    El informe propone fortalecer la estrategia de acompañamiento social para optimizar su uso para el logro de los objetivos en lo programa que ejecuta el Instituto de Acueductos y Alcantarillados Nacionales (IDAAN), en las comunidades, con problemas de suministro de agua potable y saneamiento. Igualmente proponemos fortalecer la participación comunitaria como medio para satisfacer las necesidades de agua potable, entendiendo el acompañamiento social como una metodología de intervención social. En función de sus objetivos tanto el general como los específicos, la investigación se desarrolló dentro del marco del diseño exploratorio descriptivo. La población del estudio estuvo constituida por el universo de familias de la comunidad de Nueva Esperanza; 63 familias que representaban el total de 315 pobladores al momento de la recolección de los datos. Esta organizado en cinco (5) capítulos. El primero contiene el diseño de la investigación y el marco teórico sobre el tema estudiando. El capítulo segundo trata sobre el agua como un derecho humano y el tercero se centra en conocer más sobre el acompañamiento social y sus variantes. El cuarto capítulo presenta los hallazgos de la investigación de campo. El proceso de recolección de datos se realizó desde varias perspectivas de análisis, entrevista semi-estructurada, grupos de discusión, y testimonios de los pobladores. Los hallazgos fueron presentados en cuadros estadísticos, gráficos, tablas. En cuanto a los testimonios de los pobladores, resulta oportuno mostrar esta experiencia en la que se ha empleado grupos de discusión en la comunidad en donde se pudo observar, interpretar y describir una realidad vista desde varios enfoques, ya que la interacción discursiva entre los participantes facilitó la narración de experiencias personales y la expresión de ideas dando como resultado que el grupo generará sus opiniones con respecto al tema. Estos testimonios transmiten una memoria personal o colectiva que hace referencia a formas de vida de una comunidad. y el quinto y último capítulo contiene lineamientos para la revisión de una propuesta de acompañamiento social desde el IDAAN, que aportaría nuevas formas de fortalecer las capacidades y habilidades de las comunidades donde se realicen proyectos de infraestructura de agua y saneamiento, como actividades, programas comunitarios dirigidos al mejoramiento de la calidad de vida de la población. Esta propuesta se centra en acciones educativas para el desarrollo del potencial y de la oportunidad de aprendizaje de la persona y la comunidad, para recrear y reproducir conocimientos y saberes que permitan el ejercicio de la ciudadanía, generando con ello comunidades autónomas, democráticas y participativas con sentido de pertenencia social e identidad cultural

    Acumulación de Ag, Cu y Ni en sedimentos en una cuenca semiárida como sub-producto de la mina de oro El Triunfo, Baja California Sur, México

