    Impulsive Spin-Motion Entanglement for Fast Quantum Computation and Sensing

    We perform entanglement of spin and motional degrees of freedom of a single, ground-state trapped ion through the application of a 1616 ps laser pulse. The duration of the interaction is significantly shorter than both the motional timescale (10\approx 10 μ\mus) and spin precession timescale (10\approx 10 ns), demonstrating that neither sets a fundamental speed limit on this operation for quantum information processing. Entanglement is demonstrated through the collapse and revival of spin coherence as the spin components of the wavefunction separate and recombine in phase space. We infer the fidelity of these single qubit operations to be 97(3)%97(3)\%.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    C/EBPβ-1 promotes transformation and chemoresistance in Ewing sarcoma cells.

    CEBPB copy number gain in Ewing sarcoma was previously shown to be associated with worse clinical outcome compared to tumors with normal CEBPB copy number, although the mechanism was not characterized. We employed gene knockdown and rescue assays to explore the consequences of altered CEBPB gene expression in Ewing sarcoma cell lines. Knockdown of EWS-FLI1 expression led to a decrease in expression of all three C/EBPβ isoforms while re-expression of EWS-FLI1 rescued C/EBPβ expression. Overexpression of C/EBPβ-1, the largest of the three C/EBPβ isoforms, led to a significant increase in colony formation when cells were grown in soft agar compared to empty vector transduced cells. In addition, depletion of C/EBPβ decreased colony formation, and re-expression of either C/EBPβ-1 or C/EBPβ-2 rescued the phenotype. We identified the cancer stem cell marker ALDH1A1 as a target of C/EBPβ in Ewing sarcoma. Furthermore, increased expression of C/EBPβ led to resistance to chemotherapeutic agents. In summary, we have identified CEBPB as an oncogene in Ewing sarcoma.     On the lattice structure of probability spaces in quantum mechanics

    Let C be the set of all possible quantum states. We study the convex subsets of C with attention focused on the lattice theoretical structure of these convex subsets and, as a result, find a framework capable of unifying several aspects of quantum mechanics, including entanglement and Jaynes' Max-Ent principle. We also encounter links with entanglement witnesses, which leads to a new separability criteria expressed in lattice language. We also provide an extension of a separability criteria based on convex polytopes to the infinite dimensional case and show that it reveals interesting facets concerning the geometrical structure of the convex subsets. It is seen that the above mentioned framework is also capable of generalization to any statistical theory via the so-called convex operational models' approach. In particular, we show how to extend the geometrical structure underlying entanglement to any statistical model, an extension which may be useful for studying correlations in different generalizations of quantum mechanics.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1008.416

    International Coercion, Emulation and Policy Diffusion: Market-Oriented Infrastructure Reforms, 1977-1999

    Why do some countries adopt market-oriented reforms such as deregulation, privatization and liberalization of competition in their infrastructure industries while others do not? Why did the pace of adoption accelerate in the 1990s? Building on neo-institutional theory in sociology, we argue that the domestic adoption of market-oriented reforms is strongly influenced by international pressures of coercion and emulation. We find robust support for these arguments with an event-history analysis of the determinants of reform in the telecommunications and electricity sectors of as many as 205 countries and territories between 1977 and 1999. Our results also suggest that the coercive effect of multilateral lending from the IMF, the World Bank or Regional Development Banks is increasing over time, a finding that is consistent with anecdotal evidence that multilateral organizations have broadened the scope of the “conditionality” terms specifying market-oriented reforms imposed on borrowing countries.     A Coupled Land-Atmosphere Simulation Program (CLASP): Calibration and validation

    We present a model and application designed to study the coupled land-atmosphere hydrologic cycle, following water from its inflow into a region by horizontal atmospheric transport through surface-atmosphere exchange processes and aquifer recharge to outflow as runoff and river discharge. The model includes a two-way water flow among its major reservoirs (atmosphere, vadose zone, groundwater, surface water, river). A unique feature of the model is that phreatophytic interactions are included when the water table intersects the root zone. The model emulates a uniform grid box of an atmospheric general circulation model, but with finer horizontal resolution for the land processes, and forms a test bed for developing continental-scale simulation of the hydrologic cycle. The model is calibrated using the First International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Field Experiment (FIFE) observations for 1987 and validated using FIFE observations for 1988 and 1989. Four physical factors emerge as important for simulating the FIFE water cycle: effective relative humidity for initiating stable (large scale) condensation, length of the growing season, amount of available soil water, and cloud cover parameterization. Further evaluation uses water table and river discharge measurements for years up to 1993. The model simulates multiyear behavior in the hydrologic cycle reasonably well. Average differences between FIFE observations and simulated fluxes during the calibration period are only a few percent, including fluxes not specifically calibrated. Model-observation differences in surface sensible and latent heat fluxes are larger during the 1988 drought but recover to relatively small values for 1989, suggesting some difficulty in simulating hydrologic extremes occurring outside the calibration conditions. A model sensitivity study using statistical disaggregation to allow precipitation to fall on only a portion of the landscape indicates that spatial disaggregation of precipitation can have strong impact on groundwater storage and surface discharge, potentially improving agreement between observed and simulated streamflow. Water redistributed through the model\u27s aquifer-river network can at times raise the water table high enough for water to seep back to the vegetation root zone and increase evapotranspiration. During relatively dry periods, up to 33% of monthly evapotranspiration was derived from groundwater-supported evapotranspiration, emphasizing the need to quantify better aquifer-atmosphere interaction. The work also demonstrates the feasibility and utility of fully coupled water budgeting schemes

    PI16 is expressed by a subset of human memory Treg with enhanced migration to CCL17 and CCL20

    The peptidase inhibitor PI16 was shown previously by microarray analysis to be over-expressed by CD4-positive/CD25-positive Treg compared with CD4-positive/CD25-negative Th cells. Using a monoclonal antibody to the human PI16 protein, we found that PI16-positive Treg have a memory (CD45RO-positive) phenotype and express higher levels of FOXP3 than PI16-negative Treg. PI16-positive Treg are functional in suppressor assays in vitro with potency similar to PI16-negative Treg. Further phenotyping of the PI16-positive Treg revealed that the chemokine receptors CCR4 and CCR6 are expressed by more of the PI16-positive/CD45RO-positive Treg compared with PI16-negative/CD45RO-positive Treg or Th cells. PI16-positive Treg showed enhanced in vitro migration towards the inflammatory chemokines CCL17 and CCL20, suggesting they can migrate to sites of inflammation. We conclude that PI16 identifies a novel distinct subset of functional memory Treg which can migrate to sites of inflammation and regulate the pro-inflammatory response at those sites.Ian C.     Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead
