    A Comparative Study on the Solution Techniques for Fiber Orientation in Two-Dimensional Converging and Diverging Flows

    The two-dimensional steady flow of both infinite and finite aspect ratio (length to diameter ratio) fibers suspended in a Newtonian fluid is investigated numeri cally. Forty-five-degree convergent and divergent channel geometries are considered for the analysis. Due to symmetry, only half the channel geometry is considered and the ori entation field is assumed to be planar. The analysis is carried out for the creeping flows where the inertia terms are neglected. Numerical grid generation is used to generate the mesh, and the transformed governing equations in terms of the stream function are solved in the computational domain using a finite difference scheme. In this study, several solu tion strategies for solving the orientation field are investigated. The orientation of individ ual fibers are assumed to be governed by Jeffery's equation. The orientation field, which can be expressed in different forms (i.e., a unit vector, tensorial quantities, or an orienta tion distribution function), is specified by solving the orientation equations along particle paths. A tracing technique is implemented to obtain these particle paths for each grid point in the flow domain. The solution of the orientation field is obtained by using two basic techniques. First, a large number of fibers are considered, and by using analytical expres sions developed to describe the orientation state of one fiber, a statistical orientation distri bution function is generated. Second, tensorial quantities (both second- and fourth-order orientation tensors) are employed to solve for the orientation field. In order to overcome the closure problem occurring in the resulting orientation equations, quadratic approxima tions are used. Maximum orientation angles are reported from both the techniques, and their accuracies are investigated. The maximum orientation angles (i.e., preferred orienta tion) obtained from the second- and fourth-order tensorial solutions are observed to be identical. On the other hand, the degree of fiber alignments that are specified by the indi vidual tensor components differ considerably. Comparison of the solution techniques shows that the accuracy of the preferred angle obtained from statistical solution is depen dent on the number of fibers considered.     A thermodynamic framework to develop rate-type models for fluids without instantaneous elasticity

    In this paper, we apply the thermodynamic framework recently put into place by Rajagopal and co-workers, to develop rate-type models for viscoelastic fluids which do not possess instantaneous elasticity. To illustrate the capabilities of such models we make a specific choice for the specific Helmholtz potential and the rate of dissipation and consider the creep and stress relaxation response associated with the model. Given specific forms for the Helmholtz potential and the rate of dissipation, the rate of dissipation is maximized with the constraint that the difference between the stress power and the rate of change of Helmholtz potential is equal to the rate of dissipation and any other constraint that may be applicable such as incompressibility. We show that the model that is developed exhibits fluid-like characteristics and is incapable of instantaneous elastic response. It also includes Maxwell-like and Kelvin-Voigt-like viscoelastic materials (when certain material moduli take special values).Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    The Bray-Humayun model for phase ordering dynamics is solved numerically in one and two space dimensions with conserved and non conserved order parameter. The scaling properties are analysed in detail finding the crossover from multiscaling to standard scaling in the conserved case. Both in the nonconserved case and in the conserved case when standard scaling holds the novel feature of an exponential tail in the scaling function is found.Comment: 21 pages, 10 Postscript figure

    Surface tension of the isotropic-nematic interface

    We present the first calculations of the pressure tensor profile in the vicinity of the planar interface between isotropic liquid and nematic liquid crystal, using Onsager's density functional theory and computer simulation. When the liquid crystal director is aligned parallel to the interface, the situation of lowest free energy, there is a large tension on the nematic side of the interface and a small compressive region on the isotropic side. By contrast, for perpendicular alignment, the tension is on the isotropic side. There is excellent agreement between theory and simulation both in the forms of the pressure tensor profiles, and the values of the surface tension.Comment: Minor changes; to appear in Phys. Rev.

    Microbiological assessments in a cut flower crop polytunnel field trial adopting soil covering and microbiocides for Fusarium wilt suppression

    Publication history: Published online - 4 September 2020Cut flower Matthiola incana were raised by local commercial cultivators in a polytunnel. The field soil beds were either left uncovered as normal or covered with polythene sheets (except a hole for plant plug space). Average temperatures in the top 5 cm soil under cover dropped from 28 oC to 18 oC compared to its spiking up to 37 oC in uncovered counterparts. Microbiological analyses indicated that soil covering induced two log10 folds reduction of the wilt causal fungi Fusarium oxysporum and concomitantly increased one log10 fold wilt antagonistic natural soil inhabiting fungi populations. Standard dip/drench mixtures of commercial and local isolates microbiocides (bacteria) applied to M. incana plug roots improved plant health assessed by visible scores of the level of damage or wilt symptoms under soil covered treatments. Scanning electron microscopy, cultural and 16S rRNA PCR analyses revealed potent antifungal bacteria attached to the hyphal surfaces of F. oxysporum as ectosymbionts that may have implications for virulence regulation and host plants’ wilt disease control.     Dynamic characteristics of sulfur, iron and phosphorus in coastal polluted sediments, north China

