    The design and evaluation of grazing incidence relay optics

    X-ray astronomy, both solar and celestial, has many needs for high spatial resolution observations which have to be performed with electronic detectors. If the resolution is not to be detector limited, plate scales in excess of 25 microns arc/sec, corresponding to focal lengths greater than 5 m, are required. In situations where the physical size is restricted, the problem can be solved by the use of grazing incidence relay optics. A system was developed which employs externally polished hyperboloid-hyperboloid surfaces to be used in conjunction with a Wolter-Schwarzschild primary. The secondary is located in front of the primary focus and provides a magnification of 4, while the system has a plate scale of 28 microns arc/sec and a length of 1.9 m. The design, tolerance specification, fabrication and performance at visible and X-ray wavelengths of this optical system are described

    Industrial Applications of Auger Surface Analysis

    Scanning Auger microscopy is distinguished by its unique combination of surface selectivity, high spatial resolution, ease of identifying elements and quantifying composition, and ability to distinguish between chemical states. This paper describes several applications of scanning Auger microscopy, emphasizing the range of industrial research activities: 1. Electronic Materials. Contamination in an integrated circuit processing facility was identified and procedures for its removal determined. Causes for the delamination of printed circuit board foils were identified. Superlattice films were characterized and the deposition process evaluated. 2. Tribology. Analysis of surfaces in lubricated sliding contact revealed the effects of con tact kinematics and of molybdenum antifriction additives. 3. Corrosion. Early growth stages of phosphate coatings were found to be associated with a thin phosphate layer, not visible in SEM, interspersed with larger crystals. A corrosion layer on stainless steel/aluminum bimetal trim was shown to contain calcium carbonate and silicate deposits consistent with its galvanic protection mechanism. 4. Catalysis. Oxidation studies of Pd/ Rh alloys revealed varying surface compositions as a function of heat treatment temperature. Several problems commonly encountered in Auger analysis are described and ways of minimizing or estimating their effects are discussed

    Global communication part 1: the use of apparel CAD technology

    Trends needed for improved communication systems, through the development of future computer-aided design technology (CAD) applications, is a theme that has received attention due to its perceived benefits in improving global supply chain efficiencies. This article discusses the developments of both 2D and 3D computer-aided design capabilities, found within global fashion supply chain relationships and environments. Major characteristics identified within the data suggest that CAD/CAM technology appears to be improving; however, evidence also suggest a plateau effect, which is accrediting forced profits towards information technology manufactures, and arguably compromising the industry's competitive advantage. Nevertheless, 2D CAD increases communication speed; whereas 3D human interaction technology is seen to be evolving slowly and questionably with limited success. The article discusses the findings and also presents the issues regarding human interaction; technology education; and individual communication enhancements using technology processes. These are still prevalent topics for the future developments of global strategy and cultural communication amalgamation

    The photoionization dynamics of the three structural isomers of dichloroethene

    Using tunable vacuum-UV radiation from a synchrotron, the threshold photoelectron spectrum, threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence spectrum and ion breakdown diagram of the 1,1, cis-1,2 and trans-1,2 isomers of C2_2H2_2Cl2_2 have been recorded in the range 9-23 eV. The energies of the peaks in the threshold photoelectron spectrum are in good agreement with outer-valence Greens function caculations. The major difference between the isomers, both predicted and observed experimentally is that the F and G states of C2_2H2_2Cl2+_2^+ are approximately degenerate for 1,1 and trans-1,2, but well separated for the cis-1,2 isomer. The ground and low-lying valence states of C2_2H2_2Cl2+_2^+ are bound, with higher-lying states dissociating to C2_2H2_2Cl+^+ or C2_2H2+_2^+. The translational kinetic energy release into C2_2H2_2Cl+^+ + Cl is determined as a function of energy. Isolated-state behaviour for the low-lying electronic states of C2_2H2_2Cl2+_2^+ becomes more statistical as the energy increases

    Observing biogeochemical cycles at global scales with profiling floats and gliders: prospects for a global array

    Chemical and biological sensor technologies have advanced rapidly in the past five years. Sensors that require low power and operate for multiple years are now available for oxygen, nitrate, and a variety of bio-optical properties that serve as proxies for important components of the carbon cycle (e.g., particulate organic carbon). These sensors have all been deployed successfully for long periods, in some cases more than three years, on platforms such as profiling floats or gliders. Technologies for pH, pCO2, and particulate inorganic carbon are maturing rapidly as well. These sensors could serve as the enabling technology for a global biogeochemical observing system that might operate on a scale comparable to the current Argo array. Here, we review the scientific motivation and the prospects for a global observing system for ocean biogeochemistry

    A Mid-Infrared Study of the Class 0 Cluster in LDN 1448

    We present ground-based mid-infrared observations of Class 0 protostars in LDN 1448. Of the five known protostars in this cloud, we detected two, L1448N:A and L1448C, at 12.5, 17.9, 20.8, and 24.5 microns, and a third, L1448 IRS 2, at 24.5 microns. We present high-resolution images of the detected sources, and photometry or upper limits for all five Class 0 sources in this cloud. With these data, we are able to augment existing spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for all five objects and place them on an evolutionary status diagram.Comment: Accepted by the Astronomical Journal; 26 pages, 9 figure

    Giant Molecular Outflows Powered by Protostars in L1448

    We present sensitive, large-scale maps of the CO J=1-0 emission of the L1448 dark cloud. These maps were acquired using the On-The-Fly capability of the NRAO 12-meter telescope. CO outflow activity is seen in L1448 on parsec-scales for the first time. Careful comparison of the spatial and velocity distribution of our high-velocity CO maps with previously published optical and near-infrared images and spectra has led to the identification of six distinct CO outflows. We show the direct link between the heretofore unknown, giant, highly-collimated, protostellar molecular outflows and their previously discovered, distant optical manifestations. The outflows traced by our CO mapping generally reach the projected cloud boundaries. Integrated intensity maps over narrow velocity intervals indicate there is significant overlap of blue- and red-shifted gas, suggesting the outflows are highly inclined with respect to the line-of-sight, although the individual outflow position angles are significantly different. The velocity channel maps also show that the outflows dominate the CO line cores as well as the high-velocity wings. The magnitude of the combined flow momenta, as well as the combined kinetic energy of the flows, are sufficient to disperse the 50 solar mass NH3 cores in which the protostars are currently forming, although some question remains as to the exact processes involved in redirecting the directionality of the outflow momenta to effect the complete dispersal of the parent cloud.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, to be published in the Astronomical Journa

    A Continuous 100-mK Helium-Light Cooling System for MUSCAT on the LMT

    The MUSCAT instrument is a large-format camera planned for installation on the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) in 2018. MUSCAT requires continuous cooling of several large-volume stages to sub-Kelvin temperatures, with the focal plane cooled to 100 mK. Through the use of continuous sorption coolers and a miniature dilution refrigerator, the MUSCAT project can fulfil its cryogenic requirements at a fraction of the cost and space required for conventional dilution systems. Our design is a helium-light system, using a total of only 9 litres of helium-3 across several continuous cooling systems, cooling from 4 K to 100 mK. Here we describe the operation of both the continuous sorption and the miniature dilution refrigerator systems used in this system, along with the overall thermal design and budgeting of MUSCAT. MUSCAT will represent the first deployment of these new technologies in a science-grade instrument and will prove the concept as a viable option for future large-scale experiments such as CMB-S4.Comment: Presented at 17th International Workshop on Low-Temperature Detectors.
