Understanding the Valuation of Location Privacy: a Crowdsourcing-Based Approach

    Get PDF
The exchange of private information for services or other benefits is a commonplace practice today in the advent of mobile technology. In the case of mobile services, the exchanged commodity is increasingly often spatial location of the user. To decide whether this transaction is beneficial, the user needs to evaluate the exchange value of this commodity. To assess the value users give to their location, and to understand its relationship with location sharing, we conducted a study on a mobile crowdsourcing platform (N=190). We find that users\u27 valuation of location privacy is dependent on the sharing scenario. For instance, when the location is to be shared with an untrusted advertiser, the users require a premium as compensation for their information. Additionally, benefit perception and trust are found to be connected with more frequent location sharing, while perceived risks and privacy concern are associated with sharing one’s location less frequently

Työn koherenssin tunne työhyvinvoinnin mittarina : tutkimus koherenssin tunteesta työssä ja työkykyä edistävässä toiminnassa

    Get PDF
Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Rovaniemen kaupungin Työssä tapahtuu –toimintaan osallistuneiden henkilöiden työhyvinvointia ja oppimista koherenssin tunteen teorian viitekehyksestä. Tutkimuksen tavoitteet jakautuvat kahteen osaan. Tutkimuksessa pyritään selvittämään Antonovskyn koherenssin tunteen mittarin pohjalta kehittämämme työn koherenssin tunteen mittarin toimivuutta. Tällöin mie-lenkiinto kohdistuu siihen, kuinka koherenssin tunne näyttäytyy työn kontekstissa ja voidaanko työn koherenssin tunteella kuvata työhyvinvointia. Toiseksi tutkimuksessa pyritään selvittämään millai-nen merkitys koherenssin tunteella on oppimisessa. Tutkimus on kvantitatiivinen eli tilastollinen tutkimus. Aineisto on kerätty Webropol –kyselyllä, johon vastasi 359 henkilöä. Aineisto analysoitiin tilastollisin menetelmin IBM SPSS Statistics 21 -ohjelmalla

Protective and Return-Seeking Parents : The Power of Language in Child Abduction Law

    Get PDF
The aim of this chapter is to bring together two distinct regulatory spheres: child abduction law and the law of protection against violence against women and children. Using discourse analysis, we analyse how the key concepts of child abduction and protection against violence depict the actions and the parent, and what kind of effects these conceptualisations have on the lives of the parents. Focus is on the language of the central legal instruments, the Convention and the Brussels IIa Regulation, finding that their gender-neutral terminology of child abduction and swift return is ill-suited for cases in which there have been allegations of violence. The chapter also comments on the gendered terminology of Abducting mothers in the POAM project that does not fairly reflect the plight of mothers who are victims of violence. ‘In the language of international law on violence against women, protection against violence has become a key concept. The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has in several cases tried to consolidate the requirements of the Haque Convention and the protection of private and family life according to the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR), but due to different starting points this has been a difficult task.Peer reviewe

A Review of Video Triggers and Video Production in Higher Education and Continuing Education PBL Settings

    Get PDF
Higher education faces the challenges of bridging education and authentic work. In addition, it needs to respond to the highly multimodal and participatory communication and content creation practices, preferences, and cultures of present and future students. The aim of our article is to discuss how the use of video triggers and video production in PBL can help to respond to these challenges. Based on a literature review, we present and discuss the uses and outcomes of video triggers and video production within PBL contexts and related higher education and continuing education contexts. The research evidence reviewed in this article clearly illustrates the advantages of video triggers and video production in PBL settings while at the same time pointing out several conditions of their effective use

Productivity and Costs of Harwarder Systems in Industrial Roundwood Thinnings

    Get PDF
In several studies, the harwarder has proven to be a more cost-effective wood harvesting system than the traditional two-machine (harvester-forwarder) system, especially when the average stem size of the marked stand is relatively small, the removals per hectare/stand low (i.e. the harvesting site small), and the forwarding distance short. One of the strengths of a harwarder is considered to be the lower relocation costs compared to the two-machine system. The time consumption of harwarder relocations have not, however, been reported in the previous harwarder studies. Metsäteho Oy conducted a follow-up study of harwarders in industrial roundwood harvesting, and also investigated the relocations of harwarders. A total of five – three Ponsse Wisent Dual and two Valmet 801 Combi – harwarders were examined in the follow-up study. The amount of harvested industrial roundwood in the study totalled nearly 30,000 m3. The cost calculations showed that the harwarder system is more competitive than the twomachine system when the average stem size of the marked stand is relatively low, i.e. less than 110–170 dm3. Furthermore, harwarders were the most competitive at low-removal harvesting sites. The proportion of the total working time of harwarders used in relocations between harvesting sites was 2.5%, and the effective relocation time was, on the average, 1.3 hours/relocation. The study results underlined that it makes sense to harvest relatively small-removal and small-diameter thinning stands marked for harvesting with a harwarder while, conversely, it is more worthwhile to harvest sites with larger removals and trees using a two-machine harvester-forwarder system, thereby raising the profitability of forest machine business

Why caring counts : Public value creation in smart specialisation through partnerships for regional innovation (PRI)

    Get PDF
Smart specialisation is an instrument of the European Cohesion Policy and a key political principle to advance European competitiveness, innovation and welfare. Whereas smart specialisation is previously recognised for its focus on creating economic value through regional specialisation and new innovations, some recent arguments show that sustainable and social aspects are now defining the new smart specialisation strategy (McCann & Soete 2020; Pontikakis et al. 2022). In this paper, we examine the concept of public value to determine what a broader sustainable focus could mean for the next generation of smart specialisation strategies and how regions may use their entrepreneurial discovery processes (EDP) in a new way to combine vertical specialisation with more horizontal, sustainable and particularly social sustainability goals. Our inspection of public value via Moore’s strategic triangle and the smart specialisation literature indicate that the entrepreneurial discovery process can be viewed as a platform for conveying public value, which may also help in understanding how the entrepreneurial discovery process may become an open discovery process (ODP) in partnerships for regional innovation (PRO) implementation.© 2023 Riikka Kangas, Antti Mäenpää, Mika-Petri Laakkonen.