    The dispersal of Ag, Cu, and Ni in mine wastes (tailings and ash) was studied from the source of an abandoned gold mine at El Triunfo (Baja California Sur, Mexico) to the adjacent coast of the Pacific Ocean. The highest contamination levels of the studied elements were measured in one sample of the tailings (Ag: 247 mg kg-1; Cu: 1660 mg kg-1; Ni: 111 mg kg-1). Horizontal and vertical distributions of these elements were obtained from the analysis of surface sediments, tailings, a test pit, a sediment core, and dunes. The background levels of these elements were estimated from independent methods. Then, these regional background level calculations were used to determine the normalised enrichment factors (NEFs). Relatively high NEF values (averages of Ag, Cu, and Ni were 24.0, 3.0, and 1.4, respectively) indicated that the area close to the mine waste zone (up to about 18 km from the source area) was moderately to severely polluted. Moderate to null pollution (average NEFs of Ag, Cu, and Ni were 7, 2 and 1, respectively) was interpreted for the area at about 18-49 km from the mine waste zone. Vertical distributions of the elements in sediments of the overbank, the test pit in the mine zone, and the sediment core (at the discharge of the main arroyo Hondo–Las Gallinas–El Carrizal), also revealed enrichment of Ag, Cu, and Ni relative to the surface sediments. This study indicated that historic and contemporary contamination continues to impact the fluvial environment.Se estudió la dispersión de Ag, Cu, y Ni, en desechos mineros (jales y cenizas) desde su origen en la mina de oro abandonada de El Triunfo (Baja California Sur, México) hasta su desembocadura en la costa adyacente al Océano Pacífico. Los mayores niveles de la contaminación de los elementos estudiados se presentan en los jales (Ag: 247 mg kg-1; Cu: 1660 mg kg-1; Ni: 111 mg kg-1). Se obtuvieron distribuciones horizontales y verticales de estos elementos a partir de los análisis de sedimentos superficiales, de deterun jale, de un pozo de ensayo, de un testigo y en las dunas adyacentes a la desembocadura del arroyo. Los niveles de fondo fueron calculados considerando varios métodos independientes. Luego, con estos cálculos de niveles de fondo se determinaron los Factores de Enriquecimiento Normalizados (NEFs). Los valores relativamente altos de NEF (promedios de Ag, Cu and Ni de 24.0, 3.0 y 1.4, respectivamente) indicaron que el área situada cerca de la zona minera (aproximadamente 18 km de los desechos mineros abandonados) se encuentra de moderada a severamente contaminada. Una contaminación moderada a nula (NEFs promedio de Ag, Cu y Ni: 7, 2 y 1, respectivamente) fue determinada en el área comprendida entre los 18 y los 49 km medidos desde el distrito minero. Las distribuciones verticales de los elementos en los sedimentos de los jales y el pozo de ensayo en la zona minera, así como en el testigo analizado en la desembocadura del arroyo principal (Arroyo Hondo – Las Gallinas – El Carrizal), muestran mayor enriquecimiento de Ag, Cu y Ni, que los sedimentos superficiales adyacentes.     Artículo científicoQuince (Cydonia oblonga) is a non-traditional fruit tree found in Costa Rica that has therapeutic and nutritional properties; however its slow growth and root formation prevents the production of a homogeneous population when using conventional farming techniques. Hence, the aim of this research project was to generate uniform plant material in a reduced time span using a temporary immersion bioreactor system (RITAS ®). A semisolid rooting MS culture medium supplemented with 0.1 mg L-1 NAA; 0.3 mg L-1 IBA and 3% sucrose (pH 6.5), developed in the Centro de Investigación en Biotecnología (CIB), Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica (ITCR), in Cartago, was used as a reference medium. Four different variations in the sucrose concentration (1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%) were performed in liquid medium. Each trial was evaluated with in vitro plants which had been previously exposed to the culture medium of the corresponding treatments, in a stationary mode and for a 15 day long period, and with in vitro plants without any previous treatment (a total of eight treatments). The comparison of the root formation percentages evidenced the clear effect of sucrose concentration used, with the best results obtained when using the 2% sucrose trial with no pre-treatment (73.3%). The in vitro plants were acclimated in cylinders made out of peat, have previously been disinfected with fungicide, and placed in a humidity chamber at a 20.5°C average temperature and a 75,5% relative humidity for the establishment of weekly fertilizing cycles. The acclimation process generated an 80% survival rate, since several seedlings experienced stem strangulation caused by a fungal attack. The conidiophores identified through optical and scanning electron microscopy evidenced the presence of Cladosporium spp., which was controlled with carbendazim and iprodione fungicides

    A horizon scan exercise for aquatic invasive alien species in Iberian inland waters

    As the number of introduced species keeps increasing unabatedly, identifying and prioritising current and potential Invasive Alien Species (IAS) has become essential to manage them. Horizon Scanning (HS), defined as an exploration of potential threats, is considered a fundamental component of IAS management. By combining scientific knowledge on taxa with expert opinion, we identified the most relevant aquatic IAS in the Iberian Peninsula, i.e., those with the greatest geographic extent (or probability of introduction), severe ecological, economic and human health impacts, greatest difficulty and acceptability of management. We highlighted the 126 most relevant IAS already present in Iberian inland waters (i.e., Concern list) and 89 with a high probability of being introduced in the near future (i.e., Alert list), of which 24 and 10 IAS, respectively, were considered as a management priority after receiving the highest scores in the expert assessment (i.e., top-ranked IAS). In both lists, aquatic IAS belonging to the four thematic groups (plants, freshwater invertebrates, estuarine invertebrates, and vertebrates) were identified as having been introduced through various pathways from different regions of the world and classified according to their main functional feeding groups. Also, the latest update of the list of IAS of Union concern pursuant to Regulation (EU) No 1143/2014 includes only 12 top-ranked IAS identified for the Iberian Peninsula, while the national lists incorporate the vast majority of them. This fact underlines the great importance of taxa prioritisation exercises at biogeographical scales as a step prior to risk analyses and their inclusion in national lists. This HS provides a robust assessment and a cost-effective strategy for decision-makers and stakeholders to prioritise the use of limited resources for IAS prevention and management. Although applied at a transnational level in a European biodiversity hotspot, this approach is designed for potential application at any geographical or administrative scale, including the continental one

    Differential association between S100A4 levels and insulin resistance in prepubertal children and adult subjects with clinically severe obesity

