Always against the state? An analysis of Polish and Swedish radical left-libertarian activists’ interaction with institutionalized politics

Radical left-libertarian movements are often regarded as primarily seeking ways to accom-plish social and political change outside the framework of institutionalized politics. Previous research, however, has paid little or no attention to the question of these activists’ actual interactions with institu-tionalized politics, nor has it addressed the ways these interactions could be understood in relation to their overall strategies and ideology. This article therefore explores whether, and to what extent, such interaction actually occurs and analyzes the meanings and motives radical left-libertarian activists – from anarchist, autonomist, and anarcho-syndicalist groups – attribute to various types of political actions, ranging from voting and lobbying to protests and direct action. We furthermore compare activists in Po-land and Sweden, in order to scrutinize whether cross-country differences in “political opportunities” affects the activists’ political strategies and ideas about how social and political change can best be ac-complished. Contrary to popular beliefs and many activists’ own self-declarations, our analysis shows that radical left-libertarian groups do in fact try to achieve political change by interacting with institution-alized politics. While radical left-libertarian activists do in most cases prefer “direct action”, this article explores how a more complex relationship to institutionalized politics allows them to accomplish real and immediate changes at the grassroots level

In this article, the author presents modernization of social life under the influence of railroads. He focuses his attention on the city on the Brda River, its immediate and further surroundings. In every analyzed case, the described changes had taken place at a varied pace and scale, although in all of them, their uniform, innovative character was visible. They included time optimization, technical progress, economization of life, growing egalitarianism, women’s emancipation, processes of self-organization of society and democratization of social life, industrialization, urbanization, and expansion of transport network

Social Movement or Subculture? Alterglobalists in Central and Eastern Europe

Większość badań nad ruchem alterglobalistycznym koncentruje się na Europie Zachodniej i Ameryce Północnej, od czasu do czasu uwzględniając inne części świata. Badania na temat tego ruchu w krajach postsocjalistycznych Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej są mniej niż wyczerpujące i rzadko podejmowane z perspektywy porównawczej. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu wypełnienie tej luki poprzez opisanie kluczowych wydarzeń z historii tego ruchu, jak również genealogii oddolnego aktywizmu w regionie. Ruch alterglobalistyczny rozwinął się w środowisku wrogo nastawionym do lewicowych ideologii i grup. Niniejszy artykuł ma wyjaśnić nie tylko rozwój ruchu alterglobalistycznego w regionie, lecz także jego źródła. Stawia również pytania o naturę ruchu i sposobów jego analizy ‒ jako upolitycznionego ruchu społecznego lub subkultury i stylu życia. Bliskie związki oddolnych ruchów społecznych oraz subkultury i kontrkultury w Europie Środkowej i Wschodniej mogą sugerować nowe i świeże spojrzenie na badania ruchów społecznych.Most of the research on the alterglobalist, also known as the global justice, movement has focused on Western Europe and North America, with occasional research on other parts of the world. There has been little research done on this movement in the post-socialist countries of Central and Eastern Europe. This paper attempts to fill this gap by exploring the key events of the movement, as well as the genealogy of grassroots social activism in the region. It offers insight into a movement that developed in a region that, due to its history, has been rather hostile to leftist ideologies and groups. This paper examines the development of the alterglobalist movement in the region and traces its inspirations and path dependencies. It also poses questions about the nature of the movement and ways to analyze it—whether as a politicized social movement or a subculture and lifestyle choice. The close connections of Central and Eastern European grassroots social movements to subcultures and counterculture might suggest a new and fresh perspective for studying social movements

Social Workers\u27 Satisfactions: Methodological Notes and Substantive Findings

The use of instruments derived from industrial research to investigate the work satisfactions of social workers can lead to distortion of results. Responses from ninety-one social workers in nine agencies indicates sources of satisfactions and dissatisfactions not present in industrial settings, and -- in contradistinction to the dual-factor or bipolarity theory -- both satisfactions and dissatisfactions arising from the same source in some cases. The most important factors affecting workers\u27 satisfactions were the ability to achieve results, their relationships with clients, their relationship with members of multidisciplinary staffs, and presence or absence of sufficient time and resources. The higher order needs -- recognition, responsibility, and advancement -- found in industrial research do not appear in these responses. There are implications for social work education in these findings

