Partial-measurement back-action and non-classical weak values in a superconducting circuit
We realize indirect partial measurement of a transmon qubit in circuit
quantum electrodynamics by interaction with an ancilla qubit and projective
ancilla measurement with a dedicated readout resonator. Accurate control of the
interaction and ancilla measurement basis allows tailoring the measurement
strength and operator. The tradeoff between measurement strength and qubit
back-action is characterized through the distortion of a qubit Rabi oscillation
imposed by ancilla measurement in different bases. Combining partial and
projective qubit measurements, we provide the solid-state demonstration of the
correspondence between a non-classical weak value and the violation of a

Sea state bias in altimeter sea level estimates determined by combining wave model and satellite data
This study documents a method for increasing the precision of satellite-derived sea level measurements. Results are achieved using an enhanced three-dimensional (3-D) sea state bias (SSB) correction model derived from both Jason-1 altimeter ocean observations (i.e., sea state and wind) and estimates of mean wave period from a numerical ocean wave model, NOAA’s WAVEWATCH III. A multiyear evaluation of Jason-1 data indicates sea surface height variance reduction of 1.26 (±0.2) cm2 in comparison to the commonly applied two-parameter SSB model. The improvement is similar for two separate variance reduction metrics and for separate annual data sets spanning 2002–2004. Spatial evaluation of improvement shows skill increase at all latitudes. Results indicate the new model can reduce the total Jason-1 and Jason-2 altimeter range error budgets by 7.5%. In addition to the 2-D (two-dimensional) and 3-D model differences in correcting the range for wavefield variability, mean model regional differences also occur across the globe and indicate a possible 1–2 cm gradient across ocean basins linked to the zonal variation in wave period (short fetch and period in the west, swells and long period in the east). Overall success of this model provides first evidence that operational wave modeling can support improved ocean altimetry. Future efforts will attempt to work within the limits of wave modeling capabilities to maximize their benefit to Jason-1 and Jason-2 SSB correction methods
Variations saisonnières des formes de phosphores dans une station de traitement des eaux usées par lagunage, sous climat aride de Marrakech (Maroc)
L'objectif de ce travail est d'étudier dans un premier temps la dynamique du phosphore dans un système de traitement d 'eaux usées par lagunage facultatif, en relation avec les compartiments biologiques: phytoplancton, zooplancton et bactéries, dans un deuxième temps, d'évaluer, sous les conditions du climat aride, les performances épuratoires de ce système en ce qui concerne les formes du phosphore. Un intérêt particulier est porté au phénomène du relargage du phosphore par les sédiments. Les résultats montrent qu'il y a une évolution saisonnière et cyclique du phosphore dans les bassins de lagunage, en étroite corrélation avec le phytoplancton et le zooplancton. Le phytoplancton représente la part importante des formes organiques du phosphore particulaire. Les meilleures performances d'élimination du phosphore sont notées au printemps (77% pour les PO4 et 64 % pour le phosphore total). La période la moins performante est la période automne-hiver où les rendements moyens ne dépassent pas 38%. Le phosphore éliminé est stocké dans les sédiments. En période estivale, des phénomènes de relargage du phosphore à partir des sédiments ont été mis en évidence, favorisés par une zonation verticale des eaux à cette période. Des essais aulaboratoire ont montré la grande aptitude des sédiments de la station de lagunage étudiée à relarguer le phosphore, avec intervention de l'activité biologique du sédiment.Assimilation, sedimentation and release are the principal mechanisms controlling the behavior of phosphorus in aquatic ecosystems. There are numerous investigations of the phosphorus cycle in lakes and rivers in relation to the eutrophication process. There are, however, few studies about phosphorus cycling in waste stabilization ponds and most of these have discussed phosphorus removal. The aims of this paper were: 1) to study phosphorus dynamics in relation to the biomass compartment (zooplancton, phytoplancton and bacteria); and 2) to evaluate the phosphorus removal efficiency of the treatment