Relativistic positioning: four-dimensional numerical approach in Minkowski space-time
We simulate the satellite constellations of two Global Navigation Satellite
Systems: Galileo (EU) and GPS (USA). Satellite motions are described in the
Schwarzschild space-time produced by an idealized spherically symmetric non
rotating Earth. The trajectories are then circumferences centered at the same
point as Earth. Photon motions are described in Minkowski space-time, where
there is a well known relation, Coll, Ferrando & Morales-Lladosa (2010),
between the emission and inertial coordinates of any event. Here, this relation
is implemented in a numerical code, which is tested and applied. The first
application is a detailed numerical four-dimensional analysis of the so-called
emission coordinate region and co-region. In a second application, a GPS
(Galileo) satellite is considered as the receiver and its emission coordinates
are given by four Galileo (GPS) satellites. The bifurcation problem (double
localization) in the positioning of the receiver satellite is then pointed out

Turbulent diffusion and drift in galactic magnetic fields and the explanation of the knee in the cosmic ray spectrum
We reconsider the scenario in which the knee in the cosmic ray spectrum is
explained as due to a change in the escape mechanism of cosmic rays from the
Galaxy from one dominated by transverse diffusion to one dominated by drifts.
We solve the diffusion equations adopting realistic galactic field models and
using diffusion coefficients appropriate for strong turbulence (with a
Kolmogorov spectrum of fluctuations) and consistent with the assumed magnetic
fields. We show that properly taking into account these effects leads to a
natural explanation of the knee in the spectrum, and a transition towards a

Granulomatous enteritis in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) associated with soya bean meal regardless of water dissolved oxygen level
This study investigated morphological changes associated with soya bean meal-induced enteritis (SBMIE) in distal intestine (DI) of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed a soya bean meal (SBM)-based diet and exposed to normoxia or hypoxia created by optimal and low water flow rates, respectively. A 28-day adaption period was followed by a 42-day challenge period where 600 fish were subjected to dietary challenge and/or hypoxia. Twelve tanks each containing 50 juvenile trout were assigned randomly in triplicate to each treatment. Histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation revealed pathological features that have not previously been described in association with SBMIE. Vacuolar degeneration of epithelial cells mainly at the base of mucosal folds, epithelial cysts, epithelial dysplasia, necrosis, shedding of necrotic cells, and granulomatous inflammation including infiltration of enlarged, sometimes finely vacuolated or “foamy” macrophages, multinucleated giant cells and increased proliferation of fibroblasts were observed. Acid-fast bacteria were not detected in enlarged macrophages; however, these cells contained AB-PAS- and sometimes cytokeratin-positive material, which was interpreted to be of epithelial/goblet cell origin. Hypoxia did not affect the morphological changes in DI. These results suggest that SBM was associated with a granulomatous form of enteritis in DI of rainbow trout regardless of water oxygen level
Ewald methods for polarizable surfaces with application to hydroxylation and hydrogen bonding on the (012) and (001) surfaces of alpha-Fe2O3
We present a clear and rigorous derivation of the Ewald-like method for
calculation of the electrostatic energy of the systems infinitely periodic in
two-dimensions and of finite size in the third dimension (slabs) which is
significantly faster than existing methods. Molecular dynamics simulations
using the transferable/polarizable model by Rustad et al. were applied to study
the surface relaxation of the nonhydroxylated, hydroxylated, and solvated
surfaces of alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite). We find that our nonhydroxylated structures
and energies are in good agreement with previous LDA calculations on
alpha-alumina by Manassidis et al. [Surf. Sci. Lett. 285, L517, 1993]. Using
the results of molecular dynamics simulations of solvated interfaces, we define
end-member hydroxylated-hydrated states for the surfaces which are used in
energy minimization calculations. We find that hydration has a small effect on
the surface structure, but that hydroxylation has a significant effect. Our
calculations, both for gas-phase and solution-phase adsorption, predict a
greater amount of hydroxylation for the (012) surface than for the (001)
surface. Our simulations also indicate the presence of four-fold coordinated

An Introduction to Data Analysis in Asteroseismology
A practical guide is presented to some of the main data analysis concepts and
techniques employed contemporarily in the asteroseismic study of stars
exhibiting solar-like oscillations. The subjects of digital signal processing
and spectral analysis are introduced first. These concern the acquisition of
continuous physical signals to be subsequently digitally analyzed. A number of
specific concepts and techniques relevant to asteroseismology are then
presented as we follow the typical workflow of the data analysis process,
namely, the extraction of global asteroseismic parameters and individual mode
parameters (also known as peak-bagging) from the oscillation spectrum.Comment: Lecture presented at the IVth Azores International Advanced School in

