    The thermodynamics of collapsing molecular cloud cores using smoothed particle hydrodynamics with radiative transfer

    We present the results of a series of calculations studying the collapse of molecular cloud cores performed using a three-dimensional smoothed particle hydr odynamics code with radiative transfer in the flux-limited diffusion approximation. The opacities and specific heat capacities are identical for each calculation. However, we find that the temperature evolution during the simulations varies significantly when starting from different initial conditions. Even spherically-symmetric clouds with different initial densities show markedly different development. We conclude that simple barotropic equations of state like those used in some previous calculations provide at best a crude approximation to the thermal behaviour of the gas.     Buffet characteristics of the F-8 supercritical wing airplane

    The buffet characteristics of the F-8 supercritical wing airplane were investigated. Wing structural response was used to determine the buffet characteristics of the wing and these characteristics are compared with wind tunnel model data and the wing flow characteristics at transonic speeds. The wingtip accelerometer was used to determine the buffet onset boundary and to measure the buffet intensity characteristics of the airplane. The effects of moderate trailing edge flap deflections on the buffet onset boundary are presented. The supercritical wing flow characteristics were determined from wind tunnel and flight static pressure measurements and from a dynamic pressure sensor mounted on the flight test airplane in the vicinity of the shock wave that formed on the upper surface of the wing at transonic speeds. The comparison of the airplane's structural response data to the supercritical flow characteristics includes the effects of a leading edge vortex generator

    Non-adjacent dependency learning in infancy, and its link to language development

    To acquire language, infants must learn how to identify words and linguistic structure in speech. Statistical learning has been suggested to assist both of these tasks. However, infants’ capacity to use statistics to discover words and structure together remains unclear. Further, it is not yet known how infants’ statistical learning ability relates to their language development. We trained 17-month-old infants on an artificial language comprising non-adjacent dependencies, and examined their looking times on tasks assessing sensitivity to words and structure using an eye-tracked head-turn-preference paradigm. We measured infants’ vocabulary size using a Communicative Development Inventory (CDI) concurrently and at 19, 21, 24, 25, 27, and 30 months to relate performance to language development. Infants could segment the words from speech, demonstrated by a significant difference in looking times to words versus part-words. Infants’ segmentation performance was significantly related to their vocabulary size (receptive and expressive) both currently, and over time (receptive until 24 months, expressive until 30 months), but was not related to the rate of vocabulary growth. The data also suggest infants may have developed sensitivity to generalised structure, indicating similar statistical learning mechanisms may contribute to the discovery of words and structure in speech, but this was not related to vocabulary size

    The human ovarian surface epithelium is an androgen responsive tissue

    The pathogenesis of epithelial ovarian cancer remains unclear. From epidemiological studies raised levels of androgens have been implicated to increase the risk of developing the disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the responses of normal human ovarian surface epithelium to androgens. We have established primary cultures of human ovarian surface epithelium from patients undergoing oophorectomy for benign disease. Total RNA was isolated from these cultures and expression of mRNA encoding for the androgen receptor was demonstrated using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. The presence of androgen receptor in sections of normal ovary was also investigated using an antibody against androgen receptor. The effects of androgens on DNA synthesis and cell death were determined. Eight out of eight (100%) cultures expressed mRNA encoding the androgen receptor. The presence of androgen receptor in ovarian surface epithelium of sections of normal ovaries was demonstrated in all sections. Mibolerone, a synthetic androgen, caused a significant stimulation of DNA synthesis in 5 out of 9 (55%) cultures when used at a concentration of 1 nM. Mibolerone also caused a significant decrease in cell death in 2 out of 5 (40%) cultures tested. We have demonstrated that the ovarian surface epithelium is an androgen responsive tissue and that androgens can cause an increase in proliferation and a decrease in cell death. These findings have important implications for the pathophysiology of ovarian carcinogenesis

    Tidal spin-up of stars in dense stellar cusps around massive black holes

    We show that main-sequence stars in dense stellar cusps around massive black holes are likely to rotate at a significant fraction of the centrifugal breakup velocity due to spin-up by hyperbolic tidal encounters. We use realistic stellar structure models to calculate analytically the tidal spin-up in soft encounters, and extrapolate these results to close and penetrating collisions using smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. We find that the spin-up falls off only slowly with distance from the black hole because the increased tidal coupling in slower collisions at larger distances compensates for the decrease in the stellar density. We apply our results to the stars near the massive black hole in the Galactic Center. Over their lifetime, ~1 Msol main sequence stars in the inner 0.3 pc of the Galactic Center are spun-up on average to ~10%--30% of the centrifugal breakup limit. Such rotation is ~20--60 times higher than is usual for such stars and may affect their subsequent evolution and their observed properties.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures. Submitted to Ap

    A protein microarray assay for serological determination of antigen-specific antibody responses following Clostridium difficile infection

