The JRC-Acquis: A multilingual aligned parallel corpus with 20+ languages
We present a new, unique and freely available parallel corpus containing
European Union (EU) documents of mostly legal nature. It is available in all 20
official EUanguages, with additional documents being available in the languages
of the EU candidate countries. The corpus consists of almost 8,000 documents
per language, with an average size of nearly 9 million words per language.
Pair-wise paragraph alignment information produced by two different aligners
(Vanilla and HunAlign) is available for all 190+ language pair combinations.
Most texts have been manually classified according to the EUROVOC subject
domains so that the collection can also be used to train and test multi-label
classification algorithms and keyword-assignment software. The corpus is
encoded in XML, according to the Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines. Due to
the large number of parallel texts in many languages, the JRC-Acquis is
particularly suitable to carry out all types of cross-language research, as
well as to test and benchmark text analysis software across different languages
(for instance for alignment, sentence splitting and term extraction).Comment: A multilingual textual resource with meta-data freely available for

Signatures of granular microstructure in dense shear flows
Granular materials react to shear stresses differently than do ordinary
fluids. Rather than deforming uniformly, materials such as dry sand or
cohesionless powders develop shear bands: narrow zones containing large
relative particle motion leaving adjacent regions essentially rigid[1,2,3,4,5].
Since shear bands mark areas of flow, material failure and energy dissipation,
they play a crucial role for many industrial, civil engineering and geophysical
processes[6]. They also appear in related contexts, such as in lubricating
fluids confined to ultra-thin molecular layers[7]. Detailed information on
motion within a shear band in a three-dimensional geometry, including the
degree of particle rotation and inter-particle slip, is lacking. Similarly,
only little is known about how properties of the individual grains - their
microstructure - affect movement in densely packed material[5]. Combining
magnetic resonance imaging, x-ray tomography, and high-speed video particle
tracking, we obtain the local steady-state particle velocity, rotation and
packing density for shear flow in a three-dimensional Couette geometry. We find
that key characteristics of the granular microstructure determine the shape of

Changes in liver mitochondrial plasticity induced by brain tumor
BACKGROUND: Accumulating data suggest that liver is a major target organ of systemic effects observed in the presence of a cancer. In this study, we investigated the consequences of the presence of chemically induced brain tumors in rats on biophysical parameters accounting for the dynamics of water in liver mitochondria. METHODS: Tumors of the central nervous system were induced by intraveinous administration of ethylnitrosourea (ENU) to pregnant females on the 19th day of gestation. The mitochondrial crude fraction was isolated from the liver of each animal and the dynamic parameters of total water and its macromolecule-associated fraction (structured water, H(2)Ost) were calculated from Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements. RESULTS: The presence of a malignant brain tumor induced a loss of water structural order that implicated changes in the physical properties of the hydration shells of liver mitochondria macromolecules. This feature was linked to an increase in the membrane cholesterol content, a way to limit water penetration into the bilayer and then to reduce membrane permeability. As expected, these alterations in mitochondrial plasticity affected ionic exchanges and led to abnormal features of mitochondrial biogenesis and caspase activation. CONCLUSION: This study enlightens the sensitivity of the structured water phase in the liver mitochondria machinery to external conditions such as tumor development at a distant site. The profound metabolic and functional changes led to abnormal features of ion transport, mitochondrial biogenesis and caspase activation
Force distributions in 3D granular assemblies: Effects of packing order and inter-particle friction
We present a systematic investigation of the distribution of normal forces at
the boundaries of static packings of spheres. A new method for the efficient
construction of large hexagonal-close-packed crystals is introduced and used to
study the effect of spatial ordering on the distribution of forces. Under
uniaxial compression we find that the form for the probability distribution of
normal forces between particles does not depend strongly on crystallinity or
inter-particle friction. In all cases the distribution decays exponentially at
large forces and shows a plateau or possibly a small peak near the average
force but does not tend to zero at small forces.Comment: 9 pages including 8 figure
Ecofriendly recycled aggregate concrete and bioreceptivity
Nowadays, it becomes essential to limit environmental impact of building materials and to consider the life cycle of materials used. Recycling of materials from demolition has the dual objective of preserving natural resources and limiting the number of storage sites. The study presented here aims to develop the use of recycled aggregate issued of concrete in total replacement of natural materials (sand and gravel). This work has to be done upstream the studies on bio-corrosion or bio-receptivity of these concrete composed of recycled aggregates. Following an experimental analysis of physical, mechanical and mineralogical properties of recycled aggregates,the influence of these characteristics on choosing formulation parameters of concrete and mortar was studied. It was shown that the use of superplasticizers is necessary to reach satisfactory properties of concrete. The next step of this work will be toanalyse the bio-receptivity of these concrete and compatibilitywith bio-admixture used to decrease bio-receptivity and bio-corrosion; and to develop bio-superplasticizers to replace chemical ones
Avalanche behavior in yield stress fluids
We show that, above a critical stress, typical yield stress fluids (gels and clay suspensions) and soft glassy materials (colloidal glasses) start flowing abruptly and subsequently accelerate, leading to avalanches that are remarkably similar to those of granular materials. Rheometrical tests reveal that this is associated with a bifurcation in rheological behavior: for small stresses, the viscosity increases in time; the material eventually stops flowing. For slightly larger stresses the viscosity decreases continuously in time; the flow accelerates. Thus the viscosity jumps discontinuously to infinity at the critical stress. Natalizumab treatment shows low cumulative probabilities of confirmed disability worsening to EDSS milestones in the long-term setting.
