    Does the thermal spike affect low-energy ion-induced interfacial mixing?

    Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to obtain the three-dimensional distribution of interfacial mixing and cascade defects in Ti/Pt multilayer system due to single 1 keV Ar+Ar^+ impacts at grazing angle of incidence. The Ti/Pt system was chosen because of its relatively high heat of mixing in the binary alloy and therefore a suitable candidate for testing the effect of heat of mixing on ion-beam mixing. However, the calculated mixing profile is not sensitive to the heat of mixing. Therefore the thermal spike model of mixing is not fully supported under these irradiation conditions. Instead we found that the majority of mixing occurs after the thermal spike during the relaxation process. These conclusions are supported by liquid, vacancy as well as adatom analysis. The interfacial mixing is in various aspects anomalous in this system: the time evolution of mixing is leading to a phase delay for Ti mixing, and Pt exhibits an unexpected double peaked mixing evolution.     AIMS: CD1a is a molecule belonging to the highly conserved group of CD1 proteins. Its expression in dendritic cells is related to the presentation of tumour-derived glycolipid antigens to T cells and, consequently, the development of a successful antitumour response. The aim was to investigate the presence of CD1a+ cells in both primary tumours and lymph nodes (LN) of a series of 35 invasive ductal carcinomas by both immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. METHODS AND RESULTS: CD1a antigen was more expressed in N0 than N1 breast cancer (P < 0.0001) in both primary lesions and LN metastases and correlated positively and significantly with oestrogen (ER) (P = 0.0025) and progesterone (P = 0.0226) receptor (PR) status, as well as CD4+ and CD8+ T-lymphocyte infiltration. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report to show a link between CD1a+ mononuclear cells in breast cancer and in paired LN metastases. The positive and significant correlations between the number of CD1a+ cells and positivity of the primary tumour for ER and PR suggest a possible role for CD1a as a prognostic marker for breast cancer, raising the possibility that hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patients may have a better prognosis in the presence of greater dendritic cell infiltration

    Two new species of Trichoglossum (Geoglossaceae, Ascomycota) from south Mexico

    Two new species of Trichoglossum are described from south Mexico based on morphological and molecular evidence. Trichoglossum caespitosum is characterized by the caespitose ascomata, rough and coiled paraphy-ses and the ascospores with 9-11 septa. Trichoglossum tropicale is characterized by the capitate ascomata, clavate and straight paraphyses and the ascospores with 10-12 septa. Both species grow in the tropical forests of the Yucatan peninsula. Here we provide descriptions and photographs for these species, together with a phylogenetic analyses based on the DNA sequences of nuc rDNA (ITS region and 28S gene) and a comparative table for the species known for America

    Specific bacteriophages against Enterococcus faecalis in root canal infection : a scoping review

    Antecedentes: Existen varios factores que conducen al fracaso del tratamiento endodóntico, sin embargo, el factor más asociado a esta situación es la persistencia de microorganismos dentro del sistema de conductos radiculares. Enterococcus faecalis es el microorganismo que más se ha asociado al fracaso endodóntico por ser multirresistente. Se requiere una nueva alternativa que elimine este microorganismo. Los bacteriófagos son virus capaces de destruir células bacterianas, por lo tanto, es necesario investigar más sobre el tema y la aplicación clínica en endodoncia de la fagoterapia. Objetivo: El propósito de este artículo es revisar la evidencia disponible asociada a la actividad lítica de bacteriófagos específicos contra E. faecalis aplicada en odontología a través de los años. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de revisión de la literatura científica mediante la metodología de Scoping Review. Para ello fueron utilizadas cuatro bases de datos biomédicas: MEDLINE Pubmed, Clinical Key, Science Direct y Scielo. Resultados: Posterior a la búsqueda en las 4 bases de datos y luego de hacer la eliminación de aquellas referencias duplicadas, que no tuvieran relación con odontología o sin disponibilidad de acceso al texto completo, se seleccionaron en total 13 referencias para realizar este Scoping Review. Conclusión: La literatura disponible en las bases de datos es muy limitada actualmente, se requiere mayor investigación de este tema específicamente relacionada con las infecciones endodónticas y la aplicación clínica de la terapia con fagos.Background: There are several factors that lead to endodontic treatment failure, however, the factor most associated with this situation is the persistence of microorganisms within the root canal system. Enterococcus faecalis is the microorganism that has been most associated with endodontic failure. A new alternative is required to eliminate this microorganism. Bacteriophages are viruses capable of destroying bacterial cells, therefore, more research is needed on the subject and the clinical application of phage therapy in endodontics. Objective: The purpose of this article is to review the available evidence associated with the lytic activity of specific bacteriophages against E. faecalis applied in dentistry over the years. Materials and methods: A review study of the scientific literature was carried out using the Scoping Review methodology. Four biomedical databases were used for this: MEDLINE Pubmed, Clinical Key, Science Direct and Scielo. Results: After the search in the 4 databases and after eliminating those duplicate references that were not related to dentistry or without availability of access to the full text, a total of 13 references were selected to carry out this Scoping Review. Conclusion: The literature available in the databases is currently very limited, more research is required on this topic specifically related to endodontic infections and the clinical application of phage therapy.Especialista en EndodonciaEspecializació

    Role of Complement Regulatory Proteins in the Survival of Murine Allo-transplanted Sertoli Cells