    We provide a detailed overview of a novel high-throughput protein microarray assay for the determination of anti-C. difficile antibody levels in human sera and in separate preparations of polyclonal IVIg. The protocol describes the methodological steps involved in sample preparation, printing of arrays, assay procedure and data analysis. In addition, this protocol could be further developed to incorporate diverse clinical samples including plasma and cell culture supernatants. Herein, a combination of isotype (IgG, IgA IgM), subclass (IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4, IgA1, IgA2), and strain-specific antibodies to highly purified whole C. difficile toxins A and B (toxinotype 0, strain VPI 10463, ribotype 087), toxin B from a C. difficile toxin-B-only expressing strain (CCUG 20309), precursor form of B fragment of binary toxin, pCDTb, ribotype-specific whole surface layer proteins (SLPs; 001, 002, 027) and control proteins (Tetanus toxoid and Candida albicans) were determined by protein microarray. Microarrays were probed with sera from individuals with C. difficile infection (CDI), cystic fibrosis (CF) without diarrhea, healthy controls and individuals pre- and post-IVIg therapy for treatment of CDI, combined immunodeficiency disorder and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculopathy. Significant differences in toxin neutralization efficacies and multi-isotype specific antibody levels were seen between patient groups, commercial preparations of IVIg and sera before and following IVIg administration. A significant correlation was observed between microarray and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for antitoxin IgG levels in serum samples. These results suggest that microarray could become a promising tool for profiling antibody responses to C. difficile antigens in vaccinated or infected humans. With further refinement of antigen panels and a reduction in production costs, it is anticipated that microarray technology may help optimize and select the most clinically useful immunotherapies for C. difficile infection in a patient-specific manner

    Numerical Simulations of Highly Porous Dust Aggregates in the Low-Velocity Collision Regime

    A highly favoured mechanism of planetesimal formation is collisional growth. Single dust grains, which follow gas flows in the protoplanetary disc, hit each other, stick due to van der Waals forces and form fluffy aggregates up to centimetre size. The mechanism of further growth is unclear since the outcome of aggregate collisions in the relevant velocity and size regime cannot be investigated in the laboratory under protoplanetary disc conditions. Realistic statistics of the result of dust aggregate collisions beyond decimetre size is missing for a deeper understanding of planetary growth. Joining experimental and numerical efforts we want to calibrate and validate a computer program that is capable of a correct simulation of the macroscopic behaviour of highly porous dust aggregates. After testing its numerical limitations thoroughly we will check the program especially for a realistic reproduction of various benchmark experiments. We adopt the smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) numerical scheme with extensions for the simulation of solid bodies and a modified version of the Sirono porosity model. Experimentally measured macroscopic material properties of silica dust are implemented. We calibrate and test for the compressive strength relation and the bulk modulus. SPH has already proven to be a suitable tool to simulate collisions at rather high velocities. In this work we demonstrate that its area of application can not only be extended to low-velocity experiments and collisions. It can also be used to simulate the behaviour of highly porous objects in this velocity regime to a very high accuracy.The result of the calibration process in this work is an SPH code that can be utilised to investigate the collisional outcome of porous dust in the low-velocity regime.Comment: accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic

    An implicit method for radiative transfer with the diffusion approximation in SPH

    An implicit method for radiative transfer in SPH is described. The diffusion approximation is used, and the hydrodynamic calculations are performed by a fully three--dimensional SPH code. Instead of the energy equation of state for an ideal gas, various energy states and the dissociation of hydrogen molecules are considered in the energy calculation for a more realistic temperature and pressure determination. In order to test the implicit code, we have performed non--isothermal collapse simulations of a centrally condensed cloud, and have compared our results with those of finite difference calculations performed by MB93. The results produced by the two completely different numerical methods agree well with each other.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figure

    Developmental telomere attrition predicts impulsive decision-making in adult starlings

    Animals in a poor biological state face reduced life expectancy, and as a consequence should make decisions that prioritize immediate survival and reproduction over long-term benefits. We tested the prediction that if, as has been suggested, developmental telomere attrition is a biomarker of state and future life expectancy, then individuals who have undergone greater developmental telomere attrition should display greater choice impulsivity as adults. We measured impulsive decision-making in a cohort of European starlings ( Sturnus vulgaris ) in which we had previously manipulated developmental telomere attrition by cross-fostering sibling chicks into broods of different sizes. We show that as predicted by state-dependent optimality models, individuals who had sustained greater developmental telomere attrition and who had shorter current telomeres made more impulsive foraging decisions as adults, valuing smaller, sooner food rewards more highly than birds with less attrition and longer telomeres. Our findings shed light on the biological embedding of early adversity and support a functional explanation for its consequences that could be applicable to other species, including humans. </jats:p

    A Candidate Protoplanet in the Taurus Star Forming Region

    HST/NICMOS images of the class I protostar TMR-1 (IRAS04361+2547) reveal a faint companion with 10.0" = 1400 AU projected separation. The central protostar is itself resolved as a close binary with 0.31" = 42 AU separation, surrounded by circumstellar reflection nebulosity. A long narrow filament seems to connect the protobinary to the faint companion TMR-1C, suggesting a physical association. If the sources are physically related then we hypothesize that TMR-1C has been ejected by the protobinary.