    Objectives: S100A4 has been recently identified as an adipokine associated with insulin resistance (IR) in adult subjects with obesity. However, no data about its levels in children with obesity and only a few approaches regarding its potential mechanism of action have been reported. To obtain a deeper understanding of the role of S100A4 in obesity, (a) S100A4 levels were measured in prepubertal children and adult subjects with and without obesity and studied the relationship with IR and (b) the effects of S100A4 in cultured human adipocytes and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) were determined. Methods: Sixty-five children (50 with obesity, age 9.0 ±1.1 years and 15 normal weight, age 8.4 ±0.8 years) and fifty-nine adults (43 with severe obesity, age 46 ±11 years and 16 normal weight, age 45 ±9 years) were included. Blood from children and adults and adipose tissue samples from adults were obtained and analysed. Human adipocytes and VSMC were incubated with S100A4 to evaluate their response to this adipokine. Results: Circulating S100A4 levels were increased in both children (P =.002) and adults (P <.001) with obesity compared with their normal-weight controls. In subjects with obesity, S100A4 levels were associated with homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in adults (βstd =.42, P =.008) but not in children (βstd =.12, P =.356). Human adipocytes were not sensitive to S100A4, while incubation with this adipokine significantly reduced inflammatory markers in VSMC. Conclusions: Our human data demonstrate that higher S100A4 levels are a marker of IR in adults with obesity but not in prepubertal children. Furthermore, the in vitro results suggest that S100A4 might exert an anti-inflammatory effect. Further studies will be necessary to determine whether S100A4 can be a therapeutic target for obesity

    Black list and Alert list of the Aquatic Invasive Alien Species in the Iberian Peninsula: an action of the LIFE INVASAQUA

    Resumen del trabajo presentado en VI Congreso Nacional sobre Especies Exóticas Invasoras y I Congreso Ibérico sobre EEI (EEI 2022) celebrado en Navarra del 20 al 23 de abril de 2022.One of the objectives of LIFE INVASQUA project is to develop tools that will be more efficient the Early Warning and Rapid Response (EWRR) framework for Invasive Alien Species in the Iberian Peninsula. Horizon scanning for high-risk IAS is basic in implementing measures to reduce new invasions, developing Alert lists, and to focus effort in the species already established, for instance making a Black list. We developed a trans national horizon scanning exercise focused on inland waters of Spain and Portugal in order to provide a prioritized lists (Black list and Alert list) of aquatic IAS that may pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems and socio economic sectors in the future. We followed a step approach of existing information about IAS (Plants, Freshwater Invertebrates, Estuarine Invertebrates and Vertebrates; 127 established taxa in Black list; 90 non established taxa in Alert list) combining with an expert scoring of prioritized taxa. IAS established in the Iberian aquatic system consistently highlighted as the worst included vertebrates (e.g. Cyprinus carpio, Gambusia holbrooki, Silurus glanis), freshwater and estuarine invertebrates (e.g. Procambarus clarkii, Dreissena polymorpha, Pacifastacus leniusculus, Ficopomatus enigmaticus, Callinectes sapidus, Corbicula fluminea) and plants (e.g. Eichhornia crassipes, Azolla filiculoides, Ludwigia grandiflora). Amongst taxa not yet established (Alert list), expert pointed to Perna viridis, Hydroides dirampha, Dreissena bugensis, Procambarus fallax f. virginallis, Perccottus glenii with higher risk of invasion, ecological and socioeconomic impacts. Over 20.6% of the taxa in the preliminary black list received no votes (no prioritization) by experts, 17.8% in the innitial alert list. Our horizon scanning approach is inclusive of all-taxa, prioritizes both established and emerging biological threats across trans-national scales, and considers not only the ecological impact, but also potential direct economic consequences as well as the manageability of invasive species.This work received funds from the LIFE Programme (LIFE17 GIE/ES/000515)

    Phosphoproteomic analysis of neoadjuvant breast cancer suggests that increased sensitivity to paclitaxel is driven by CDK4 and filamin A

    Precision oncology research is challenging outside the contexts of oncogenic addiction and/or targeted therapies. We previously showed that phosphoproteomics is a powerful approach to reveal patient subsets of interest characterized by the activity of a few kinases where the underlying genomics is complex. Here, we conduct a phosphoproteomic screening of samples from HER2-negative female breast cancer receiving neoadjuvant paclitaxel (N = 130), aiming to find candidate biomarkers of paclitaxel sensitivity. Filtering 11 candidate biomarkers through 2 independent patient sets (N= 218) allowed the identification of a subgroup of patients characterized by high levels of CDK4 and filamin-A who had a 90% chance of achieving a pCR in response to paclitaxel. Mechanistically, CDK4 regulates filamin-A transcription, which in turn forms a complex with tubulin and CLIP-170, which elicits increased binding of paclitaxel to microtubules, microtubule acetylation and stabilization, and mitotic catastrophe. Thus, phosphoproteomics allows the identification of explainable factors for predicting response to paclitaxel
