International Biodeterioration & Biodegradation 64(2010)388 e 396The aim of this study is the comparison between different treatments(anatase and two conventional biocides:Biotin T and Anios)for preventing biodeterioration of mortars. The treatments were applied both in the laboratory on mortar slabs and in situ on walls of Palácio Nacional da Pena(Sintra,Portugal). Mortar slabs treated with anatase (pure and Fe3þ doped)applied as acoating or by mixing within the mortar were prepared, and their surfaces characterized by different methodologies. The mortars were inoculated with cyanobacteria and chlorophyta species, incubated for a period of 4 months and the chlorophyll content quantified by extraction method and fluorescence emission. For comparison purposes untreated mortar slabs were inoculated, incubated and finally treated with the biocides. After two weeks the respective chlorophyll contents was quantified. In situ studies in two external walls of Palácio Nacional da Pena covered by organisms were also performed by direct application of aqueous solutions of the three products, and the efficiency of the treatment monitored by spectrophotometry using the CIELAB method.Lichens and other phototrophic microorganisms were identified by direct observation with a microscope and cyanobacteria, green microalgae, bacteria and fungi by DNA-based molecular analysis targeting the 16S and 18S ribosomal RNAgenes. The results show that anatase is a better agent for preventing biodeterioration than the two tested conventional biocides, both in mortars slabsand in situ studies. In fact, photographic and colorimetric records made in two external walls of Palácio Nacional da Pena after two weeks of treatments application showed that lichens and other phototrophic microorganisms disappear from the places where anatase was applied

We investigated the effect of HIV status in the incidence of neutropenia associated with cisplatin-based CRT for CC and its impact in treatment completion. This is a single-center retrospective cohort study. Data collection was performed for all the consecutive stage Ib-IV CC women treated with cisplatin-based CRT from 2012 to 2016, and with known HIV status. Sixty-one patients were included, 6 were HIV+. HIV+ patients had a higher risk of neutropenia at any cycle during cisplatin CRT [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 7.3, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.02–52.3; P = .05]. Despite the absolute differences, mean neutrophil count was nonsignificantly lower in HIV+ women, both at baseline [4455/μL (interquartile range, IQR: 1830–6689) vs 6340 (IQR: 1720–18,970) for HIV−, P = .98] and at the end of treatment [1752/μL (IQR: 1100–2930) vs 3147/μL (IQR: 920–18,390) in HIV−; P = .06]. Moreover, when considering the effect of time, CRT seems to induce a consistent drop of neutrophils in both groups (P = .229). No febrile neutropenia events occurred. In HIV+ women, there were more CT cycle delays (P = .013), patients were more prone to use granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF; HIV+ 40.0% vs HIV− 4.0%; P = .04) and less likely to complete at least 5 cycles of cisplatin (P = .02). All patients received adequate dose of pelvic RT, regardless of HIV status. HIV+ patients have a significantly increased risk of neutropenia during CRT treatment for CC and are less likely to complete chemotherapy with cisplatin.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Exploring changes in children’s well-being due to COVID-19 restrictions: the Italian EpaS-ISS study

BackgroundWhile existing research has explored changes in health behaviours among adults and adolescents due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the impact of quarantine on young children's well-being is still less clear. Moreover, most of the published studies were carried out on small and non-representative samples. The aim of the EpaS-ISS study was to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the habits and behaviours of a representative sample of school children aged mainly 8-9 years and their families living in Italy, exploring the changes in children's well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the immediately preceding time period.MethodsData were collected using a web questionnaire. The target population was parents of children attending third-grade primary schools and living in Italy. A cluster sample design was adopted. A Well-Being Score (WBS) was calculated by summing the scores from 10 items concerning the children's well-being. Associations between WBS and socio-demographic variables and other variables were analysed.ResultsA total of 4863 families participated. The children's WBS decreased during COVID-19 (median value from 31 to 25; p = 0.000). The most statistically significant variables related to a worsening children's WBS were: time of school closure, female gender, living in a house with only a small and unliveable outdoor area, high parents' educational level and worsening financial situation.ConclusionsAccording to parents ' perception, changes in daily routine during COVID-19 negatively affected children's well-being. This study has identified some personal and contextual variables associated with the worsening of children's WBS, which should be considered in case of similar events
