Anomalous circular polarization profiles in the He I 1083.0 nm multiplet from solar spicules
We report Stokes vector observations of solar spicules and a prominence in
the He I 1083 nm multiplet carried out with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter.
The observations show linear polarization profiles that are produced by
scattering processes in the presence of a magnetic field. After a careful data
reduction, we demonstrate the existence of extremely asymmetric Stokes V
profiles in the spicular material that we are able to model with two magnetic
components along the line of sight, and under the presence of atomic
orientation in the energy levels that give rise to the multiplet. We discuss
some possible scenarios that can generate the atomic orientation in spicules.
We stress the importance of spectropolarimetric observations across the limb to
distinguish such signals from observational artifacts.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap
ATIPICIDADES EN UN CASO CON DISPLASIA ARRITMOGÉNICA DEL VENTRÍCULO DERECHO O ENFERMEDAD DE UHL / Report of an atypical case with arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia or Uhl´s anomaly
ResumenLa displasia arritmogénica del ventrículo derecho es una miocardiopatía caracterizada por arritmias ventriculares malignas y anomalías estructurales progresivas, que afectan primariamente al ventrículo derecho. Se presenta por una sustitución progresiva parcial o masiva del miocardio por tejido adiposo o fibroadiposo. La enfermedad de Uhl puede ser una manifestación extrema y generalizada de la displasia arritmogénica del ventrículo derecho, trastorno congénito muy poco frecuente con ausencia de miocardio ventricular derecho, por lo que sus paredes son delgadas como el papel. Se comenta el caso de un paciente masculino de 56 años que presentó pérdida de conocimiento y se le realizó el diagnóstico clínico y ecocardiográfico. Se discuten las características clínicas, el diagnóstico y la conducta a seguir ante esta cardiopatía potencialmente letal en pacientes que sufren síncope, taquicardia ventricular o parada cardíaca. / AbstractArrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia is a cardiomyopathy characterized by malignant ventricular arrhythmias and progressive structural abnormalities, affecting primarily the right ventricle. It appears due to a partial or massive progressive replacement of the myocardium by fibroadipose or adipose tissue. Uhl's disease may be an extreme and widespread manifestation of arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, a rare congenital disorder with absence of right ventricular myocardium, so that its walls are paper thin. The case of a 56 year old male patient who had loss of consciousness and underwent clinical and echocardiographic diagnosis is presented. The clinical features, diagnosis and action to take against this potentially fatal heart disease in patients with syncope, ventricular tachycardia or cardiac arrest are discussed
Agroecological analysis of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) crops in orchards in a Mediterranean environment
If adaptability is defined as the ability of a crop (or variety) to respond positively to changes in agricultural conditions, the purpose of this study was to explore the adaptability and relative influence of environmental factors on Cucumber Sativus L. to a specific Mediterranean environmental and agroecological site: Huete (Cuenca, Central Spain). Cucumber requires high temperatures and soil moisture for a satisfactory yield and maintaining an optimum level of humidity is very favorable, which is easy to achieve for farmers in Huete. Abundant sunshine is needed and this is another reason to cultivate during the summer period; it is estimated that there were between 2700 and 2800 hours of sunshine in the Huete area. The study described here revealed that the soils are poorly developed and evolved, with a simple Ap-C or Ap-Bw-C morphology. The soils are friable, slightly adherent and somewhat dry and hard. A significant feature is the presence of good drainage and appreciable effective depth. Like other crops, cucumber plants are preferably grown on loose, well-drained soils, such as the soils studied here. Huete cucumber seems able to tolerate certain levels of soil salinity when compared to other species. The cucumbers are irrigated with water with moderate electrical conductivity without an appreciable decrease in yield. Small doses of salinity may be one of the factors that leads to the characteristics associated with Huete cucumber, an aspect that would need to be investigated more deeply. Substrate nutrients and moisture management are two major concerns regarding Cucumber Sativus L. crops in Huete. Elemental chemical analysis revealed that strontium abounds and this is attributed to the presence of this element in the gypsums. The results of this study open a new horizon in the study of the aptitude of the land and represent a useful step towards the specific site and, consequently, the sustainable management of land under cucumber cultivation. Comparison of transient horizontal magnetic fields in a plage region and in the quiet Sun
Properties of transient horizontal magnetic fields (THMFs) in both plage and
quiet Sun regions are obtained and compared. Spectro-polarimetric observations
with the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on the Hinode satellite were carried out
with a cadence of about 30 seconds for both plage and quiet regions located
near disk center. We select THMFs that have net linear polarization (LP) higher
than 0.22%, and an area larger than or equal to 3 pixels, and compare their
occurrence rates and distribution of magnetic field azimuth. We obtain
probability density functions (PDFs) of magnetic field strength and inclination
for both regions.The occurrence rate in the plage region is the same as for the
quiet Sun. The vertical magnetic flux in the plage region is ~8 times larger
than in the quiet Sun. There is essentially no preferred orientation for the
THMFs in either region. However, THMFs in the plage region with higher LP have
a preferred direction consistent with that of the plage-region's large-scale
vertical field pattern. PDFs show that there is no difference in the
distribution of field strength of horizontal fields between the quiet Sun and
the plage regions when we avoid the persistent large vertical flux
concentrations for the plage region. The similarity of the PDFs and of the
occurrence rates in plage and quiet regions suggests that a local dynamo
process due to the granular motion may generate THMFs all over the sun. The
preferred orientation for higher LP in the plage indicates that the THMFs are
somewhat influenced by the larger-scale magnetic field pattern of the plage.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, A&A accepte

