We present mapping, profiles and photometry for 24 planetary nebulae (PNe) detected in the GLIMPSE 3D mid-infrared (MIR) survey of the Galactic plane. The PNe show many of the properties observed in previous studies of these sources, including evidence for longer wave emission from outside of the ionised zones, a likely consequence of emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) within the nebular photo-dissociation regimes (PDRs). We also note variations in 5.8/4.5 and 8.0/4.5 microns flux ratios with distance from the nuclei; present evidence for enhanced MIR emission in the halos of the sources; and note evidence for variations in colour with nebular evolution.Comment: 35 pages, 28 figures, Accepted for publication in Revista Mexicana de Astronomia y Astrofisica (RevMexAA). 61 pages in arXi

Effects of Corporate Policies and Governance Practices on Ownership Structure: Evidence from Chilean Firms

We analyze the effects of financing policies, dividends, and corporate governance on ownership structure in Chilean companies. We used a sample of 185 companies listed on the Santiago Stock Exchange that answered the NCG 341 survey on Corporate Governance Practices in 2013. The two-limit Tobit regression (TLTR) results show that debt and dividend policies exert a negative effect on controlling shareholder ownership and a positive effect on minority shareholder ownership. The results show that these policies facilitate control over corporate management determined by the interests of controlling shareholders, as well as protect minority shareholders’ rights by complementing their monitoring role. Corporate governance practices have significant effects on the ownership structure of Chilean companies.

Role stress and work engagement as antecedents of job satisfaction in Spanish workers

    Get PDF
Purpose: According to the Job Demands-Resources (JDR) model, engagement and job satisfaction may be produce by two types of working conditions: job demands (i.e. role stress) and job resources (i.e. self-efficacy). This study examines the role of role stress and work engagement as antecedents of job satisfaction in a sample of Spanish workers. Design/methodology/approach: This study comprised a sample of 435 Spanish workers. A cross sectional study was used to examine the relationship between role stress, work engagement and job satisfaction. Data were gathered based on personal administered questionnaires. Findings and Originality/value: Hierarchical multiple regression models have revealed that job satisfaction was significantly predicted by role stress and work engagement. Results support JDR model by showing that positive outcomes, such as job satisfaction can be predicted by motivational process and job demands. Research limitations/implications: The cross-sectional design cannot evidence of causal relationships. This study relies on self-reports, which might increase the risk of common method variance. Practical implications: On a practical level, the JDR model provides a framework for understanding motivating workplaces and engaged and satisfied employees. Originality/value: The JDR model could be useful in designing strategies for which engaged employees may be advantageous to improving the quality of services, while at the same time increasing employees’ job satisfaction and well-being.Peer Reviewe

Radiation Induced Reactions of Succinic Acid in Aqueous Solution: An Agent-Based Model

An approach to studying the formation of critical bio-organic compounds in the early Earth is to simulate in the laboratory possible processes that may occur in primitive scenarios. In this context, it can be studied the evolution of succinic acid in an aqueous media exposed to gamma radiation, as starting material produced more complex prebiotic molecules. To describe the products generated by the interaction of the different elements under radiation, there is a mathematical model that considers chemical reactions as nonlinear ordinary differential equations based on the mass balance of all the species, that has been implemented here by an agent-based model. In this simulation, each chemical species involved is considered as an agent that can interact with other species with known reaction rates, and the radiation is taken as a factor that promotes product formation. The results from the agentbased model are compared with the molar concentrations of succinic acid, and its products obtained in the lab. Simulation shows the exponential decomposition of succinic acid due to gamma radiation at room temperature in agreement with the laboratory model

Agent-based Model of Oxidation Reactions of Ferrous Ions

Molecules in comets are formed through chemical oxidation reactions induced by radiation. Thesereactions can be simulated in laboratory experiments applying gamma radiation to samples at low temperatures. The kinetics of the induced reactions can be modeled by a system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations describing the mass balance of all of the species involved. However, finding a traditional solution to this system is difficult because of the large number of reactions involved, the need to solve all of the equations simultaneously, and the strong dependence on the initial conditions due to the non-linear character of the equations. For each species, the mass-balance equation includes all of the reaction rates leading to production (source terms) and to destruction (sink terms). In this sense, each equation is analogous to the prey-predator model, with the sink terms consider to be the “prey” and the source terms as the “predators”. Due to this, we can use an agent-based model to follow the kinetics of the chemical reactions. In this paper, we present a code in Python for an agent-based model of the chemical oxidation of ferrous ions (Fe2+) induced by gamma radiation and in the presence of molecular oxygen. We compare the results that this code produces for molar concentrations of Fe3+over time with those obtained in the laboratory
