    Get PDF
In the 21st century and because of the exponential growth of the Internet and Information Communication Technologies (ICT), people lived in a technological age, in all areas and in all contexts, we have daily contact with technology, with access to information, linked to it, we have a constant update of technological services and tools that change the method we study, work, communicate and socialize on an unprecedented scale. These constant changes oblige everyone regardless the age, gender or profession to possess a range of functional and critical thinking skills, such as Information Literacy, Media Literacy and Technology Literacy. This evolution, forces, the promoters of education, to be always aware of changes that society is introducing outside of the classroom. Today students don’t have the same role that used to, independently of age, they are very active and no longer the same introverted child that studied a few years ago in the classrooms. Also the educational environments can be created anywhere and used everywhere. According to this, students are used to seeking different forms and ways of motivation in and out of the classroom, they need that the learning and teaching process move along with the society and ICT changes. In order to ensure the success of today’s students, it’s important to give them the technological skills to make the correct use of ICT, to perform essential tasks for their training such as research and information selection, problems solvers and decision makers, creative and effective users of productivity tools and communicators, collaborators, publishers and producers of contents. The main purpose of this communication is, to show a part of ICT tools that can be used in educational settings to support learners, helping them to develop key skills in their training process, it’s also relevant to show how these tools can help teachers to achieve these objectives on the daily activities.

The adsorption of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen (N2) has been studied on potassium-exchanged (95%) binder-free beads of Y zeolite through single, binary, and ternary fixed bed breakthrough experiments, covering the temperature range between 313 and 423 K and a pressure of up to 350 kPa. At 313 K and 350 kPa, the single-component data obtained showed that the amounts adsorbed of CO2, CH4, and N2 are around 6.42, 1.45, and 0.671 mol kg-1, respectively. The binary experiments CO2/N2 carried out under typical post-combustion conditions show a selectivity of CO2 over N2 around 104. The ternary experiments resulted in the selectivities of CO2 over CH4 and N2 around 19 and 45, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium data have been modeled by the dual-site Langmuir model, and the breakthrough experiments were numerically simulated with a suitable dynamic fixed bed adsorption model. The model predicts with good accuracy the systematic behavior of all breakthrough experiments. The results shown in the present work prove that the potassium-exchanged binder-free beads of Y zeolite enhance the amount adsorbed of CO2 at low partial pressure over other alkali metal-exchanged faujasites and efficiently separate it from binary (CO2/N2) and ternary (CO2/CH4/N2) mixtures by fixed bed adsorption. The authors thank the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) and ERDF under Programme PT2020 to CIMO (UID/AGR/00690/2019) and POCI-01-0145- FEDER006984-Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM. As complex environments within which individuals and populations operate, universities present important contexts for understanding and addressing health issues. The healthy university is an example of the settings approach, which adopts a whole system perspective, aiming to make places within which people, learn, live, work and play supportive to health and wellbeing. The UK Healthy Universities Network has formulated an online toolkit, which includes a self-review tool, intended to enable universities to assess what actions they need to take to develop as a healthy university. This paper presents findings from consultative research undertaken with students from universities in England, Scotland and Wales, which explored what they believe represents a healthy university. Methods Student surveys and focus groups were used to collect data across eleven universities in England, Scotland and Wales. A priori themes were used to develop our own model for a healthy university, and for the thematic coding phase of analysis. Findings A healthy university would promote student health and wellbeing in every aspect of its business from its facilities and environment through to its curriculum. Access to reasonably priced healthy food and exercise facilities were key features of a healthy university for students in this study. The Self Review Tool has provided a crucial start for universities undertaking the journey towards becoming a healthy university. In looking to the future both universities and the UK Healthy Universities Network will now need to look at what students want from their whole university experience, and consider how the Self Review Tool can help universities embrace a more explicit conceptual framework. Conclusion The concept of a healthy university that can tailor its facilities and supportive environments to the needs of its students will go some way to developing students who are active global citizens and who are more likely to value and prioritise health and wellbeing, in the short and long term through to their adult lives

Satellite tracking and field assessment highlight major foraging site for green turtles in the Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania

There is a remarkable paucity of estimates of the numeric importance of sea turtles at foraging grounds. The Banc d'Arguin (BA) is a vast shallow marine area off the coast of Mauritania, known as a site of world importance for coastal migratory birds and other biodiversity, including extensive seagrass beds. We sampled foraging green turtles on the BA, and extensively tracked adult female green turtles from the Bijagós archipelago, the only significant nesting aggregation within 3000 km of the BA, to estimate the abundance of this foraging aggregation. Additionally, we used a demographic simulation to support our findings. Based on satellite tracking of adult females (n = 46), we estimate that 50 % of the nesting population from the Bijagós migrate to the BA post-nesting. We combine data on numbers nesting in the Bijagós with information on proportion migrating to the BA in the same years to conservatively estimate that 8285 adult female green turtles forage at this site. We also estimate that adult females represent only 5.6 % of the green turtles in the BA, implying that the number of turtles there is of the order of 150,000 individuals. Most of the BA enjoys effective protection as part of the Parc National du Banc d'Arguin where significant fisheries regulations are well enforced by a marine surveillance program. We show that the BA is one of the major foraging sites for green turtles nesting in the Bijagós and a site of critical importance for immature and adult green turtles in a global context.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Design and Properties of Novel Substituted Borosilicate Bioactive Glasses and Their Glass-Ceramic Derivatives

Three novel borosilicate bioactive glasses (BBGs) of general formula of 0.05Na2O·0.35x·0.20B2O3·0.40SiO2 (molar ratio, where x = MgO or CaO or SrO) were prepared and used to investigate the effect of crystallization on their properties including cytotoxicity. The three postmelt compositions were determined using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and crystallization events were studied using differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. This information was used to determine heat treatments to prepare glass-ceramics by controlled crystallization. X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that, after higher heat treatment temperatures (800–900 °C), borosilicate bioactive glass-ceramics (BBGCs) contained mainly borate and silicate crystalline phases. Specifically, BBG-Mg, BBG-Ca, and BBG-Sr glass-ceramics detected the presence of magnesium silicate-Mg2(SiO3)2 and magnesium borate-Mg2B2O5; wollastonite-2M-CaSiO3 and calcium borate-Ca(BO2)2; and strontium silicate-SrSiO3 and strontium borate-Sr2B2O5, respectively. In vitro cytotoxicity tests were performed using the mouse fibroblast cell line (L929). Glass and glass ceramic at concentrations lower than 50 mg/mL did not exhibit any level of cytotoxicity when compared with the control. However, quantitative evaluation indicated that greater cell growth occurred in the presence of materials with crystalline phases. Control of BBGs crystallization may therefore be used to influence the biocompatibility of these glass-ceramic systems

When an Intramolecular Disulfide Bridge Governs the Interaction of DUOX2 with Its Partner DUOXA2

Aims: The dual oxidase 2 (DUOX2) protein belongs to the NADPH oxidase (NOX) family. As H2O2 generator, it plays a key role in both thyroid hormone biosynthesis and innate immunity. DUOX2 forms with its maturation factor, DUOX activator 2 (DUOXA2), a stable complex at the cell surface that is crucial for the H2O2-generating activity, but the nature of their interaction is unknown. The contribution of some cysteine residues located in the N-terminal ectodomain of DUOX2 in a surface protein?protein interaction is suggested. We have investigated the involvement of different cysteine residues in the formation of covalent bonds that could be of critical importance for the function of the complex. Results: We report the identification and the characterization of an intramolecular disulfide bond between cys-124 of the N-terminal ectodomain and cys-1162 of an extracellular loop of DUOX2, which has important functional implications in both export and activity of DUOX2. This intramolecular bridge provides structural support for the formation of interdisulfide bridges between the N-terminal domain of DUOX2 and the two extracellular loops of its partner, DUOXA2. Innovation: Both stability and function of the maturation factor, DUOXA2, are dependent on the oxidative folding of DUOX2, indicating that DUOX2 displays a chaperone-like function with respect to its partner. Conclusions: The oxidative folding of DUOX2 that takes place in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) appears to be a key event in the trafficking of the DUOX2/DUOXA2 complex as it promotes an appropriate conformation of the N-terminal region, which is propitious to subsequent covalent interactions with the maturation factor, DUOXA2.