Compact High-Redshift Galaxies Are the Cores of the Most Massive Present-Day Spheroids
Observations suggest that effective radii of high-z massive spheroids are as
much as a factor ~6 smaller than low-z galaxies of comparable mass. Given the
apparent absence of low-z counterparts, this has often been interpreted as
indicating that the high density, compact red galaxies must be 'puffed up' by
some mechanism. We compare the ensemble of high-z observations with large
samples of well-observed low-z ellipticals. At the same physical radii, the
stellar surface mass densities of low and high-z systems are comparable.
Moreover, the abundance of high surface density material at low redshift is
comparable to or larger than that observed at z>1-2, consistent with the
continuous buildup of spheroids over this time. The entire population of
compact, high-z red galaxies may be the progenitors of the high-density cores
of present-day ellipticals, with no need for a decrease in stellar density from
z=2 to z=0. The primary difference between low and high-z systems is thus the
observed low-density material at large radii in low-z spheroids (rather than
the high-density material in high-z spheroids). Such low-density material may
either (1) assemble at z2.
Mock observations of low-z massive systems show that the high-z observations do
not yet probe sufficiently low surface brightness material to detect the low
surface density 'wings' (if present). Thus, if the high-z galaxies resemble the
most massive systems today, their inferred effective radii could be
under-estimated by factors ~2-4. This difference arises because massive systems
at low redshift are not well-fit by single Sersic profiles. We discuss

Radial Distribution of Near-UV Flux in Disc Galaxies in the range 0<z<1
(Abridged) The goal of this paper is to quantify the changes on the SF
distribution within the disc galaxies in the last ~8 Gyr. We use as a proxy for
the SF radial profile the Near-UV surface brightness distributions, allowing
suitably for extinction. We compare the effective radii (R_eff) and
concentration of the flux distribution in the rest-frame Near-UV for a sample
of 270 galaxies in the range 0<z<1. This radial distribution is compared to
that measured in the rest-frame B-band, which traces older stellar populations.
The analysis is performed using deep, high resolution, multi-band images from
GALEX, SDSS, and HST/ACS - GOODS-South. The relation R_eff(NUV)- M* suffers a
moderate change between z~1 and z~0: at a fixed stellar mass of 1E10 M_sun,
galaxies increase their effective radii by a factor 1.18+/-0.06. Median
profiles in NUV show signs of truncation at R~R_eff, and median colour profiles
(NUV-B) show a minimum (a "bluest" point) also around R~1-1.5 R_eff. The
distributions of NUV flux are more compact at z~1 than nowadays, in terms of
the fraction of flux enclosed in a specific radius (in kpc). Our results
indicate that the SF surface density has decreased dramatically in discs since
z~1, and this decline has been more intense in the central parts (<~R_eff) of
the galaxies. In addition, our data suggest that the bulges/pseudo-bulges have

The hidden HI-massive LIRG HIZOA J0836-43: Inside-out galaxy formation
HIZOA J0836-43 is an extreme gas-rich (=7.5\times10^{10}
M_{\sun}) disk galaxy which lies hidden behind the strongly obscuring Vela
region of the Milky Way. Utilizing observations from the {\it Spitzer Space
Telescope}, we have found it to be a luminous infrared starburst galaxy with a
star formation rate of \sim 21 M_{\sun} \rm{yr^{-1}}, arising from
exceptionally strong molecular PAH emission (L_{7.7\micron} = 1.50 \times
10^{9} L_{\odot}) and far-infrared emission from cold dust. The galaxy
exhibits a weak mid-infrared continuum compared to other starforming galaxies
and U/LIRGs. This relative lack of emission from small grains suggests atypical
interstellar medium conditions compared to other starbursts. We do not detect
significant Ne {\sc v} or O {\sc iv}, which implies an absent or
very weak AGN. The galaxy possesses a prominent bulge of evolved stars and a
stellar mass of 4.4(1.4)\times10^{10} M_{\sun}. With its plentiful gas
supply and current star formation rate, a doubling of stellar mass would occur
on a timescale of 2 Gyr. Compared to local galaxies, HIZOA J0836-43
appears to be a "scaled-up" spiral undergoing inside-out formation, possibly