    Sertoli cells (SC) are known to contain immunoprotective properties, which allow them to survive as allografts without the use of immunosuppressive drugs. Experiments were designed to determine which factors are related to prolonged survival of allogeneic SC. Balb/c derived Sertoli (TM4) and colon cancer (CT-26) cell lines were implanted beneath the kidney capsule of non-immunosuppressed C57BL/6 mice and compared their survival as allografts. Compared to TM4 graft, which survived more than 7 days after transplantation, CT-26 showed massive infiltration of polymorphonuclear cells, necrosis and enlargement of draining lymph nodes. Cultured cell lines showed no differences in their expression patterns of FasL, TGF β1, clusterin and two complement regulatory proteins (CRP, i.e., membrane cofactor protein, MCP; decay accelerating factor, DAF), but protectin (CD59), another member of CRP was expressed only on TM4. These results suggest that CD59 and unknown factors may contribute to the prolonged survival of SC in non-immunoprivileged sites

    Mechanism of Humoral and Cellular Immune Modulation Provided by Porcine Sertoli Cells

    The understanding of main mechanisms that determine the ability of immune privilege related to Sertoli cells (SCs) will provide clues for promoting a local tolerogenic environment. In this study, we evaluated the property of humoral and cellular immune response modulation provided by porcine SCs. Porcine SCs were resistant to human antibody and complement-mediated formation of the membrane attack complex (38.41±2.77% vs. 55.02±5.44%, p=0.027) and cell lysis (42.95±1.75% vs. 87.99±2.25%, p<0.001) compared to immortalized aortic endothelial cells, suggesting that porcine SCs are able to escape cellular lysis associated with complement activation by producing one or more immunoprotective factors that may be capable of inhibiting membrane attack complex formation. On the other hand, porcine SCs and their culture supernatant suppressed the up-regulation of CD40 expression (p<0.05) on DCs in the presence of LPS stimulation. These novel findings, as we know, suggest that immune modulatory effects of porcine SCs in the presence of other antigen can be obtained from the first step of antigen presentation. These might open optimistic perspectives for the use of porcine SCs in tolerance induction eliminating the need for chronic immunosuppressive drugs

    Phthalocyanine-nanocarbon ensembles: From discrete molecular and supramolecular systems to hybrid nanomaterials

To access the final edited and published work see http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/ar5004384Conspectus Phthalocyanines (Pcs) are macrocyclic and aromatic compounds that present unique electronic features such as high molar absorption coefficients, rich redox chemistry, and photoinduced energy/electron transfer abilities that can be modulated as a function of the electronic character of their counterparts in donor-acceptor (D-A) ensembles. In this context, carbon nanostructures such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and, more recently, graphene are among the most suitable Pc companions. Pc-C60 ensembles have been for a long time the main actors in this field, due to the commercial availability of C60 and the ell-established synthetic methods for its functionalization. As a result, many Pc-C60 architectures have been prepared, featuring different connectivities (covalent or supramolecular), intermolecular interactions (self-organized or molecularly dispersed species), and Pc HOMO/LUMO levels. All these elements provide a versatile toolbox for tuning the photophysical properties in terms of the type of process (photoinduced energy/electron transfer), the nature of the interactions beteen the electroactive units (through bond or space), and the kinetics of the formation/decay of the photogenerated species. Some recent trends in this field include the preparation of stimuli-responsive multicomponent systems ith tunable photophysical properties and highly ordered nanoarchitectures and surface-supported systems shoing high charge mobilities. A breakthrough in the Pc-nanocarbon field as the appearance of CNTs and graphene, hich opened a ne avenue for the preparation of intriguing photoresponsive hybrid ensembles shoing light-stimulated charge separation. The scarce solubility of these 1-D and 2-D nanocarbons, together ith their loer reactivity ith respect to C60 stemming from their less strained sp2 carbon netorks, has not meant an unsurmountable limitation for the preparation of variety of Pc-based hybrids. These systems, hich sho improved solubility and dispersibility features, bring together the unique electronic transport properties of CNTs and graphene ith the excellent light-harvesting and tunable redox properties of Pcs. A singular and distinctive feature of these Pc-CNT/graphene (single- or fe-layers) hybrid materials is the control of the direction of the photoinduced charge transfer as a result of the band-like electronic structure of these carbon nanoforms and the adjustable electronic levels of Pcs. Moreover, these conjugates present intensified light-harvesting capabilities resulting from the grafting of several chromophores on the same nanocarbon platform.In this Account, recent progress in the construction of covalent and supramolecular Pc-nanocarbon ensembles is summarized, ith a particular emphasis on their photoinduced behavior. e believe that the high degree of control achieved in the preparation of Pc-carbon nanostructures, together ith the increasing knoledge of the factors governing their photophysics, ill allo for the design of next-generation light-fueled electroactive systems.     Challenges in supporting lay carers of patients at the end of life: results from focus group discussions with primary healthcare providers

    Background: Family caregivers (FCGs) of patients at the end of life (EoL) cared for at home receive support from professional and non-professional care providers. Healthcare providers in general practice play an important role as they coordinate care and establish contacts between the parties concerned. To identify potential intervention targets, this study deals with the challenges healthcare providers in general practice face in EoL care situations including patients, caregivers and networks. Methods: Focus group discussions with general practice teams in Germany were conducted to identify barriers to and enablers of an optimal support for family caregivers. Focus group discussions were analysed using content analysis. Results: Nineteen providers from 11 general practices took part in 4 focus group discussions. Participants identified challenges in communication with patients, caregivers and within the professional network. Communication with patients and caregivers focused on non-verbal messages, communicating at an appropriate time and perceiving patient and caregiver as a unit of care. Practice teams perceive themselves as an important part of the healthcare network, but also report difficulties in communication and cooperation with other healthcare providers. Conclusion: Healthcare providers in general practice identified relational challenges in daily primary palliative care with potential implications for EoL care. Communication and collaboration with patients, caregivers and among healthcare providers give opportunities for improving palliative care with a focus on the patient-caregiver dyad. It is insufficient to demand a (professional) support network; existing structures need to be recognized and included into the care
