constant. As a consequence, we find that
the maximum possible absorption is independent of filling factor. By
illuminating the detector through the substrate, an absorption efficiency of
~70% can be reached for a detector on Si or GaAs, without the need for an

Autoinducers act as biological timers in Vibrio harveyi
Quorum sensing regulates cell density-dependent phenotypes and involves the synthesis, excretion and detection of so-called autoinducers. Vibrio harveyi strain ATCC BAA-1116 (recently reclassified as Vibrio campbellii), one of the best-characterized model organisms for the study of quorum sensing, produces and responds to three autoinducers. HAI-1, AI-2 and CAI-1 are recognized by different receptors, but all information is channeled into the same signaling cascade, which controls a specific set of genes. Here we examine temporal variations of availability and concentration of the three autoinducers in V. harveyi, and monitor the phenotypes they regulate, from the early exponential to the stationary growth phase in liquid culture. Specifically, the exponential growth phase is characterized by an increase in AI-2 and the induction of bioluminescence, while HAI-1 and CAI-1 are undetectable prior to the late exponential growth phase. CAI-1 activity reaches its maximum upon entry into stationary phase, while molar concentrations of AI-2 and HAI-1 become approximately equal. Similarly, autoinducer-dependent exoproteolytic activity increases at the transition into stationary phase. These findings are reflected in temporal alterations in expression of the luxR gene that encodes the master regulator LuxR, and of four autoinducer-regulated genes during growth. Moreover, in vitro phosphorylation assays reveal a tight correlation between the HAI-1/AI-2 ratio as input and levels of receptor-mediated phosphorylation of LuxU as output. Our study supports a model in which the combinations of autoinducers available, rather than cell density per se, determine the timing of various processes in V. harveyi populations
Numerical study of the strongly screened vortex glass model in an external field
The vortex glass model for a disordered high-T_c superconductor in an
external magnetic field is studied in the strong screening limit. With exact
ground state (i.e. T=0) calculations we show that 1) the ground state of the
vortex configuration varies drastically with infinitesimal variations of the
strength of the external field, 2) the minimum energy of global excitation
loops of length scale L do not depend on the strength of the external field,
however 3) the excitation loops themself depend sensibly on the field. From 2)
we infer the absence of a true superconducting state at any finite temperature

Simultaneous MITSuME gRI monitoring of S5 0716+714
We present results of our intra-night optical flux monitoring observations of
S5 0716+714 done simultaneously in gRI filters. The observations were done
using Multicolor Imaging Telescopes for Survey and Monstrous Explosions
(MITSuME) instrument on the 50 cm telescope at the Okayama Astrophysical
Observatory over 30 nights between 11 March 2008 and 8 May 2008. Of these 30
nights, 22 nights have continuous (without any break) observations with
duration ranging from 1 to 6 hours and hence were considered for intra-night
optical variability (INOV). In total we have 4888 datapoints which were
simultaneous in gR and I filters. Of the 22 nights considered for INOV, the
object showed flux variability on 19 nights with the amplitude of variability
in the I-band ranging from ~4% to ~55%. The duty cycle for INOV was thus found
to be 83%. No time lag between different bands was noticed on most of the
nights, except for 3 nights where the variation in g was found to lead that of
the I band by 0.3 to 1.5 hrs. On inter-night timescales, no lag was found
between g and I bands. On inter-night timescales as well as intra-night
timescales on most of the nights, the amplitude of variability was found to
increase toward shorter wavelengths. The flux variations in the different bands
were not achromatic, with the blazar tending to become bluer when brighter both
on inter-night and intra-night timescales; and this might be attributed to the
larger amplitude variation at shorter wavelengths. A clear periodic variation
of 3.3 hrs was found on 1 April 2008 and a hint for another possible periodic
variability of 4 hrs was found on 31 March 2008. During our 30 days of
observations over a 2 month period the source has varied with an amplitude of

