    Vertico. IV. Environmental effects on the gas distribution and star formation efficiency of virgo cluster spirals

    We measure the molecular-to-atomic gas ratio, R mol, and the star formation rate (SFR) per unit molecular gas mass, SFEmol, in 38 nearby galaxies selected from the Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) survey. We stack ALMA 12CO (J = 2−1) spectra coherently using H i velocities from the VIVA survey to detect faint CO emission out to galactocentric radii r gal ∌ 1.2 r 25. We determine the scale lengths for the molecular and stellar components, finding a ∌3:5 relation compared to ∌1:1 in field galaxies, indicating that the CO emission is more centrally concentrated than the stars. We compute R mol as a function of different physical quantities. While the spatially resolved R mol on average decreases with increasing radius, we find that the mean molecular-to-atomic gas ratio within the stellar effective radius R e , R mol(r < R e ), shows a systematic increase with the level of H i, truncation and/or asymmetry (HI perturbation).     A versatile characterization of poly(N-isopropylacrylamideco- N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide) hydrogels for composition, mechanical strength, and rheology

    Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N"-methylene-bisacrylamide) (P(NIPAAm-co-MBA)) hydrogels were prepared in water using redox initiator. The copolymer composition at high conversion (> 95%) was determined indirectly by HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) analysis of the leaching water and directly by solid state 13C CP MAS NMR (cross polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy of the dried gels, and was found to be close to that of the feed. The effect of cross-linker (MBA) content in the copolymer was investigated in the concentration range of 1.1–9.1 mol% (R:90–10; R = mol NIPAAm/mol MBA) on the rheological behaviour and mechanical strength of the hydrogels. Both storage and loss modulus decreased with decreasing cross-linker content as revealed by dynamic rheometry. Gels R70 and R90 with very low cross-linker content (1.2–1.5 mol% MBA) have a very loose network structure, which is significantly different from those with higher cross-linker content manifesting in higher difference in storage modulus. The temperature dependence of the damping factor served the most accurate determination of the volume phase transition temperature, which was not affected by the cross-link density in the investigated range of MBA concentration. Gel R10 with highest cross-linker content (9.1 mol% MBA) behaves anomalously due to heterogeneity and the hindered conformation of the side chains of PNIPAAm

    Temperature dependent Raman and x-ray studies of spin-ice pyrochlore Dy2Ti2O7Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and non-magnetic pyrochlore Lu2Ti2O7Lu_2Ti_2O_7

    We present here temperature-dependent Raman, x-ray diffraction and specific heat studies between room temperature and 12 K on single crystals of spin-ice pyrochlore compound Dy2Ti2O7Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and its non-magnetic analogue Lu2Ti2O7Lu_2Ti_2O_7. Raman data show a "new" band not predicted by factor group analysis of Raman-active modes for the pyrochlore structure in Dy2Ti2O7Dy_2Ti_2O_7, appearing below a temperature of Tc=T_c=110 K with a concomitant contraction of the cubic unit cell volume as determined from the powder x-ray diffraction analysis. Low temperature Raman experiments on O18^{18}-isotope substituted Dy2Ti2O7Dy_2Ti_2O_7 confirm the phonon origin of the "new" mode. These findings, absent in Lu2Ti2O7Lu_2Ti_2O_7, suggest that the room temperature cubic lattice of the pyrochlore Dy2Ti2O7Dy_2Ti_2O_7 undergoes a "subtle" structural transformation near TcT_c. We find anomalous \textit{red-shift} of some of the phonon modes in both the Dy2Ti2O7Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and the Lu2Ti2O7Lu_2Ti_2O_7 as the temperature decreases, which is attributed to strong phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures (Accepted for publication in Physical Review B

    How are "teaching the teachers" courses in evidence based medicine evaluated? A systematic review

    Background Teaching of evidence-based medicine (EBM) has become widespread in medical education. Teaching the teachers (TTT) courses address the increased teaching demand and the need to improve effectiveness of EBM teaching. We conducted a systematic review of assessment tools for EBM TTT courses. To summarise and appraise existing assessment methods for teaching the teachers courses in EBM by a systematic review. Methods We searched PubMed, BioMed, EmBase, Cochrane and Eric databases without language restrictions and included articles that assessed its participants. Study selection and data extraction were conducted independently by two reviewers. Results Of 1230 potentially relevant studies, five papers met the selection criteria. There were no specific assessment tools for evaluating effectiveness of EBM TTT courses. Some of the material available might be useful in initiating the development of such an assessment tool. Conclusion There is a need for the development of educationally sound assessment tools for teaching the teachers courses in EBM, without which it would be impossible to ascertain if such courses have the desired effect

    The magnetic hysteresis associated with the magnetization reversal of the free layer in a spin valve is analysed. A model is proposed which assumes a single-domain behavior of the free layer, and a fixed magnetization of the pinned layer. The model is then developed in the framework of the StonerÂżWohlfarth coherent rotation model, where geometrical solutions are obtained by the astroid method. According to the strength of the interlayer exchange coupling, the applied field direction and the anisotropy arrangement of the magnetic layers, a general classification of the hysteresis loops is proposed. Quantitative comparisons with experiments on spin valves (e.g. NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn) are shown