plant under arid climatic conditions. Of particular interest was the remobilization of phosphorus from the pond sediment, both under laboratory conditions and in the field. The experimental installation consisted of two ponds receiving domestic wastewater (mean flow=120.4+5.8 m3.day-1 and specific organic load=56 kgBOD.ha-1. day-1; pond area=0.5 ha and depth=1.5 m). Samples were taken twice monthly from the surface, B1(S) and B2(S), and from the 1.5 m layers, B1(F) and B2(F). Composite (24 h) samples were taken from the inflow and the outflowof the plant to determine the removal efficiencies. In each sample, soluble reactive phosphorus (PO4), total phosphorus (PT) and total soluble phosphorus (PTD) were determined. Particulate phosphorus (PTP) was calculated as (PT-PTD) and soluble organic phosphorus (POD) as (PTD-PO4). Phosphorus release was measured in a plexiglas flask containing sediment (collected by corer from the pond bottom) overlaid with distilled water. Over 15 days, daily measurements were made of PO4 and total phosphorus. Sediment dry weight (%), volatile matter, organic carbon (%) and total phosphorus were measured before and after each test. Phosphorus contents of the phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacteria were estimated using the methods of BOUGIS (1974).The results show that cyclical and seasonal variations of phosphorus content were closely correlated with variations in the biological components. Significant correlation coefficients were noted between chlorophyll-a and particulate organic phosphorus. Organic phosphorus in algal cells was the more important form of particulate organic phosphorus. Under the arid climate, the waste stabilization ponds were more efficient at phosphate removal during the spring-summer period (77% of PO4 and 64% of total phosphorus in spring). The first pond may play the major role in phosphate removal. Phosphorus is only eliminated from stabilization ponds through accumulation in the sediment. However, part of the phosphorus which accumulates in pond sediments remains potentially mobile. During the summer period, phosphorus release from the sediment, observed in situ, was favored by stratification of the overlying water. The same phenomenon was noted during the autumn, particularly the release of POD. Laboratory studies have shown that phosphorus release may amount to 55 mg P m-2d-1. Biological activity may play a significant role in this mobilization
MRI measures of middle cerebral artery diameter in conscious humans during simulated orthostasis.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The relationship between middle cerebral artery (MCA) flow velocity (CFV) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) is uncertain because of unknown vessel diameter response to physiological stimuli. The purpose of this study was to directly examine the effect of a simulated orthostatic stress (lower body negative pressure [LBNP]) as well as increased or decreased end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure (P(ET)CO(2)) on MCA diameter and CFV.
METHODS: Twelve subjects participated in a CO(2) manipulation protocol and/or an LBNP protocol. In the CO(2) manipulation protocol, subjects breathed room air (normocapnia) or 6% inspired CO(2) (hypercapnia), or they hyperventilated to approximately 25 mm Hg P(ET)CO(2) (hypocapnia). In the LBNP protocol, subjects experienced 10 minutes each of -20 and -40 mm Hg lower body suction. CFV and diameter of the MCA were measured by transcranial Doppler and MRI, respectively, during the experimental protocols.
RESULTS: Compared with normocapnia, hypercapnia produced increases in both P(ET)CO(2) (from 36+/-3 to 40+/-4 mm Hg, P
CONCLUSIONS: Under the conditions of this study, changes in MCA diameter were not detected. Therefore, we conclude that relative changes in CFV were representative of changes in CBF during the physiological stimuli of moderate LBNP or changes in P(ET)CO(2)
Effect of a 6-month brisk walking program on walking endurance in sedentary and physically deconditioned women aged 60 or older: A randomized trial
International audienceBACKGROUND:Walking endurance is a predictor of healthy ageing.OBJECTIVE:To examine if a 6-month brisk walking program can increase walking endurance in sedentary and physically deconditioned older women.TRIAL DESIGN:Randomized controlled trial.SETTING:Women recruited from public meetings aimed at promoting physical activity in women aged 60 or older.SUBJECTS:121 women aged 65.7 ± 4.3 years, with sedentary lifestyle (Physical Activity Questionnaire for the Elderly score 46%) were those with baseline lowest values of 6MWD (p=0.001) and highest values of body mass index (BMI) (p<0.01).CONCLUSION:Present results support recommendation that brisk walking programs should be encouraged to improve walking endurance in physically deconditioned women aged 60 or older, especially in those with high BMI
