    Intercalation and dynamics of hydrated Fe2+ in the vermiculites from Santa Olalla and Ojén

    Although the intercalation of Fe3+ into layered phyllosicilicates-especially into smectites-attracted much attention in the past two decades, the information about Fe2+ loaded phyllosilicates is sparse. Here we present an investigation of the Fe2+ exchanged vermiculites from Santa Olalla and Ojén (Andalusia, Spain) by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy. The room temperature Mössbauer spectra are very similar to those of the starting compounds (Na forms) except for a decrease of the contribution of structural Fe3+ and a concomitant increase of the contribution of Fe2+ sites, indicating an internal redox process. The extent of this redox reaction is different for the two vermiculites. Thus, the intercalated Fe2+ acts as an electron mediator from the external medium to the structural Fe3+ ions. A new component attributable to intercalated Fe2+ is practically invisible in the room temperature Mössbauer spectra, but increases strongly and continuously during cooling to 4.2 K, where it is the dominant feature of the Mössbauer patterns. At 4.2 K, its quadruple splitting amounts to 3.31 mm/s, which is in excellent agreement with the quadrupole slitting of Fe2+ coordinated to six water molecules in a highly symmetric octahedral arrangement. The strong decrease of the Mössbauer-Lamb factor of this component with increasing temperature indicates a weak bonding of the Fe 2+ in the interlayer space

    Digital skills, ICTs and students’ needs: a case study in social work degree, University of Zaragoza (Aragón-Spain)

    Technological innovations are related to information and communication technologies (ICTs), which in turn have become a fundamental pillar in the field of education. Social work professionals require new approaches to take on the new type of work demanded by the digital society, specializing in research into the innovation of these new forms of action through technology. This article analyses whether university training is in tune with the new skills and abilities required for professional interventions in the twenty-first century. A total of 288 surveys were carried out on 309 students. Each survey consisted of 25 questions on the five digital skills areas. The results indicate that training in digital skills must gain space in university training plans, just as the pandemic became a starting point for the massive use of ICTs. The conclusions point to the importance of improving training in digital competences and skills for future generations of social workers, who, although they are digital natives, will need to know how to use ICTs in their social work

    Phylogenetic relationships of Chanidae (Teleostei: Gonorynchiformes) as impacted by Dastilbe moraesi, from the Sanfranciscana basin, Early Cretaceous of Brazil

    Fossil gonorynchiform fishes range from the Lower Cretaceous to the early Miocene, and are represented by a few dozen living species. The order is currently divided into two major clades: Gonorynchoidei, which includes the families Gonorynchidae and Kneriidae, and Chanoidei, encompassing a single family, Chanidae, with a single recent species, the Indo-Pacific Chanos chanos, and several fossil taxa. Chanidae includes some poorly known taxa, such as Dastilbe moraesi, described from the Aptian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Areado Formation, Sanfranciscana basin, Brazil. This species is currently considered to be a junior synonym of the type species of its genus, Dastilbe crandalli, from Santana Formation, Aptian, northeastern Brazil. The analysis of abundant D. moraesi specimens revealed several new morphological features, many of which had previously been misinterpreted. Dastilbe moraesi was incorporated into a gonorynchiform character matrix as revised and modified for the Chanidae. We obtained a single most parsimonious tree in which D. moraesi is distinct and phylogenetically apart from D. crandalli. According our analysis, D. moraesi forms a sister pair with Chanos, a clade which is closely related to Tharrhias, all composing the tribe ChaniniGonorynchiformes fósseis ocorrem desde do Cretáceo inferior ao Mioceno inferior, e são representados por alguns representantes viventes. A ordem está dividida atualmente em dois clados principais: Gonorynchoidei, que inclui as famílias Gonorynchidae e Kneriidae, e Chanoidei, compreendendo uma única família, Chanidae, com uma única espécie vivente, Chanos chanos, do Indo-Pacífico, além de vários representantes fósseis. Chanidae inclui alguns táxons problemáticos, tais como Dastilbe moraesi, descrito do Aptiano (Cretáceo Inferior) da Formação Areado, bacia Sanfranciscana, Brasil. Esta espécie é atualmente considerada um sinônimo júnior da espécie-tipo de seu gênero, Dastilbe crandalli, da Formação Santana, Aptiano do nordeste do Brasil.     Cenomanian transgression in the Basque-Cantabrian Basin (northern Spain) and associated faunal replacement

