Professors on the Board: Do They Contribute to Society Outside the Classroom?
According to our data, 38.5 % of S&P 1500 firms have at least one professor on their boards. Given the lack of research examining the roles and effects of academic faculty as members of boards of directors (professorâdirectors) on corporate outcomes, this study investigates whether firms with professorâdirectors are more likely to exhibit higher corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance ratings. Results indicate that firms with professorâdirectors do exhibit higher CSR performance ratings than those without. However, the influence of professorâdirectors on firm CSR performance ratings depends on their academic backgroundâthe positive association between the presence of professorâdirectors and firm CSR performance ratings is significant only when their academic background is specialized (e.g., science, engineering, and medicine). Seeking legitimacy through CSR: Institutional Pressures and Corporate Responses of Multinationals in Sri Lanka
Arguably, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of multinational enterprises (MNEs) are influenced by a wide range of both internal and external factors. Perhaps most critical among the exogenous forces operating on MNEs are those exerted by state and other key institutional actors in host countries. Crucially, academic research conducted to date offers little data about how MNEs use their CSR activities to strategically manage their relationship with those actors in order to gain legitimisation advantages in host countries. This paper addresses that gap by exploring interactions between external institutional pressures and firm-level CSR activities, which take the form of community initiatives, to examine how MNEs develop their legitimacy-seeking policies and practices. In focusing on a developing country, Sri Lanka, this paper provides valuable insights into how MNEs instrumentally utilise community initiatives in a country where relationship-building with governmental and other powerful non-governmental actors can be vitally important for the long-term viability of the business. Drawing on neo-institutional theory and CSR literature, this paper examines and contributes to the embryonic but emerging debate about the instrumental and political implications of CSR. The evidence presented and discussed here reveals the extent to which, and the reasons why, MNEs engage in complex legitimacy-seeking relationships with Sri Lankan institutions
Corporate philanthropy, political influence, and health policy
Background The Framework Convention of Tobacco Control (FCTC) provides a basis for nation states to limit the political effects of tobacco industry philanthropy, yet progress in this area is limited. This paper aims to integrate the findings of previous studies on tobacco industry philanthropy with a new analysis of British American Tobacco's (BAT) record of charitable giving to develop a general model of corporate political philanthropy that can be used to facilitate implementation of the FCTC. Method Analysis of previously confidential industry documents, BAT social and stakeholder dialogue reports, and existing tobacco industry document studies on philanthropy. Results The analysis identified six broad ways in which tobacco companies have used philanthropy politically: developing constituencies to build support for policy positions and generate third party advocacy; weakening opposing political constituencies; facilitating access and building relationships with policymakers; creating direct leverage with policymakers by providing financial subsidies to specific projects; enhancing the donor's status as a source of credible information; and shaping the tobacco control agenda by shifting thinking on the importance of regulating the market environment for tobacco and the relative risks of smoking for population health. Contemporary BAT social and stakeholder reports contain numerous examples of charitable donations that are likely to be designed to shape the tobacco control agenda, secure access and build constituencies. Conclusions and Recommendations Tobacco companies' political use of charitable donations underlines the need for tobacco industry philanthropy to be restricted via full implementation of Articles 5.3 and 13 of the FCTC. The model of tobacco industry philanthropy developed in this study can be used by public health advocates to press for implementation of the FCTC and provides a basis for analysing the political effects of charitable giving in other industry sectors which have an impact on public health such as alcohol and food
Systematic review: Effects, design choices, and context of pay-for-performance in health care
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pay-for-performance (P4P) is one of the primary tools used to support healthcare delivery reform. Substantial heterogeneity exists in the development and implementation of P4P in health care and its effects. This paper summarizes evidence, obtained from studies published between January 1990 and July 2009, concerning P4P effects, as well as evidence on the impact of design choices and contextual mediators on these effects. Effect domains include clinical effectiveness, access and equity, coordination and continuity, patient-centeredness, and cost-effectiveness.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The systematic review made use of electronic database searching, reference screening, forward citation tracking and expert consultation. The following databases were searched: Cochrane Library, EconLit, Embase, Medline, PsychINFO, and Web of Science. Studies that evaluate P4P effects in primary care or acute hospital care medicine were included. Papers concerning other target groups or settings, having no empirical evaluation design or not complying with the P4P definition were excluded. According to study design nine validated quality appraisal tools and reporting statements were applied. Data were extracted and summarized into evidence tables independently by two reviewers.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>One hundred twenty-eight evaluation studies provide a large body of evidence -to be interpreted with caution- concerning the effects of P4P on clinical effectiveness and equity of care. However, less evidence on the impact on coordination, continuity, patient-centeredness and cost-effectiveness was found. P4P effects can be judged to be encouraging or disappointing, depending on the primary mission of the P4P program: supporting minimal quality standards and/or boosting quality improvement. Moreover, the effects of P4P interventions varied according to design choices and characteristics of the context in which it was introduced.</p> <p>Future P4P programs should (1) select and define P4P targets on the basis of baseline room for improvement, (2) make use of process and (intermediary) outcome indicators as target measures, (3) involve stakeholders and communicate information about the programs thoroughly and directly, (4) implement a uniform P4P design across payers, (5) focus on both quality improvement and achievement, and (6) distribute incentives to the individual and/or team level.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>P4P programs result in the full spectrum of possible effects for specific targets, from absent or negligible to strongly beneficial. Based on the evidence the review has provided further indications on how effect findings are likely to relate to P4P design choices and context. The provided best practice hypotheses should be tested in future research.</p
A comprehensive model of factors associated with capability to âlive wellâ for family caregivers of people living with mild-to-moderate dementia: findings from the IDEAL study
© 2018 The Author(s). Introduction: Understanding key influences on outcomes for caregivers of people with dementia is hampered by inconsistent conceptualisation and measurement of outcomes and limited evidence about the relative impact of different variables. We aimed to address these issues.
Method: We analysed data from 1283 caregivers of community-dwelling individuals with mild-to-moderate dementia in the IDEAL cohort. We generated a âliving wellâ latent factor from measures of quality of life, satisfaction with life and well-being. We used structural equation modelling to derive latent variables for seven domains reflecting caregiversâ perceptions of their personal resources and experiences, and to examine the associations with caregiversâ perceptions of their capability to âlive wellâ.
Results: The domain of Psychological characteristics and psychological health was most strongly related to living well (2.53; 95% CI 2.08, 2.97), followed by Physical fitness and physical health (1.48, 95% CI 1.04, 1.91) and Experiencing caregiving (1.34; 95% CI 0.99, 1.70). Capitals, assets and resources (0.68, 95% CI 0.35, 1.00) and Relationship with the person with dementia (-0.22, 95% CI -0.41, -0.03) had smaller, significant associations. Social location (0.28, 95% CI -0.33, 0.89) and Managing everyday life with dementia (0.06, 95% CI -0.15, 0.28) were not significantly associated with living well.
Discussion: These findings demonstrate the importance of supporting caregiversâ psychological and physical health and their ability to develop and maintain positive coping strategies, as well as enabling them to maintain vital social capitals, assets and resources.Economic and Social Research Council (UK) and the National Institute for Health Research (UK