Neonatal brain: Regional variability of in vivo MR imaging relaxation rates at 3.0 T-initial experience
PURPOSE: To retrospectively investigate regional in vivo magnetic resonance,(MR). imaging transverse and longitudinal relaxation rates at 3.0 T in neonatal brain, the p relationship between these rates, and their potential use for gray matter (G),versus-M white matter (WM) tissue discrimination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: I Informed parental consent for performance of imaging procedures was obtained in each infant. Informed consent for retrospective image analysis was not required; ethics approval was obtained from institutional review board. At 3.0 T, R1 and R2 were measured in brain regions (frontal WM, posterior WM, periventricular WM, frontal GM, posterior GM, basal ganglia, and thalamus) in 13 infants with suspected neurologic abnormality (two term, 11 preterm). Maps of R1 and R2 were acquired with T1 by multiple readout pulses and segmented spin-echo echo-planar imaging sequences, respectively. Accuracy of R1 and R2 map acquisition methods was tested in phantoms by comparing them with inversion-recovery and spin-echo sequences, respectively. Statistical analysis included linear regression analysis to determine relationship between R1 and R2 and Wilcoxon signed rank test to investigate the potential. for discrimination between GM and WM. RESULTS: In phantoms, R1 values measured with T1 by multiple readout pulses sequence were 3%-8% lower than those measured with inversion recovery sequence, and R2 values measured with segmented echo-planar sequence were 1%-8% lower than those measured with spin-echo sequence. A strong correlation of 0.944 (P \u3c.001) between R1 and R2 in neonatal brain was observed. For R2, relative differences between GM and WM were larger than were those for R1 (z = -2.366, P \u3c.05). For frontal GM and frontal WM, (R2(GM) - R2(WM))/R2(WM) yielded 0.8 +/- 0.2 (mean +/- standard deviation) and (R1(GM) - R1(WM))/R1(WM) yielded 0.3 +/- 0.09. CONCLUSION: Results at 3.0 T indicate that R1 decreases with increasing field strength, while R2 values are similar to those reported at lower field strengths. For neonates, R2 image contrast may be more advantageous than R1 image contrast for differentiation between GM and WM. (C) RSNA, 2005
Proton and Helium Spectra from the CREAM-III Flight
Primary cosmic-ray elemental spectra have been measured with the
balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment since 2004. The
third CREAM payload (CREAM-III) flew for 29 days during the 2007-2008 Antarctic
season. Energies of incident particles above 1 TeV are measured with a
calorimeter. Individual elements are clearly separated with a charge resolution
of ~0.12 e (in charge units) and ~0.14 e for protons and helium nuclei,
respectively, using two layers of silicon charge detectors. The measured proton
and helium energy spectra at the top of the atmosphere are harder than other
existing measurements at a few tens of GeV. The relative abundance of protons
to helium nuclei is 9.53+-0.03 for the range of 1 TeV/n to 63 TeV/n. The ratio
is considerably smaller than other measurements at a few tens of GeV/n. The
spectra become softer above ~20 TeV. However, our statistical uncertainties are
large at these energies and more data are needed
Social Interactions vs Revisions, What is important for Promotion in Wikipedia?
In epistemic community, people are said to be selected on their knowledge
contribution to the project (articles, codes, etc.) However, the socialization
process is an important factor for inclusion, sustainability as a contributor,
and promotion. Finally, what does matter to be promoted? being a good
contributor? being a good animator? knowing the boss? We explore this question
looking at the process of election for administrator in the English Wikipedia
community. We modeled the candidates according to their revisions and/or social
attributes. These attributes are used to construct a predictive model of
promotion success, based on the candidates's past behavior, computed thanks to
a random forest algorithm.