Abstract Background Though the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) is commonly used to assess disability level in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), the criteria defining disability progression are used for patients with a wide range of baseline levels of disability in relatively short-term trials. As a result, not all EDSS changes carry the same weight in terms of future disability, and treatment benefits such as decreased risk of reaching particular disability milestones may not be reliably captured. The objectives of this analysis are to assess the probability of confirmed disability worsening to specific EDSS milestones (i.e., EDSS scores â„3.0, â„4.0, or â„6.0) at 288 weeks in the Tysabri Observational Program (TOP) and to examine the impact of relapses occurring during natalizumab therapy in TOP patients who had received natalizumab for â„24 months. Methods TOP is an ongoing, open-label, observational, prospective study of patients with RRMS in clinical practice. Enrolled patients were naive to natalizumab at treatment initiation or had received â€3 doses at the time of enrollment. Intravenous natalizumab (300âŻmg) infusions were given every 4 weeks, and the EDSS was assessed at baseline and every 24 weeks during treatment. Results Of the 4161 patients enrolled in TOP with follow-up of at least 24 months, 3253 patients with available baseline EDSS scores had continued natalizumab treatment and 908 had discontinued (5.4% due to a reported lack of efficacy and 16.4% for other reasons) at the 24-month time point. Those who discontinued due to lack of efficacy had higher baseline EDSS scores (median 4.5 vs. 3.5), higher on-treatment relapse rates (0.82 vs. 0.23), and higher cumulative probabilities of EDSS worsening (16% vs. 9%) at 24 months than those completing therapy. Among 24-month completers, after approximately 5.5 years of natalizumab treatment, the cumulative probabilities of confirmed EDSS worsening by 1.0 and 2.0 points were 18.5% and 7.9%, respectively (24-week confirmation), and 13.5% and 5.3%, respectively (48-week confirmation). The risks of 24- and 48-week confirmed EDSS worsening were significantly higher in patients with on-treatment relapses than in those without relapses. An analysis of time to specific EDSS milestones showed that the probabilities of 48-week confirmed transition from EDSS scores of 0.0â2.0 to â„3.0, 2.0â3.0 to â„4.0, and 4.0â5.0 to â„6.0 at week 288 in TOP were 11.1%, 11.8%, and 9.5%, respectively, with lower probabilities observed among patients without on-treatment relapses (8.1%, 8.4%, and 5.7%, respectively). Conclusions In TOP patients with a median (range) baseline EDSS score of 3.5 (0.0â9.5) who completed 24 months of natalizumab treatment, the rate of 48-week confirmed disability worsening events was below 15%; after approximately 5.5 years of natalizumab treatment, 86.5% and 94.7% of patients did not have EDSS score increases of â„1.0 or â„2.0 points, respectively. The presence of relapses was associated with higher rates of overall disability worsening. These results were confirmed by assessing transition to EDSS milestones. Lower rates of overall 48-week confirmed EDSS worsening and of transitioning from EDSS score 4.0â5.0 to â„6.0 in the absence of relapses suggest that relapses remain a significant driver of disability worsening and that on-treatment relapses in natalizumab-treated patients are of prognostic importance
Evolving and sustaining ocean best practices and standards for the next decade
The oceans play a key role in global issues such as climate change, food security, and human health. Given their vast dimensions and internal complexity, efficient monitoring and predicting of the planetâs ocean must be a collaborative effort of both regional and global scale. A first and foremost requirement for such collaborative ocean observing is the need to follow well-defined and reproducible methods across activities: from strategies for structuring observing systems, sensor deployment and usage, and the generation of data and information products, to ethical and governance aspects when executing ocean observing. To meet the urgent, planet-wide challenges we face, methods across all aspects of ocean observing should be broadly adopted by the ocean community and, where appropriate, should evolve into âOcean Best Practices.â While many groups have created best practices, they are scattered across the Web or buried in local repositories and many have yet to be digitized. To reduce this fragmentation, we introduce a new open access, permanent, digital repository of best practices documentation (oceanbestpractices.org) that is part of the Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS). The new OBPS provides an opportunity space for the centralized and coordinated improvement of ocean observing methods. The OBPS repository employs user-friendly software to significantly improve discovery and access to methods. The software includes advanced semantic technologies for search capabilities to enhance repository operations. In addition to the repository, the OBPS also includes a peer reviewed journal research topic, a forum for community discussion and a training activity for use of best practices. Together, these components serve to realize a core objective of the OBPS, which is to enable the ocean community to create superior methods for every activity in ocean observing from research to operations to applications that are agreed upon and broadly adopted across communities. Using selected ocean observing examples, we show how the OBPS supports this objective. This paper lays out a future vision of ocean best practices and how OBPS will contribute to improving ocean observing in the decade to come