A Search for Rapid Photometric Variability in Symbiotic Binaries
We report on our survey for rapid (time scale of minutes) photometric
variability in symbiotic binaries. These binaries are becoming an increasingly
important place to study accretion onto white dwarfs since they are candidate
Type Ia supernovae progenitors. Unlike in most cataclysmic variables, the white
dwarfs in symbiotics typically accrete from a wind, at rates greater than or
equal to 10^{-9} solar masses per year. In order to elucidate the differences
between symbiotics and other white dwarf accretors, as well as search for
magnetism in symbiotic white dwarfs, we have studied 35 primarily northern
symbiotic binaries via differential optical photometry. Our study is the most
comprehensive to date of rapid variability in symbiotic binaries. We have found
one magnetic accretor, Z And, previously reported by Sokoloski & Bildsten
(1999). In four systems (EG And, BX Mon, CM Aql, and BF Cyg), some evidence for
flickering at a low level (roughly 10 mmag) is seen for the first time. These
detections are, however, marginal. For 25 systems, we place tight upper limits
(order of mmag) on both aperiodic and periodic variability, highlighting a
major difference between symbiotics and cataclysmic variables. The remaining
five of the objects included in our sample (the 2 recurrent novae RS Oph and T
CrB, plus CH Cyg, o Ceti, and MWC 560) had previous detections of
large-amplitude optical flickering, and we present our extensive observations
of these systems in a separate paper. We discuss the impact of our results on
the ``standard'' picture of wind-fed accretion, and speculate on the
possibility that in most symbiotics, light from quasi-steady nuclear burning on

Spatial transcriptomics combined with single-cell RNA-sequencing unravels the complex inflammatory cell network in atopic dermatitis
BackgroundAtopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease with complex pathogenesis for which the cellular and molecular crosstalk in AD skin has not been fully understood.MethodsSkin tissues examined for spatial gene expression were derived from the upper arm of 6 healthy control (HC) donors and 7 AD patients (lesion and nonlesion). We performed spatial transcriptomics sequencing to characterize the cellular infiltrate in lesional skin. For single‐cell analysis, we analyzed the single‐cell data from suction blister material from AD lesions and HC skin at the antecubital fossa skin (4 ADs and 5 HCs) and full‐thickness skin biopsies (4 ADs and 2 HCs). The multiple proximity extension assays were performed in the serum samples from 36 AD patients and 28 HCs.ResultsThe single‐cell analysis identified unique clusters of fibroblasts, dendritic cells, and macrophages in the lesional AD skin. Spatial transcriptomics analysis showed the upregulation of COL6A5, COL4A1, TNC, and CCL19 in COL18A1‐expressing fibroblasts in the leukocyte‐infiltrated areas in AD skin. CCR7‐expressing dendritic cells (DCs) showed a similar distribution in the lesions. Additionally, M2 macrophages expressed CCL13 and CCL18 in this area. Ligand–receptor interaction analysis of the spatial transcriptome identified neighboring infiltration and interaction between activated COL18A1‐expressing fibroblasts, CCL13‐ and CCL18‐expressing M2 macrophages, CCR7‐ and LAMP3‐expressing DCs, and T cells. As observed in skin lesions, serum levels of TNC and CCL18 were significantly elevated in AD, and correlated with clinical disease severity.ConclusionIn this study, we show the unknown cellular crosstalk in leukocyte‐infiltrated area in lesional skin. Our findings provide a comprehensive in‐depth knowledge of the nature of AD skin lesions to guide the development of better treatments
Quantum physics meets biology
Quantum physics and biology have long been regarded as unrelated disciplines,
describing nature at the inanimate microlevel on the one hand and living
species on the other hand. Over the last decades the life sciences have
succeeded in providing ever more and refined explanations of macroscopic
phenomena that were based on an improved understanding of molecular structures
and mechanisms. Simultaneously, quantum physics, originally rooted in a world
view of quantum coherences, entanglement and other non-classical effects, has
been heading towards systems of increasing complexity. The present perspective
article shall serve as a pedestrian guide to the growing interconnections
between the two fields. We recapitulate the generic and sometimes unintuitive
characteristics of quantum physics and point to a number of applications in the
life sciences. We discuss our criteria for a future quantum biology, its
current status, recent experimental progress and also the restrictions that
nature imposes on bold extrapolations of quantum theory to macroscopic

