Scottish theme towns: have new identities enhanced development?
Three small towns in southwest Scotland have recently been branded as distinct theme towns, based on books, artists and food. This is an attempt to make them more attractive to visitors and thereby improve their economy. The objective of this research is to establish whether the new identities possessed by the towns have enhanced their development. It is argued, using data reviewing the past decade, that they have all developed, albeit at different rates, in terms of the economy and culture. Moreover, it is maintained that social capital has been enhanced and is a factor whose importance has been under-appreciated by planners and observers of this type of process. The relevance of the new identity to the pre-branding identity is also seen as a factor in successful development and ideas of authenticity and heritage are brought to bear on the relationship
The yellow European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) may adopt a sedentary lifestyle in inland freshwaters
We analysed the movements of the growing yellow phase using a long-term markârecapture programme on European eels in a small catchment (the FrĂŠmur, France). The results showed that of the yellow eels (>200 mm) recaptured, more than 90% were recaptured at the original marking site over a long period before the silvering metamorphosis and downstream migration. We conclude that yellow European eels >200 mm may adopt a sedentary lifestyle in freshwater area, especially in small catchment
The transitional gap transient AT 2018hso: new insights into the luminous red nova phenomenon
Context. The absolute magnitudes of luminous red novae (LRNe) are intermediate between those of novae and supernovae (SNe), and show a relatively homogeneous spectro-photometric evolution. Although they were thought to derive from core instabilities in single stars, there is growing support for the idea that they are triggered by binary interaction that possibly ends with the merging of the two stars.
Aims. AT 2018hso is a new transient showing transitional properties between those of LRNe and the class of intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs) similar to SN 2008S. Through the detailed analysis of the observed parameters, our study supports that it actually belongs to the LRN class and was likely produced by the coalescence of two massive stars.
Methods. We obtained ten months of optical and near-infrared photometric monitoring, and 11 epochs of low-resolution optical spectroscopy of AT 2018hso. We compared its observed properties with those of other ILRTs and LRNe. We also inspected the archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images obtained about 15 years ago to constrain the progenitor properties.
Results. The light curves of AT 2018hso show a first sharp peak (reddening-corrected M-r = -13.93 mag), followed by a broader and shallower second peak that resembles a plateau in the optical bands. The spectra dramatically change with time. Early-time spectra show prominent Balmer emission lines and a weak [Ca II] doublet, which is usually observed in ILRTs. However, the strong decrease in the continuum temperature, the appearance of narrow metal absorption lines, the great change in the H alpha strength and profile, and the emergence of molecular bands support an LRN classification. The possible detection of a M-I similar to -8 mag source at the position of AT 2018hso in HST archive images is consistent with expectations for a pre-merger massive binary, similar to the precursor of the 2015 LRN in M101.
Conclusions. We provide reasonable arguments to support an LRN classification for AT 2018hso. This study reveals growing heterogeneity in the observables of LRNe than has been thought previously, which is a challenge for distinguishing between LRNe and ILRTs. This suggests that the entire evolution of gap transients needs to be monitored to avoid misclassifications

SN 2016coi/ASASSN-16fp: An example of residual helium in a type Ic supernova?
The optical observations of Ic-4 supernova (SN) 2016coi/ASASSN-16fp, from
to days after explosion, are presented along with analysis
of its physical properties. The SN shows the broad lines associated with SNe
Ic-3/4 but with a key difference. The early spectra display a strong absorption
feature at \AA\ which is not seen in other SNe~Ic-3/4 at this
epoch. This feature has been attributed to He I in the literature. Spectral
modelling of the SN in the early photospheric phase suggests the presence of
residual He in a C/O dominated shell. However, the behaviour of the He I lines
are unusual when compared with He-rich SNe, showing relatively low velocities
and weakening rather than strengthening over time. The SN is found to rise to
peak d after core-collapse reaching a bolometric luminosity of Lp
\ergs. Spectral models, including the nebular epoch, show
that the SN ejected \msun\ of material, with \msun\ below
5000 \kms, and with a kinetic energy of erg. The
explosion synthesised \msun\ of 56Ni. There are significant
uncertainties in E(B-V)host and the distance however, which will affect Lp and
MNi. SN 2016coi exploded in a host similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)
and away from star-forming regions. The properties of the SN and the
host-galaxy suggest that the progenitor had of \msun\

