Rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most common injuries, accounting for almost 50% of the total knee ligament injuries. Over the years, several practical guides and protocols have been created for it treatment. However, although several studies confirm the benefits of early rehabilitation, there is no consensus on what active exercises should be performed in early stages. Therefore, in this study a systematic review has been carried out with the objective of analyzing randomized clinical trials that have applied exercises in the early rehabilitation of an ACL reconstruction. This study aims to determine if active exercise in the post-surgical acute phase reports benefits and shortens the treatment time. The results showed significant differences in the different variables (strength, pain, range of motion, ligament laxity and circumference of the lower limb) compared to the initial assessment of the respective protocols. Therefore, active exercise seems to be effective for the recovery in early postsurgical phases, highlighting the work of strengthening quadriceps in the early phase for the gain of range of motion and decrease of symptomatology. There are currently not enough studies done during the first two weeks after surgery to confirm the benefits of active exercise.

COVID-19 Data Analysis with a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm for Causal Association Rule Mining

Association rule mining plays a crucial role in the medical area in discovering interesting relationships among the attributes of a data set. Traditional association rule mining algorithms such as Apriori, FP growth, or Eclat require considerable computational resources and generate large volumes of rules. Moreover, these techniques depend on user-defined thresholds which can inadvertently cause the algorithm to omit some interesting rules. In order to solve such challenges, we propose an evolutionary multi-objective algorithm based on NSGA-II to guide the mining process in a data set composed of 15.5 million records with official data describing the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico. We tested different scenarios optimizing classical and causal estimation measures in four waves, defined as the periods of time where the number of people with COVID-19 increased. The proposed contributions generate, recombine, and evaluate patterns, focusing on recovering promising high-quality rules with actionable cause–effect relationships among the attributes to identify which groups are more susceptible to disease or what combinations of conditions are necessary to receive certain types of medical care

A pimenta-longa (Piper hispidinervum C. DC.) Long pepper (Piper hispidinervum C. DC.) is a shrub of the Piperaceae family, native of the Amazonian region, with special interest of cosmetics and bio-insecticide industries due to its high concentration of safrol, an essential oil extracted from the leaves and stems. This work aimed to evaluate the physical and nutritional characteristics of the encapsulation matrix during the production of synthetic seeds of long pepper. Germinated long pepper seeds were used as vegetative material for encapsulation. For both experiments, the influence of capsule composition (water or MS) and consistency (sodium alginate at 1% or 2%), complexation time in CaCl2 (10, 20 and 30 minutes) and opening of the capsules were evaluated. After encapsulation, the materials were transferred to flasks with MS medium and maintained in a growth room, where the germination and growth rates of the encapsulated plantlets were evaluated every two weeks. We verified that the use of an artificial endosperm composed by 1% of sodium alginate in MS medium promoted the best results for the conversion and further growth of plants originated from synthetic seeds after 30 days of culture in solid MS medium, independently of the complexation time used