    Abstract:The available data concerning the environmental changes and faunal replacements that occurred during the Cenomanian marine transgression in the North of Iberia are integrated and discussed on the basis of new evidence from the invertebrate and vertebrate fossil record. New stratigraphical data and the reassessment of known stratigraphic sections support the correlation of the Cenomanian carbonate-ramp successions from the Iberian margin to the centre of the Basque-Cantabrian Basin during a major transgressive episode. This new stratigraphical framework is the key to understand the changing oceanographic conditions in the area that resulted from a progressive inundation of the Iberian continental platform. This transgression seems to have triggered major faunal replacements in this particular geographic area, starting out around the Albian-Cenomanian transition. Ammonite faunal replacement led to a new radiation of this group that spread out rapidly until their new decline around the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary. A new record of Calycoceras (Newboldiceras) asiaticum spinosum and the first record of a Pachyrhizodontidae indet. (Actinopterygii, Teleostei, Crossognathiformes) from the Iberian Peninsula are reported here from the Cenomanian basal units of the major Late Cretaceous transgressive episode. The two new specimens come from the same level in an outer marine ramp succession near Amurrio, Basque Country, northern Spain, and are representatives of the Cenomanian faunal turnover. The new record of a pachyrhizodontoid fish from the Cretaceous of Iberia is an indication of the ichthyofaunal replacement in this part of the world. The relict fish faunas from the Early Cretaceous of the former island of Iberia were mostly formed by basal neopterygian taxa closely related to those of the marine Jurassic of other parts of Europe. During the Early-Late Cretaceous transition they were replaced by the teleostean-based new stock that constitutes the basis of the Late Cretaceous, Cenozoic, and Recent faunas.Resumen: Se integran y discuten los datos disponibles sobre los cambios ambientales y los reemplazamientos faunísticos que sucedieron en el norte de Iberia durante la transgresión del Cenomaniense, incluyéndose nuevas evidencias de los registros fósiles de invertebrados y vertebrados. Nuevos datos estratigráficos y la revisión de secciones estratigráficas conocidas proporcionan fundamentos para la correlación de las series de rampa carbonatada cenomanienses desde el margen ibérico hasta la zona central de la Cuenca Vasco-Cantábrica, desarrolladas durante un importante episodio transgresivo. Este nuevo esquema estratigráfico configura la base para entender las cambiantes condiciones oceanográficas en la zona de estudio, las cuales resultaron de una progresiva inundación del margen continental ibérico. Esta transgresión se vislumbra como factor determinante para reemplazamientos faunísticos en esta zona, que comenzaron durante el tránsito Albiense-Cenomaniense. Los cambios en las faunas de ammonites condujeron hacia una rápida radiación del grupo hasta un nuevo declive alrededor del tránsito Cenomaniense-Turoniense. Se describen aquí un nuevo registro de Calycoceras (Newboldiceras) asiaticum spinosum y el primer registro de Pachyrhizodontidae indet. (Actinopterigii, Teleostei, Crossognathiformes) de la Península Ibérica, provenientes de la parte basaldel episodio transgresivo cenomaniense. Ambos son representativos del cambio faunístico y proceden del mismo nivel estratigráfico en una serie de rampa carbonatada externa cerca de Amurrio, País Vasco, España. Asimismo, este primer Pachyrhizodontoidei del Cretácico de Iberia indica un cambio importante en las faunas de teleósteos en esta parte del mundo. Las faunas relictas de peces del Cretácico inferior de la entonces isla de Iberia estaban básicamente compuestas por neopterigios basales directamente relacionados con los del Jurásico marino de otras partes de Europa.     Modelling impacts of precision irrigation on crop yield and in-field water management

In this paper, the development of an integrated modelling approach involving the coupling of a water application model with a biophysical crop simulation model (Aquacrop) to evaluate the in-field impacts of precision irrigation on crop yield and soil water management is described. The approach allows for a comparison between conventional irrigation management practices against a range of alternate so-called ‘precision irrigation’ strategies (including variable rate irrigation, VRI). It also provides a valuable framework to evaluate the agronomic (yield), water resource (irrigation use and water efficiency), energy (consumption, costs, footprint) and environmental (nitrate leaching, drainage) impacts under contrasting irrigation management scenarios. The approach offers scope for including feedback loops to help define appropriate irrigation management zones and refine application depths accordingly for scheduling irrigation. The methodology was applied to a case study in eastern England to demonstrate the utility of the framework and the impacts of precision irrigation in a humid climate on a high-value field crop (onions). For the case study, the simulations showed how VRI is a potentially useful approach for irrigation management even in a humid environment to save water and reduce deep percolation losses (drainage). It also helped to increase crop yield due to improved control of soil water in the root zone, especially during a dry season

    Desde hace algún tiempo, estamos trabajando en un proyecto de investigación relacionado con la mejora de la formación inicial del profesorado de secundaria, por considerar que se trata de un tema fundamental para el futuro de nuestro sistema educativo. Uno de los aspectos más relevantes de este proyecto es la exploración de las concepciones previas de los futuros profesores del área científico-técnica y el diseño de propuestas metodológicas que contribuyan a su evolución y progreso durante el proceso de formación inicial. En este contexto nos ha surgido la necesidad de realizar una revisión de trabajos anteriores sobre esta temática, con objeto de proporcionar unos fundamentos sólidos al desarrollo de los trabajos que puedan realizarse en el marco de este proyecto. La finalidad principal de este estudio consiste en mostrar un resumen de la revisión realizada sobre el pensamiento curricular del profesorado, en torno a los procesos de aprendizaje, enseñanza y evaluación de las ciencias.For some time, we have been working on a research project related to the improvement of the initial training of secondary school teachers, considering that it is a fundamental issue for the future of our educational system.     Study of the Influence of Sintering Atmosphere and Mechanical Activation on the Synthesis of Bulk Ti2AlN MAX Phase Obtained by Spark Plasma Sintering