Light curves of hydrogen-poor Superluminous Supernovae from the Palomar Transient Factory
We investigate the light-curve properties of a sample of 26 spectroscopically
confirmed hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) in the Palomar
Transient Factory (PTF) survey. These events are brighter than SNe Ib/c and SNe
Ic-BL, on average, by about 4 and 2~mag, respectively. The peak absolute
magnitudes of SLSNe-I in rest-frame band span ~mag, and these peaks are not powered by radioactive Ni,
unless strong asymmetries are at play. The rise timescales are longer for SLSNe
than for normal SNe Ib/c, by roughly 10 days, for events with similar decay
times. Thus, SLSNe-I can be considered as a separate population based on
photometric properties. After peak, SLSNe-I decay with a wide range of slopes,
with no obvious gap between rapidly declining and slowly declining events. The
latter events show more irregularities (bumps) in the light curves at all
times. At late times, the SLSN-I light curves slow down and cluster around the
Co radioactive decay rate. Powering the late-time light curves with
radioactive decay would require between 1 and 10 of Ni masses.
Alternatively, a simple magnetar model can reasonably fit the majority of
SLSNe-I light curves, with four exceptions, and can mimic the radioactive decay
of Co, up to days from explosion. The resulting spin values do
not correlate with the host-galaxy metallicities. Finally, the analysis of our

Immunomagnetic t-lymphocyte depletion (ITLD) of rat bone marrow using OX-19 monoclonal antibody
Graft versus host disease (GVHD) may be abrogated and host survival prolonged by in vitro depletion of T lymphocytes from bone marrow (BM) prior to allotransplantation. Using a mouse anti-rat pan T-lymphocyte monoclonal antibody (0Ă19) bound to monosized, magnetic, polymer beads, T lymphocytes were removed in vitro from normal bone marrow. The removal of the T lymphocytes was confirmed by flow cytometry. Injection of the T-lymphocyte-depleted bone marrow into fully allogeneic rats prevents the induction of GVHD and prolongs host survival. A highly efficient technique of T-lymphocyte depletion using rat bone marrow is described. It involves the binding of OX-19, a MoAb directed against all rat thy-mocytes and mature peripheral T lymphocytes, to monosized, magnetic polymer spheres. Magnetic separation of T lymphocytes after mixing the allogeneic bone marrow with the bead/OX-19 complex provides for a simple, rapid depletion of T lymphocytes from the bone marrow. In vitro studies using flow cytometry and the prevention of GVHD in a fully allogeneic rat bone marrow model have been used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the depletion procedure. PIT telemetry as a method to study the habitat requirements of fish populations: application to native and stocked trout movements
Passive integrated transponder (PIT) technology was used to study the behaviour of fishes during the summer season in two headwater streams of northeastern Portugal. A total of 71 PIT tags (12 mm long x 2.1 mm diameter) were surgically implanted in 1+ stocked (39) and native (32) brown trout of two size classes (< 20.0 and ⼠20.0 cm). Eight independent antennae, connected to a multi-point decoder (MPD reader) unit, were placed in different microhabitats, selected randomly every three days during the observation period (29 August to 9 September in Baceiro stream and 19 September to 4 October in Sabor stream). The results confirmed this method as a suitable labour efficient tool to assess the movement and habitat use of sympatric stocked and native trout populations. About 76.9% of stocked and 59.4% of native PIT tagged trouts were detected. Multivariate techniques (CCA, DFA and classification tree) showed a separation in habitat use between the two sympatric populations. Stocked trout mainly used the microhabitats located in the middle of the channel with higher depths and without cover. Furthermore, these fishes displayed a greater mobility and a diel activity pattern different to native trout populations
The effect of dose and vehicle on early tissue damage and regenerative activity after chloroform administration to mice. Food Chem
Abstract-The relationship between the acute toxicity of orally-administered chloroform and its longterm tumorigenic potential was studied in male mice of the CFLP outbred Swiss albino mouse strain. A single dose of approximately 18 mg CHC1 3/kg had no detectable acute toxic effect on the liver or kidneys and did not stimulate regenerative activity, whereas both toxicity and subsequent tissue regeneration were observed with single doses of about 60 mg/kg or higher. The severity of the toxic effects and regenerative changes was greater when corn oil was used as a vehicle for chloroform than when the vehicle was a toothpaste base. In earlier long-term studies in mice of the same strain, kidney tumours occurred in males given 60 mg/kg/day throughout life but not in mice given 17 mg/kg/day. The tumour response was greater when the 60-mg/kg/day dose was given in an oily vehicle than when it was given in toothpaste. The findings are consistent with the hypothesis that early acute toxic change and subsequent repair are a sine qua non for tumorigenesis in the kidney and liver in response to chloroform
