    Botanical memory: five centuries of floristic changes revealed by a Renaissance herbarium (Ulisse Aldrovandi, 1551-1586)

    We analysed the spatially explicit floristic information available in the herbarium of Ulisse Aldrovandi (1551-1586) to track floristic changes in the surroundings of Bologna across five centuries. Aldrovandi's data were compared with the Flora della Provincia di Bologna by Girolamo Cocconi (1883) and the Floristic Database of Emilia-Romagna (1965-2021). We explored potential variations in native range and life forms composition, and habitat affinity of the species in the three floras, also contrasting between native and alien species. Native species, mainly in terms of variations of hydro-hygrophytes, chamaephytes and therophytes, provide clear signals of human disturbance and habitat loss. Signals of climate change are provided by the high-mountain species, that were comparably rare between Aldrovandi and current flora and more represented in Cocconi, probably reflecting the effect of the Little Ice Age. Our findings also indicate the increasing importance of alien species from the Renaissance onwards. In this perspective, Aldrovandi's herbarium preserves the memory of the first signs of a radical transformation of the European flora and habitats. Finally, the study warns about the risk of dismissing herbaria and herbarium specimens collection, which would cause irreparable lacunas in our botanical memory, hindering our ability to predict biodiversity trajectories

    La vegetazione dell’Emilia-Romagna

    Il presente lavoro costituisce una sintesi, aggiornata al 2020, delle conoscenze sulla vegetazione dell'Emilia-Romagna. Le fonti utilizzate sono rappresentate esclusivamente da dati di letteratura (articoli, volumi, in un caso una Tesi di Dottorato) riguardanti il territorio citato; in nessun caso vi sono contenuti dati originali. Vengono trattati i syntaxa di livello basale (associazioni, subassociazioni e aggruppamenti) che sono inquadrati in uno schema sintassonomico comprendente classi, ordini e alleanze. Per ogni classe di vegetazione il testo è diviso in una parte descrittiva, con schema sintassonomico e cenni di sinecologia, ed in una sezione contenente le tabelle relative a quella particolare classe. Complessivamente sono trattate 50 classi di vegetazione comprendenti 3258 rilievi distribuiti in 454 tabelle fitosociologiche

    AMS-VegBank: a new database of vegetation plots for the Italian territory

    The importance of collection, storage and exchange of georeferenced vegetation plot-based data has significantly grown in the recent decades, because of the new potentialities offered by ecoinformatics. In this article we introduce the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna vegetation database (AMS-VegBank; GIVD code EU-IT-021) compiling 17,505 georeferenced vegetation-plot observations within a time span of 90 years. This database includes 337,799 occurrence data of vascular plant species, belonging to many different habitat types. The historical relevance of the presented database is highlighted by the presence of some of the most ancient vegetation-plot observations in Europe (years 1930–1938). The geographic coverage of the database is mostly for Italian territory but it includes also data from other countries. The thematic focuses represented in the database are various, such as small Mediterranean islands, the Dolomite Mountains and the Italian National Parks. The large amount of historical plots available for the country not previously included in existing databases, combined with the constant action to improve the georeferencing of existing data and the addition of new data, highlight the uniqueness of this database. AMS-VegBank represents thus an important tool for studying plant biodiversity within the context of continental and global vegetation plot databases

    The Calcineurin Variant CnAβ1 Controls Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation by Directing mTORC2 Membrane Localization and Activation

    Embryonic stem cells (ESC) have the potential to generate all the cell lineages that form the body. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ESC differentiation and especially the role of alternative splicing in this process remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the alternative splicing regulator MBNL1 promotes generation of the atypical calcineurin Aβ variant CnAβ1 in mouse ESCs (mESC). CnAβ1 has a unique C-terminal domain that drives its localization mainly to the Golgi apparatus by interacting with Cog8. CnAβ1 regulates the intracellular localization and activation of the mTORC2 complex. CnAβ1 knockdown results in delocalization of mTORC2 from the membrane to the cytoplasm, inactivation of the AKT/GSK3β/β-catenin signaling pathway, and defective mesoderm specification.     Growth of TiO2 nanotube arrays with simultaneous Au nanoparticles impregnation: photocatalysts for hydrogen production

    Um novo método para a fabricação de nanotubos (NTs) de TiO2 organizados e impregnados com nanopartículas (NPs) de ouro foi desenvolvido, e as propriedades estruturais, morfológicas e ópticas dos NTs obtidos foram investigadas. Os arranjos de NTs de TiO2 foram crescidos pela oxidação anódica de Ti metálico utilizando soluções eletrolíticas contendo íons fluoreto e NPs de Au. As estruturas resultantes foram caracterizadas por espectrometria de retroespalhamento Rutherford (RBS), difratometria de raios X com incidência rasante (GIXRD), microscopias eletrônicas de transmissão (TEM) e de varredura (SEM) e espectroscopia UV-Vis. Tanto os arranjos de NTs sem Au quanto os impregnados com Au mostraram atividade fotocatalítica boa e estável na geração de hidrogênio a partir de misturas água/metanol. Os nanotubos de TiO2 contendo Au foram mais ativos na fotogeração de hidrogênio do que os NTs de TiO2 sem Au.A novel method for the fabrication of TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) impregnated with gold nanoparticles (NPs) is reported. TiO2 NT arrays were grown by anodic oxidation of Ti metal using fluoride electrolytes containing Au NPs. Resulting structures were characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), grazing incidence X-ray diffractometry (GIXRD), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Au-free and Au-impregnated TiO2 NT arrays showed good and stable photocatalytic activity for hydrogen generation from water/methanol solutions. Au-containing TiO2 NTs presented higher hydrogen photogeneration activity than Au-free TiO2 NTs