A complete 3D numerical study of the effects of pseudoscalar-photon mixing on quasar polarizations
We present the results of three-dimensional simulations of quasar
polarizations in the presence of pseudoscalar-photon mixing in the
intergalactic medium. The intergalactic magnetic field is assumed to be
uncorrelated in wave vector space but correlated in real space. Such a field
may be obtained if its origin is primordial. Furthermore we assume that the
quasars, located at cosmological distances, have negligible initial
polarization. In the presence of pseudoscalar-photon mixing we show, through a
direct comparison with observations, that this may explain the observed large
scale alignments in quasar polarizations within the framework of big bang
cosmology. We find that the simulation results give a reasonably good fit to

The DA+dMe eclipsing binary EC13471-1258: its cup runneth over...just
EC13471-1258 is a detached eclipsing binary with Porb = 3h37m, comprising a
DA white dwarf and a dMe dwarf. Total eclipses of the white dwarf lasting 14
min, and a large amplitude ellipsoidal variation are seen in the light curve.
Flares from the dMe star occur regularly. Each star contributes roughly equal
amounts of light at 5500 Ang.
HST STIS spectra show strong Ly alpha with weak metal lines, and yield Teff =
14220 K, log g = 8.34, Z = 1/30th solar, K = 138 km/s and V sin i = 400 km/s
for the white dwarf. Optical spectra yield the spectral type (M3.5-4.0), Teff =
3100 K, Z = solar, K = 266 km/s and V sin i = 140 km/s for the dMe star. The H
alpha emission line comprises 2 or more components and implies that very weak
mass transfer is occurring. The dynamical solution also implies that the dMe
star just fills its Roche lobe. Accurate masses and radii for each star were
derived: the dMe values favour the Clemens et al. (1998) mass-radius relation.
The large rotational velocity of the white dwarf (400 km/s) suggests that the
system has transferred mass in the past so that it is presently a hibernating
cataclysmic variable. The metallicity contrast between the component stars
provides an opportunity for tests of diffusion theory.Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Larval dispersion along an axially symmetric mid-ocean ridge

The hydrodynamic basis for this study is a primitive equation model implemented in two dimensions (depth and across-ridge), forced at the open boundaries to provide suitably realistic simulation of currents observed on the EPR ridge crest from May to November 1999. Three-dimensional trajectories of numerical larvae are computed assuming homogeneity in currents in the along-ridge direction. Larval dispersal fluctuates significantly in time. Transport distance decreases systematically with height above the bottom where numerical larvae are less subject to strong currents along the flanks of the ridge. The probability that the simulated larvae will be located near the ridge crest at settlement depends strongly on their behavioral characteristics (vertical position in the water column during the larval stage) and the length of their precompetency period.We gratefully acknowledge the support of NSF grant OCE-0424953, which funded the Larval Dispersion along the Deep East Pacific Rise (LADDER) project. Gasoline: An adaptable implementation of TreeSPH
The key algorithms and features of the Gasoline code for parallel
hydrodynamics with self-gravity are described. Gasoline is an extension of the
efficient Pkdgrav parallel N-body code using smoothed particle hydrodynamics.
Accuracy measurements, performance analysis and tests of the code are
presented. Recent successful Gasoline applications are summarized. These cover
a diverse set of areas in astrophysics including galaxy clusters, galaxy
formation and gas-giant planets. Future directions for gasdynamical simulations
in astrophysics and code development strategies for tackling cutting edge

Avalanche Dynamics in Evolution, Growth, and Depinning Models
The dynamics of complex systems in nature often occurs in terms of
punctuations, or avalanches, rather than following a smooth, gradual path. A
comprehensive theory of avalanche dynamics in models of growth, interface
depinning, and evolution is presented. Specifically, we include the Bak-Sneppen
evolution model, the Sneppen interface depinning model, the Zaitsev flux creep
model, invasion percolation, and several other depinning models into a unified
treatment encompassing a large class of far from equilibrium processes. The
formation of fractal structures, the appearance of noise, diffusion with
anomalous Hurst exponents, Levy flights, and punctuated equilibria can all be
related to the same underlying avalanche dynamics. This dynamics can be
represented as a fractal in spatial plus one temporal dimension. We develop
a scaling theory that relates many of the critical exponents in this broad
category of extremal models, representing different universality classes, to
two basic exponents characterizing the fractal attractor. The exact equations
and the derived set of scaling relations are consistent with numerical