Home birth and barriers to referring women with obstetric complications to hospitals: a mixed-methods study in Zahedan, southeastern Iran
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>One factor that contributes to high maternal mortality in developing countries is the delayed use of Emergency Obstetric-Care (EmOC) facilities. The objective of this study was to determine the factors that hinder midwives and parturient women from using hospitals when complications occur during home birth in Sistan and Baluchestan province, Iran, where 23% of all deliveries take place in non- hospital settings.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In the study and data management, a mixed-methods approach was used. In the quantitative phase, we compared the existing health-sector data with World Health Organization (WHO) standards for the availability and use of EmOC services. The qualitative phase included collection and analysis of interviews with midwives and traditional birth attendants and twenty-one in-depth interviews with mothers. The data collected in this phase were managed according to the principles of qualitative data analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The findings demonstrate that three distinct factors lead to indecisiveness and delay in the use of EmOC by the midwives and mothers studied. Socio-cultural and familial reasons compel some women to choose to give birth at home and to hesitate seeking professional emergency care for delivery complications. Apprehension about being insulted by physicians, the necessity of protecting their professional integrity in front of patients and an inability to persuade their patients lead to an over-insistence by midwives on completing deliveries at the mothers' homes and a reluctance to refer their patients to hospitals. The low quality and expense of EmOC and the mothers' lack of health insurance also contribute to delays in referral.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Women who choose to give birth at home accept the risk that complications may arise. Training midwives and persuading mothers and significant others who make decisions about the value of referring women to hospitals at the onset of life-threatening complications are central factors to increasing the use of available hospitals. The hospitals must be safe, comfortable and attractive environments for parturition and should give appropriate consideration to the ethical and cultural concerns of the women. Appropriate management of financial and insurance-related issues can help midwives and mothers make a rational decision when complications arise.</p
Atopic dermatitis: Correlation of distinct risk factors with age of onset in adulthood compared to childhood
Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) has long been regarded as a primarily pediatric disease. However, there is growing evidence for a high rate of adult-onset AD. We aimed to characterize factors associated with adult-onset versus childhood-onset AD and controls.
Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data of the CK-CARE-ProRaD cohorts Bonn, Augsburg, Davos, Zürich of 736 adult patients stratified by age of AD onset (childhood-onset <18 years: 76.4% (subsets: 0 to 2; ≥2 to 6; ≥7 to 11; ≥12 to 18); adult-onset ≥18 years: 23.6% (subsets: ≥18 to 40; ≥41 to 60; ≥61) and 167 controls (91 atopic, 76 non-atopic)).
Results: We identified active smoking to be associated with adult-onset AD versus controls (adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) = 5.54 [95% Confidence Interval: 1.06-29.01] vs. controls , aOR = 4.03 [1.20-13.45] vs. controls ). Conjunctivitis showed a negative association versus controls (aOR = 0.36 [0.14-0.91]). Food allergy (aOR = 2.93 [1.44-5.96]), maternal food allergy (aOR = 9.43 [1.10-80.95]), palmar hyperlinearity (aOR = 2.11 [1.05-4.25]), and academic background (aOR = 2.14 [1.00-4.54]) increased the odds of childhood-onset AD versus controls. Shared AD-associated factors were maternal AD (4-34x), increased IgE (2-20x), atopic stigmata (2-3x) with varying effect sizes depending on AD onset and control group. Patients with adult-compared to childhood-onset had doubled odds of allergic rhinitis (aOR = 2.15 [1.12-4.13]), but reduced odds to feature multiple (3-4) atopic comorbidities (aOR = 0.34 [0.14-0.84]). Adult-onset AD, particularly onset ≥61 years, grouped mainly in clusters with low contributions of personal and familial atopy and high frequencies of physical inactivity, childhood-onset AD, particularly infant-onset, mainly in "high-atopic"-clusters.
Conclusions: The identified associated factors suggest partly varying endo- and exogeneous mechanisms underlying adult-onset versus childhood-onset AD. Our findings might contribute to better assessment of the individual risk to develop AD throughout life and encourage prevention by non-smoking and physical activity as modifiable lifestyle factors
