Electroweak Physics at HERA: Introduction and Summary
A high luminosity upgrade of HERA will allow the measurement of standard
model parameters and the neutral current couplings of quarks. These results
will have to be consistent with other precision measurements or indicate traces
of new physics. The analysis of production will complement future results
of LEP 2 and the Tevatron. We summarize the main results and conclusions
obtained by the working group on Electroweak Physics concerning the potential

Real-time optical micro-manipulation using optimized holograms generated on the GPU
Holographic optical tweezers allow the three dimensional, dynamic, multipoint
manipulation of micron sized dielectric objects. Exploiting the massive
parallel architecture of modern GPUs we can generate highly optimized holograms
at video frame rate allowing the interactive micro-manipulation of 3D

Intraerythrocytic pH variations during hemodialysis: A 31P NMR study
Intraerythrocytic pH variations during hemodialysis: A 31P NMR study. Before hemodialysis, patients have an intraerythrocytic pH (pHi) and an extracellular pH, measured in whole blood (pHo), which are lower than those of healthy controls. During bicarbonate hemodialysis, pHi values continuously increase, approaching a normal value at the end of the session. Concomitantly, pHo values follow similar variations. During acetate hemodialysis, pHi values exhibit a steep initial decrease, reaching a minimum after about 15 minutes. Concurrently, however, pHo values decrease only slightly. This phenomenon seems to originate in the intraerythrocytic medium and might be due to a shift in intracellular CO2/bicarbonate equilibrium. This drop in pHi exhibits interpatient variability, suggesting that the magnitude of pH decrease would be correlated with the degree of the problems observed in some patients undergoing acetate hemodialysis
A fast algorithm for estimating transmission probabilities in QTL detection designs with dense maps
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In the case of an autosomal locus, four transmission events from the parents to progeny are possible, specified by the grand parental origin of the alleles inherited by this individual. Computing the probabilities of these transmission events is essential to perform QTL detection methods.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A fast algorithm for the estimation of these probabilities conditional to parental phases has been developed. It is adapted to classical QTL detection designs applied to outbred populations, in particular to designs composed of half and/or full sib families. It assumes the absence of interference.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The theory is fully developed and an example is given.</p
Resonance solutions of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in an open double-well potential
The resonance states and the decay dynamics of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger
(or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation are studied for a simple, however flexible model
system, the double delta-shell potential. This model allows analytical
solutions and provides insight into the influence of the nonlinearity on the
decay dynamics. The bifurcation scenario of the resonance states is discussed,
as well as their dynamical stability properties. A discrete approximation using
a biorthogonal basis is suggested which allows an accurate description even for
only two basis states in terms of a nonlinear, nonhermitian matrix problem.Comment: 21 pages, 14 figure