72-letnia pacjentka z kryptogennym udarem niedokrwiennym mózgu z towarzyszącym tętniakiem przegrody międzyprzedsionkowej i drożnym otworem owalnym

Ischemic stroke is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. In 40% of cases etiology of stroke is unclear. Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is present in more than half, while atrial septum aneurysm (ASA) appears in 25% of patients with cryptogenic stroke. However, available data on the correlation between a cryptogenic stroke and the coexistence of PFO and ASA are limited. A lack of knowledge and recommendations in this field makes clinicians unsure in terms of their approach to a patient with a stroke and PFO with concomitant ASA. The authors describe the case of a 72-year-old patient with ischemic stroke and PFO with concomitant ASA. The diagnostic process and treatment methods are presented. The approach is discussed in detail.Udar mózgu jest jedną z głównych przyczyn chorobowości i umieralności na świecie. W blisko 40% przypadków etiologia udarów niedokrwiennych mózgu pozostaje nieznana. Badania wskazują, że 50% udarów kryptogennych wiąże się z obecnością drożnego otworu owalnego (PFO), a 25% z obecnością tętniaka przegrody międzyprzedsionkowej (ASA). Jednak wyniki badań dotyczących korelacji obecności PFO i ASA z kryptogennym udarem mózgu są sprzeczne, a postępowanie terapeutyczne w udarze mózgu ze współistniejącymi PFO i ASA pozostaje nieustalone. W pracy opisano przypadek 72-letniej pacjentki hospitalizowanej z powodu udaru niedokrwiennego mózgu z towarzyszącym świeżo rozpoznanym ASA i z PFO

Festiwal podróżniczy Dni Turystyki

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie historii studenckiego festiwalu podróżniczego Dni Turystyki organizowanego przez studentów Wydziału Nauk Geograficznych i Geologicznych UAM. Przedstawione zostały motywy powstania festiwalu, struktura jego programu oraz funkcje. Opisano takie aspekty festiwalu, jak miejsca, terminy oraz struktura organizacyjna, a także omówiono wpływ organizacji festiwalu na przebieg kariery zawodowej absolwentów.The aim of this article is to present the history of the student traveler’s festival Dni Turystyki organized by the students of the Faculty of Geographical and Geological Science Adam Mickiewicz University. The motives uprising festival were presented, as well as the structure of the program and its functions. Moreover, the place and terms of festival and organizing structure were shown. Also the impact of the festival on the career paths of graduates were described

Migracja otwartoźródłowego systemu Liferay Portal w Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej w Toruniu – studium przypadku

Obecnie w celu efektywnego zarządzania informacją, biblioteki sięgają po systemy klasy Enterprise Content Management. Jednakże przejście na nieużyteczny bądź wadliwy system portalowy lub przyjęcie niepraktycznych koncepcji, może pociągnąć za sobą poważne konsekwencje. Przykład stanowi otwartoźródłowy system Liferay Portal, który wdrożony został w Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej w Toruniu w 2013 r. W tym przypadku, po trzech latach użytkowania, wymagana była migracja do nowszej, pozbawionej błędów wersji. W związku z tym, autorzy omówili migrację społecznościowej wersji systemu Liferay Portal 6.0.2 do stabilnego i dojrzałego wydania 6.2.5. W niniejszym artykule podjęta została próba uporządkowania czynności, które wykonane zostały podczas prowadzonych prac związanych z migracją, a także wskazania na liczne problemy, które zostały rozwiązane. Intencją artykułu jest także ukazanie możliwości jakie oferuje platforma Liferay Portal pod kątem tworzenia bibliotecznego intranetu społecznościowego. Migracja platformy zakończyła się powodzeniem i była korzystna dla różnych grup użytkowników korzystających z jej usług.Nowadays, for effective information management, libraries are referred to Enterprise Content Management systems. However, switching to a useless or faulty portal system or adopting impractical concepts can have serious consequences. The example is the open source Liferay Portal system, which was implemented at the University Library in Toruń in 2013. In this case, after three years of use, migration was required to a newer, error-free version. Accordingly, the authors discussed the migration of the community version of Liferay Portal 6.0.2 to a stable and mature release of 6.2.5. This article attempts to organize the work that was done during the migration work, as well as to indicate the number of problems that have been resolved. The intent of this article is also to highlight the opportunities offered by the Liferay Portal platform for building a library intranet. Platform migration has been successful and has benefited the various user groups that use it