Our model combining knowledge contribution variables and social networking
variables successfully explain 78% of the results which is better than the
former models. It also helps to refine the criterion for election. If the
number of knowledge contributions is the most important element, social
interactions come close second to explain the election. But being connected
with the future peers (the admins) can make the difference between success and
failure, making this epistemic community a very social community too
Effect of Acute Exposure to Hypergravity (Gx vs. Gz) on Dynamic Cerebral Autoregulation
We examined the effects of 30 min of exposure to either +3G(sub x) or +3G(sub z) centrifugation on cerebrovascular responses to 800 head-up tilt (HUT) in 14 healthy individuals. Both before and after +3G(sub x) or +3G(sub z) centrifugation, eye-level blood pressure (BP(sub eye)), end tidal CO2 (P(sub ET)CO2), mean cerebral flow velocity (CFV) in the middle cerebral artery (trans cranial Doppler ultrasound), cerebral vascular resistance (CVR) and dynamic cerebral autoregulatory gain (GAIN) were measured with subjects in the supine position and during subsequent 800 HUT for 30 min. Mean BP(sub eye) decreased with HUT in both the G(sub x) (n= 7) and G(sub z) (n=7) groups (P less than 0.00l), with the decrease being greater after centrifugation only in the G(sub z) group (P less than 0.05). P(sub ET)CO2 also decreased with HUT in both groups (P less than 0.0l), but the absolute level of decrease was unaffected by centrifugation. CFV decreased during HUT more significantly after than before centrifugation in both groups (P less than 0.02). However, these greater decreases were not associated with greater increases in CVR. In the supine position after compared to before centrifugation, GAIN increased in both groups (P less than 0.05, suggesting an autoregulatory deficit), with the change being correlated to a measure of otolith function (the linear vestibulo-ocular reflex) in the G(sub x) group (R=0.76, P less than 0.05) but not in the G(sub z) group (R=0.24, P=0.60). However, GAIN was subsequently restored to pre-centrifugation levels during post-centrifugation HUT (i.e., as BP(sub eye) decreased), suggesting that both types of centrifugation resulted in a leftward shift of the cerebral autoregulation curve. We speculate that this leftward shift may have been due to vestibular activation (especially during +G(sub x)) or potentially to an adaptation to reduced cerebral perfusion pressure during +G(sub z)
Bioaccesibilidad de minerales mayoritarios y oligoelementos en distintas variedades de arroz cocido en Argentina
The objective of this work was to evaluate the total and bioaccessible concentration of elemental nutrients in rice varieties, from the provinces of Corrientes and Entre Ríos. The samples of cooked white rice, fine long and fortuna or double carolina varieties, were processed by standardized methods, like moisture, total proteins by Kjeldhal, fiber by a gravimetric-enzymatic method. The macroelements calcium and magnesium were evaluated by complexometry, phosphorus by UV-visible spectrophotometry, and the microelements iron, copper and zinc were performed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The bioaccessible fraction was determined by an in vitro dialysis method, using an enzyme complex and successive incubations reproducing the digestion process under physiological conditions. The results of total calcium ranged between 50 mg/100g of the double carolina variety from Corrientes and 87 mg/100g of the fine long from the same province, the dialyzable calcium was between 15 and 16%, the total phosphorus ranged between 39.4 mg/100g in fine long and 56.2 mg/100g in double carolina, both from Entre Ríos, and the dialysable fraction varied between 15 and 20%, the total magnesium content fluctuated between 30.0 mg/100g and 51.0 mg/100g and the dialyzable between 22 and 31%. Regarding iron, it had total concentrations of 6 mg/kg in fine long rice, with 60% of dialyzable fraction and 12 mg/kg in double caroline, but with 35% of dialyzability. Total copper yielded values between 3.45 mg/kg and 5.70 mg/kg with 6 to 30% dialysed fraction. The total zinc content varied between 10.21 mg/kg and 11.48 mg/kg, with a low bioaccessible fraction of 3%. It is concluded that the total and bioaccessible contents of these nutrients is initial information to promove a fortification program in rice, which is the most important crop in the region.El trabajo se realizó con el objetivo de dilucidar la concentración total y bioaccesible de nutrientes elementales en variedades de arroz de las provincias de Corrientes y Entre Ríos. Las muestras de arroz blanco cocido, del tipo largo fino y fortuna o doble carolina, se procesaron por métodos estandarizados, determinándose humedad, proteínas totales por Kjeldhal y fibra por método gravimétrico-enzimático. Los macrominerales calcio y magnesio se evaluaron por complexometría, el fósforo por espectrofotometría UV-visible, y los microelementos hierro, cobre y cinc por espectrofotometría de absorción atómica. La fracción bioaccesible se determinó por el método de diálisis in vitro, utilizando un complejo enzimático y sucesivas incubaciones reproduciendo el proceso de digestión en condiciones fisiológicas. Los resultados de calcio total oscilaron entre 50 mg/100 g de la variedad doble carolina de Corrientes y 87 mg/100 g del largo fino de la misma provincia, el calcio dializable fue entre un 15 y 16%, el fósforo total osciló entre 39,4 mg/100 g en largo fino y 56,2 mg/100 g en doble carolina, ambos entrerrianos y la fracción dializable varió entre 15 y 20%, el contenido de magnesio total fluctuó entre 30,0 mg/100 g y 51,0 mg/100 g y el dializable entre 22 y 31 %. Con respecto al hierro, tuvo concentraciones totales de 6 mg/kg en largo fino con un 60% de dializable y 12 mg/kg en doble carolina, pero con 35% de dializabilidad.
