    The issue of diseases and attempts to treat them has troubled humanity since the dawn of time. However, with the passage of time, the state of medical knowledge grew, and in the Renaissance there was a real revival of human sciences, which resulted in the works of such people as Andreas Vesalius, William Harvey or Giambattista Morgagni, and in the Commonwealth Wojciech Oczko or Joachim Delhafius. The symbolic work that introduces medicine not only in the nineteenth century, but also into the deep province is the „Health Journal for All States” by Franz Leopold Lafontaine. The analysis of three types of diseases: tuberculosis, smug and dental issues in relation to other researchers allows to compare the state of medical knowledge not only with what occurred before, but also with how these diseases were later looked at

    The Comet Interceptor Mission

    Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed to the European Space Agency in 2018, and formally adopted by the agency in June 2022, for launch in 2029 together with the Ariel mission. Comet Interceptor will take advantage of the opportunity presented by ESA's F-Class call for fast, flexible, low-cost missions to which it was proposed. The call required a launch to a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point. The mission can take advantage of this placement to wait for the discovery of a suitable comet reachable with its minimum ΔV capability of 600 ms-1. Comet Interceptor will be unique in encountering and studying, at a nominal closest approach distance of 1000 km, a comet that represents a near-pristine sample of material from the formation of the Solar System. It will also add a capability that no previous cometary mission has had, which is to deploy two sub-probes - B1, provided by the Japanese space agency, JAXA, and B2 - that will follow different trajectories through the coma. While the main probe passes at a nominal 1000 km distance, probes B1 and B2 will follow different chords through the coma at distances of 850 km and 400 km, respectively. The result will be unique, simultaneous, spatially resolved information of the 3-dimensional properties of the target comet and its interaction with the space environment. We present the mission's science background leading to these objectives, as well as an overview of the scientific instruments, mission design, and schedule

    Skewed X-inactivation is common in the general female population

    X-inactivation is a well-established dosage compensation mechanism ensuring that X-chromosomal genes are expressed at comparable levels in males and females. Skewed X-inactivation is often explained by negative selection of one of the alleles. We demonstrate that imbalanced expression of the paternal and maternal X-chromosomes is common in the general population and that the random nature of the X-inactivation mechanism can be sufficient to explain the imbalance. To this end, we analyzed blood-derived RNA and whole-genome sequencing data from 79 female children and their parents from the Genome of the Netherlands project. We calculated the median ratio of the paternal over total counts at all X-chromosomal heterozygous single-nucleotide variants with coverage ≄10. We identified two individuals where the same X-chromosome was inactivated in all cells. Imbalanced expression of the two X-chromosomes (ratios ≀0.35 or ≄0.65) was observed in nearly 50% of the population. The empirically observed skewing is explained by a theoretical model where X-inactivation takes place in an embryonic stage in which eight cells give rise to the hematopoietic compartment. Genes escaping X-inactivation are expressed from both alleles and therefore demonstrate less skewing than inactivated genes. Using this characteristic, we identified three novel escapee genes (SSR4, REPS2, and SEPT6), but did not find support for many previously reported escapee genes in blood. Our collective data suggest that skewed X-inactivation is common in the general population. This may contribute to manifestation of symptoms in carriers of recessive X-linked disorders. We recommend that X-inactivation results should not be used lightly in the interpretation of X-linked variants

    The concept of upbringing was truly revolutionised in the 18th century. From the theses of the English scholar John Locke, who encouraged changes to the approach to young people and educating their spirit (mind) so that they would become righteous and just citizens, to the ideas introduced by the Geneva-based philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau, suggesting that a child is a being completely different from an adult, so the concept of education should also be completely different. In Poland, there were some reflections of the aforementioned changes in education and upbringing, as evidenced by Prince Henryk Lubomirski, who at a very young age was placed under the care of his relative, Princess Izabela Lubomirska, née Czartoryska. It was she, influenced primarily by Jean Jacques Rousseau, who decided to raise Prince Henry according to the standards of the time

    Analysis of electric vehicles efficiency and their influence on environmental pollution

    Electric vehicles are increasingly present on the roads of the whole world. They have the opinion of ecological vehicles, not polluting the environment. Society is more and more often persuaded to buy electric cars as an environmentally friendly solution but is this for sure? Electric cars need quite a lot of electricity accumulated in batteries to drive on a long range. During the charging process, this energy is obtained from the electricity network, to where it is supplied by power plant. Electricity production from renewable sources is a privilege for the rare. However, electric cars are charged from the electricity grid, which in large part energy comes from non-renewable fuels. The efficiency of energy production in power plants and the energy transmission and conversion chain causes that only part of the energy produced in this way goes to the vehicle’s wheels. Although the power plants are equipped with more and more efficient exhaust gas cleaning systems, they do not clean them up to 100%. Sulphur, nitrogen, mercury and heavy metals remain in the exhaust. The article is an attempt to answer the question whether the total emission of toxic components associated with the use of an electric vehicle is not bigger than in a traditional internal combustion engine

    Experimental Study of the Vibration of the Spot Welding Gun at a Robotic Station

    The paper presents issues associated with the experimental study of the vibration of a spot welding gun mounted on a robotic arm. The main aim of the study was to assess the vibration of the robot flange and the vibration of the mounted tool. Because of the tools’ large size and weight (up to 150 kg), manipulating it in a limited space is a challenge for programmers when defining trajectories. The article presents the results of inertial measurements of the KUKA KR120 R2500 industrial robot equipped with a pneumatic welding tool, paying particular attention to the vibrations occurring at the process points. Inertial tests on the robotic station were made using triaxial accelerometers and a high-speed camera. The methodology developed by the authors confirmed the existence of structural vibrations and allowed for defining the relationship between the robot’s motion parameters (notably velocity and acceleration) and the size of the vibrations present. The paper presents selected test results for various parameters of robot motion (speeds from 2000 mm/s to 500 mm/s and acceleration ramps ranging from 100% to 25%). In the course of the study, a disturbance was noticed in the form of a reduction in the value of maximum acceleration. This could be attributed to the appearance of the structure’s natural vibrations. Their character is not constant, and they are damped