    The cycling of sulfur (S), iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) in sediments and pore water can impact the water quality of overlying water. In a heavily polluted river estuary (Yantai, China), vertical profiles of fluxes of dissolved sulfide, Fe2+ and dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in sediment pore water were investigated by the Diffusive Gradients in Thin films technique (DGT). Vertical fluxes of S, Fe, P in intertidal sediment showed the availability of DRP increased while the sulfide decreased with depth in surface sediment, indicating that sulfide accumulation could enhance P release in anoxic sediment. In sites with contrasting salinity, the relative dominance of iron and sulfate reduction was different, with iron reduction dominant over sulfate reduction in the upper sediment at an intertidal site but the reverse true in a freshwater site, with the other process dominating at depth in each case.     Validation of high performance liquid chromatographic and spectrophotometric methods for the determination of the antiparkinson agent pramipexole dihydrochloride monohydrate in pharmaceutical products

    abstract The antiparkinson agent pramipexole dihydrochloride monohydrate was quantified in pharmaceutical products by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and derivative spectrophotometry. The first method was based on HPLC using tamsulosin HCl as an internal standard. In this method, chromatographic separation was achieved using a LiChrospher 60 RP column at 25°C, with a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min at 263 nm. The eluent comprised 0.01 mol/L ammonium acetate (pH 4.4) and acetonitrile (35:65 by volume). The linearity range was found to be 10.0-30.0 µg/mL with a mean recovery of 100.5 ± 1.10. The limit of detection (8 ng/mL) and limit of quantification (50 ng/mL) were calculated. In the second method, the first derivative spectrophotometric technique for the determination of pramipexole dihydrochloride monohydrate was performed by measuring the amplitude at 249 and 280 nm. In the first derivative technique, the absorbance and concentration plot was rectilinear over the 5.0-35.0 µg/mL range with a lower detection limit of 1.5 ng/mL and quantification limit of 4.5 ng/mL. The typical excipients included in the pharmaceutical product do not interfere with the selectivity of either method. The developed methods were validated for robustness, selectivity, specificity, linearity, precision, and accuracy as per the ICH and FDA guidelines (ICH Q2B, 1996; FDA,2000). In conclusion, the developed methods were successful in determining the quantity of the antiparkinson agent pramipexole dihydrochloride monohydrate in pharmaceutical products. The RSD values for the pharmaceutical product used in this study were found to be 0.97% for the HPLC method and 0.00% for the first derivative spectrophotometric method

    A Model for the Development of the Rhizobial and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbioses in Legumes and Its Use to Understand the Roles of Ethylene in the Establishment of these two Symbioses

    We propose a model depicting the development of nodulation and arbuscular mycorrhizae. Both processes are dissected into many steps, using Pisum sativum L. nodulation mutants as a guideline. For nodulation, we distinguish two main developmental programs, one epidermal and one cortical. Whereas Nod factors alone affect the cortical program, bacteria are required to trigger the epidermal events. We propose that the two programs of the rhizobial symbiosis evolved separately and that, over time, they came to function together. The distinction between these two programs does not exist for arbuscular mycorrhizae development despite events occurring in both root tissues. Mutations that affect both symbioses are restricted to the epidermal program. We propose here sites of action and potential roles for ethylene during the formation of the two symbioses with a specific hypothesis for nodule organogenesis. Assuming the epidermis does not make ethylene, the microsymbionts probably first encounter a regulatory level of ethylene at the epidermis–outermost cortical cell layer interface. Depending on the hormone concentrations there, infection will either progress or be blocked. In the former case, ethylene affects the cortex cytoskeleton, allowing reorganization that facilitates infection; in the latter case, ethylene acts on several enzymes that interfere with infection thread growth, causing it to abort. Throughout this review, the difficulty of generalizing the roles of ethylene is emphasized and numerous examples are given to demonstrate the diversity that exists in plants