    The influence of the mechanical activation process and sintering atmosphere on the microstructure and mechanical properties of bulk Ti2AlN has been investigated. The mixture of Ti and AlN powders was prepared in a 1:2 molar ratio, and a part of this powder mixture was subjected to a mechanical activation process under an argon atmosphere for 10 h using agate jars and balls as milling media. Then, the sintering and production of the Ti2AlN MAX phase were carried out by Spark Plasma Sintering under 30 MPa with vacuum or nitrogen atmospheres and at 1200 °C for 10 min. The crystal structure and microstructure of consolidated samples were characterized by X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction patterns were fitted using the Rietveld refinement for phase quantification and determined their most critical microstructural parameters. It was determined that by using nitrogen as a sintering atmosphere, Ti4AlN3 MAX phase and TiN were increased at the expense of the Ti2AlN. In the samples prepared from the activated powders, secondary phases like Ti5Si3 and Al2O3 were formed. However, the higher densification level presented in the sample produced by using both nitrogen atmosphere and MAP powder mixture is remarkable. Moreover, the high-purity Ti2AlN zone of the MAX-1200 presented a hardness of 4.3 GPa, and the rest of the samples exhibited slightly smaller hardness values (4.1, 4.0, and 4.2 GPa, respectively) which are matched with the higher porosity observed on the SEM images.España, Universidad de Sevilla CITIUS under the grant PPIT-2021, project no. 2021/00000691España project funded by the Madrid region under program S2018/NMT-4381 MAT4.0-C

    Enhancement of the intrinsic fluorescence of ZIF-8 via post-synthetic cation exchange with Cd2+ and its incorporation into PDMS films for selective sulfide optical sensing

    In this study, ZIF-8 MOF nanocrystals were synthesized and post-synthetically modified by applying different cation exchange strategies. Addition of cadmium nitrate in either methanol or DMF followed by either magnetic stirring or gentle heating led to the incorporation of a small amount of Cd (II) ions into the crystal structure in most cases, as clearly demonstrated by several characterization techniques including PXRD, SEM-EDS and FT-IR. This novel doped material exhibits a high fluorescence with the maximum emission wavelength at 444 nm upon excitation at 380 nm, which allows its use as an effective optical sensor. The sensing capability of the Cd-doped ZIF-8 material was demonstrated by its exposure to sulfide ions in aqueous solution. The fluorescence of the doped material was gradually quenched as the concentration of S2− was increased. Sensing devices based on mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by using poly (dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) as a hosting matrix for the Cd-doped ZIF-8 crystals, giving rise to fluorescent sensing films with fast and selective responses against a broad number of potential interferents

    Suicide care from the nursing perspective: a meta‐synthesis of qualitative studies

    Aims: to explore nurses' experiences of suicide care and to identify and synthesize the most suitable interventions for the care of people with suicidal behaviour from a nursing perspective. Design: qualitative meta-synthesis. Data sources: comprehensive search of five electronic databases for qualitative studies published between January 2015 and June 2019. Review methods: the PRISMA statement was used for reporting the different phases of the literature search and the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) qualitative research checklist was used as an appraisal framework. Data synthesis was conducted using Sandelowski and Barroso's method. Results: seventeen articles met the inclusion criteria. The data analysis revealed 13 subcategories from which four main categories emerged: 'Understanding suicidal behaviour as a consequence of suffering', 'Nurses' personal distress in suicide care', 'The presence of the nurse as the axis of suicide care' and, 'Improving nurses' relational competences for a better therapeutic environment'. Conclusion: further training of nurses on the therapeutic relationship, particularly in non-mental health care work settings, and monitoring of the emotional impact on nurses in relation to suicide is required to promote more effective prevention and care. Impact: this review provides new insights on how suicide is interpreted, the associated emotions, the way suicide is approached and proposals for improving clinical practice from the point of view of nurses. The results demonstrate that the nurse-patient relationship, ongoing assessment, and the promotion of a sense of security and hope are critical in nursing care for patients who exhibit suicidal behaviour. Consequently, to promote an effective nursing care of suicide, nurses should be provided with further training on the therapeutic relationship. Thus, health institutions do not only provide the time and space to conduct an adequate therapeutic relationship, but also, through their managers, they should supervise and address the emotional impact that is generated in nurses caring for patients who exhibit suicidal behaviour

    Electrical properties of stoichiometric BiFeO3 prepared by mechanosynthesis with either conventional or spark plasma sintering

    Phase-pure powders of stoichiometric BiFeO3 have been prepared by mechanosynthesis. Ceramics sintered by either conventional heating in air or spark plasma sintering (SPS) followed by oxidative anneal in air are highly insulating with conductivity e.g. ~10–6 Scm–1 at 300 °C and activation energy 1.15(2) eV, which are comparable to those of a good-quality BiFeO3 single crystal. By contrast, the as-prepared SPS sample without the post-sinter anneal shows higher conductivity e.g. ~10–6 Scm–1 at 225 °C and lower activation energy 0.67(3) eV, indicating some reduction of the sample by the SPS process.
